Is the Mass Effect Series Dead?

Mass Effect should be too big to fail. What does EA's reaction mean for AAA game development?

"Too big to fail"?

What the actual f***!?

EA put B-team effort in a AAA touted product and somehow its "too big to fail"?

And I'm talking about ME3. Andromeda got C-team treatment with some kind of warped perception that fan loyalty was going to carry it.

Too big to f***ing fail - AAAGGGHHHHH!

(Really can't handle that much stupidity in the morning. Or ever.)

Retard3232d ago

Yeah, it's sad and spot on "C- treatment". After release they decided pandering to certain people was more important than a quality product. After killing the same enemy recolored 4 difficerent ways, I tossed this gargantuan garbage out of my digital library. It's officially my last ME pre- order or purchase.

VenomUK3231d ago

I hope it isn't dead.
I love the original trilogy and. The problem with ME: Andromeda is this game was likely a well-intentioned cash grab. What makes me say this? It is because the story does not continue after the events of ME3 - it effectively happened during the earlier events of the trilogy meaning that its story has no consequence on what happened to Shepard. Well why wouldn't Bioware continue the story? Because it was made by their B-team made up substantially of freelancers. Bioware wanted to make another game but they didn't have faith in them continuing the story.

My hope is that the Bioware A-Team when they have completed Anthem then return to the Mass Effect universe to continue the story of Shepards fight against the Reapers.

Stogz3232d ago

What bothers me most is that they obviously half assed the game and yet fans of the series will have to suffer now because it didn't sell well (rightfully so) and now we may not get another for many years. Hope whenever they do make another they don't half ass it again.
My bet is EA sees the $ destiny and division made so they pulled everything into Anthem.

MrCrabPuss3232d ago

The bigger they are, the harder they fail....no wait...

-Foxtrot3233d ago

They should reboot it next gen. Seriously brand new, start from scratch including the lore, keep the things which work and remove the things which didn't. They can keep things like N7, Mass Relays, the Citadel etc but story wise it should be a blank slate.

Make it more like Mass Effect and make it more RPG like along with heavy strategic elements...oh and once again in my old fashion, cut the god damn thermal clips, this shouldn't be a run and gun shooter.

Godmars2903233d ago

It stopped being an RPG, because a shooter-in-RPG-clothing, with ME2. They then went one worse by creating too grand a scale to manage.

Movefasta19933232d ago (Edited 3232d ago )

Do you know what a role playing game is right?there is a fuck load of role playing in mass effect 2 , seriously ...nvm

MadLad3232d ago

Mass Effect 2 most definitely was a role-playing game. I'd say the best in the series by a decent margin. Sure, they removed some of the more old-school RPG elements, such as the gunplay, but the character progression was still there. The character building was there. The moral choices were there. The branching story paths were there.
Mass Effect 1 felt like a KOTOR re-imagining, mixed with Deus Ex. It was great. Admittedly, being the old-school RPG enthusiast that I am, I was a little annoyed with the more shooter-esque feel of the second game originally. When the original Mass Effect released, I enjoyed the fact that they handled gunplay in a more stat based way that they did.
I felt that removing that system took away from how 'hardcore' the title was. After a little time, however, I felt it was better for the series as a whole. By today's standards, the original Mass Effect feels very clunky. I can't say the same for 2 (or even 3)/ And the other elements of the game I feel surpassed the original in a number of ways.

3 wasn't a worthy conclusion to the series proper, however.
And I still haven't bothered with the recent release. Though what I have played seems decent enough, I guess.

Godmars2903232d ago

ME2 wasn't so much about story but rather character presentation. The main story had nothing to do with the overall campaign, the Reapers don't actually come into play until the DLC, all you do is build bounds with with your teammates.

rainslacker3232d ago

Or just release a better sequel. Do we really need to go back through all that lore again, just in a different way.

The universe is a big place, and they left it at a place that it's easy enough to create a good story if they actually choose to do so.

trouble_bubble3233d ago

Some things are cyclical. Space, sci fi aliens and all that, aren't all that in gaming at the moment.

COD's getting away from the moon jumping and space sets, titanfall 2 came and went, no man's sky got roasted, dead space is dead, Prey bombed, mass effect flopped, halo and gears are burnt out shells of their former selves, the guardians of the galaxy game is invisible. The aliens lost.

SW battlefront has the 40 yr old star wars license to help sell it but even Disney's starting to milk Star Wars to death on a yearly basis. Destiny 2 looks like more of the same. It'll sell because dude bros, but the space race in and of itself is over. For now.

Yui_Suzumiya3232d ago

Sorry but Prey didn't bomb at all. Space is tops in gaming right now!

MorpheusX3232d ago

@SolidGear3

The NEW Prey, did bomb.

MadLad3232d ago

Prey didn't bomb.

It definitely did well enough that, if Bethesda wanted, they should feel safe in green-lighting a sequel.
Did it do as well as they wanted? Nah.
Then again, most games don't.
And there's only a handful of situations where a game largely surpassed expectations.

trouble_bubble3232d ago (Edited 3232d ago )

Prey estimates on vgchartz for XB1 are 110,000. For a AAA from Bethesda years in the making, that's close enough to stink bomb country that I can smell the sulfur. 270,000 on PS4. Better, but for a multiplat probably not enough to justify dlc let alone a sequel.

Space isn't tops in gaming right now. Look at the article you clicked on. "Is Mass Effect dead"?

The Star Trek mmo just launched on console this year and is equally meh. No one cares. Only the PC version has enough reviews to even get a metacritic average and it's only 66%. They're in a slump right now. Even the indies. ADR1FT has a 56% metacritic average on PS4. Set phasers to fail!

Cyclical, like I said. Give it time.

freshslicepizza3232d ago

I would like them to carry on the franchise one way or another. I love space games and the IP is too rich to simply ignore. So many possibilities but the online should not be the focus.

TheOttomatic913232d ago

Due to Andromeda's financial and critical failure yes unfortunately, I mean that's the real reason why there will be no DLC.

A part of me is sad but then the other part is quickly reminded about how awful Andromeda was. If Bioware wants to make another Mass Effect game they should wait a number of years and reboot the series.

StuffAndThings3232d ago (Edited 3232d ago )

Or since Andromeda is so far into the future & before Mass Effect 3 just act like Andromeda never happens & return to Shepard & crew. Or the first contact wars

UltimateOne883232d ago

This is exactly what I was thinking. Go back to the Sheppard timeline and tell a new story with the original crew.

For All Its Flaws, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Approach to Romance is Something ME4 Can Learn From

While Mass Effect: Andromeda was let in several key areas, one of its approaches to romances is something Mass Effect 4 should consider revisiting.

I hope Mass Effect 4 ignores the inferior prequels and instead closely follows the far superior Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition.

anast479d ago (Edited 479d ago )

Mass Effect 4 should just make Mass Effect 1 but better with current tech. Fans would be happy. As far as romance, they should take notes from the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Ristul479d ago

Later Bioware games have to little build up. You can have a normal conversation and all of a sudden BAM! The character you talk to becomes super flirty.

TricksterArrow478d ago

Reminds me of Baldur’s Gate. I wanted to practice some magic and Gale made it super weird. Not even gonna mention Astarion.

gold_drake479d ago (Edited 479d ago )

iii dunno about that.

the only really great and funny dating partner, is that outlaw guy anyways haha he was funny as hell.

other than that, i found every character to be very annoying.

ZeekQuattro478d ago

Shout out to Keri the Asari reporter. Current relationship status be damned as she's game either way. Anything for a good story. 🤣

Mass Effect Companion Tier Ranking

One of the best things about the Mas Effect series is the companions you meet along the way. So here is a tier list of all the companions from Mass Effect!

IAMRealHooman520d ago

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast520d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine520d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast520d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman520d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast520d ago

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

IAMRealHooman519d ago

it's like bitch but your shirt back on, your not blue or spikey get away from me

BioWare Thinks Mass Effect Andromeda Was Better Game Than Reception Suggested

BioWare thinks Mass Effect: Andromeda was a better game than what reception suggested; taught the studio not to shoehorn open-world without any meaningful content in it.

thorstein556d ago

I played it and it wasn't as bad as people said. Is it in the 8-10 range? No.

It's a 6-7, which means it's a solid game.

LordoftheCritics556d ago (Edited 556d ago )

Veilguard and Andromeda are of similar level to me.
6 to 6.5 ish

Though I think i enjoyed Andromeda's combat and sense of scale a little bit more.

XBManiac555d ago

Veilguard has better graphics.

neutralgamer1992555d ago

I agree with you It was a 6.5 type game. Gameplay was solid everything else was lacking. Playing at launch with all the issues was just absurd. EA could have let the developers keep patching and fix the game but they stopped just like they did with anthem. It’s crazy to think multi billion dollar publishers can’t afford to keeping patching their games get medium size developers can support the game for years

But when you have android wilson running the company what else can we expect.

OtterX555d ago

Except 6-7 doesn't translate as solid. 6 means a bit flimsy, but still good/enjoyable if you can look past the flaws. 7, a little less flimsy, and enjoyable. 8-10 would be "solid".

But I get your point. I skipped the game entirely, so I don't have an opinion on it.

H9556d ago

I played this game back when I wanted to give every game I bought a fair chance and finish it, it was the reason why I stopped doing so, god the game was bad

TheNamelessOne555d ago

I actually enjoyed Andromeda. It wasn't a 10/10, by any means, but I played it years after the fact, after a lot of patching, and I had a good time with it.

anast555d ago

Same, I enjoyed it too. I might even replay it soon.

TheNamelessOne555d ago

Might do the same, honestly. Went through the trilogy a couple months back.

raWfodog555d ago

I liked it as well, and also played it for the first time over a year after it was released. The original trilogy was a better story overall IMO but I still enjoyed Andromeda.

lellkay555d ago

The game is so unbelivably bad, it's laughable.

pwnmaster3000555d ago (Edited 555d ago )

It really wasn’t. Well for me nd I’m a big fan of the series.
Was it mass effect standard? No
But overall I thought it was a decent game.
6-7/10.

Armaggedon555d ago

You might want to try playing a truly bad game. Go boot up two worlds or gollum to get the perspective you need

MatrixxGT555d ago

Wow, two worlds…red ringed my 360.

Armaggedon555d ago

Lol. Its one of the only games that I have experienced buyers remorse with. The only one I can think of is riders Republic.

matt139555d ago

So delusional, the title was an embarrassment to the original trilogy. it’s the equivalent of 2042 to the battlefield franchise.

thorstein555d ago

2042 had a redemption arc and what exists now is a pretty good FPS.
