not bad at all for not selling around the holidays

Like I said in the XBO vs Switch article.

A holiday launch means NOTHING, because a console manufacturer is limited by the amount of consoles they can produce at a given time.

You can't cheer for a holiday launch being better at sales, when there's a cap to the amount of product avilable like there is with every console, and why the PS4 / XBO didn't launch worldwide until months later (almost a year later for XBO which only gave them a modest boost).

It doesn't matter if there are 100 million people looking for presents if you only have 2 million consoles that can be produced during that time frame. Stop using the holiday as an excuse, the holiday season doesn't matter at launch, because consoles generally sell out regardless. What matter is the holiday season post launch, which the Switch will benefit from since it'll be 8 - 9 months after launch for them, while XBO and PS4 have to wait 12 months to see the true benefits of the holiday season.

That being said good job Nintendo with the Switch.

Demand is certainly higher during the holidays. The fact that Switch is in such high demand 4 months after launch is impressive. I don't think Nintendo expected this demand so early in the year. The supply side is still horrible though which goes to your point. You can sell as much as you can produce.

ABizzel13262d ago

Demand is higher during the holidays for the general public, but gamers are buying a new console at launch regardless of when it releases, and again sales are limited by production.

And 3 - 4 months after the PS4 and XBO launched they were in January and February two of the worst sales months of the year. But yeah my whole point is you can only sale as much as you can make, and Nintendo has had a great start, but has run into a wall for supply which is why PS4 had a staggered launch so they could hit their main regions strong the first few months. XBO did the same, but their console simply slowed down in sales.

The reality is Switch will be benefitting from its first holiday season while PS4 and XBO didn't benefit until a full 12 months later.

Xbox One launched at same time as PS4. What console launch at same time with Switch?

FallenAngel19843262d ago

And PS4 wasn't even in Japan at this point

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3262d ago

Japan really didn't make a difference though.90% of PS4 sales are in the west.

FallenAngel19843262d ago

It still contributed to PS4's total sales while NS was was widely available worldwide at the time

Eltortugagames3262d ago

Switch is widely available anywhere still. PS4 was sold out for a long time too its really only how many they made in both instances

goken3262d ago

i think slight advantage to ps4. switch not launch during holiday season, while ps4 not launched in Japan...
really Happy that nintendo is doing well :)

ABizzel13262d ago

Launching in the holiday season doesn't matter if you can only produce 2m consoles to begin with.

Inzo3262d ago

The PS4 is the King, of that there is no doubt, that being said, the Switch is putting up a good fight. I reckon over Xmas time the PS4 and the Switch will be slugging it out for top honors in that time period with Xbox bringing up the rear.
