The video has been removed from public viewing which gives us enough information to make a reasonable judgment regarding what might have happened:

1. EA made the video and gave it to Sony.
2. Sony uploaded the video without noticing the photo-shopped image because:
--a) they have a lot of videos to upload
--b) they expect that EA wouldn't hand them something half-assed requiring them to carefully watch it.
3. Sony removed the video after noticing the photo-shopped image.

Also, if this is what happened, then Sony is only at blame for assuming that EA would hand them a quality PlayStation trailer.

If this was the other way around ppl would storm down MS headquarters and take down the whole corporation. The only ones who are making a big deal out of this is Youtubers but the mainstream corporate journalists aren't.

Electronics Arts is responsible for editing the video since they are actually publishing Anthem not Sony. Sony only posted the video on their Youtube channel.

I've been doing the gaming journalism thing long enough to know how all of this works. Publishers put out B-Roll reels of their games for press and the like to use. These reels often come from one system, they rarely put out different versions for different consoles. So, believe it or not, you watch footage you think is from one console that was actually running on another more often than you might think. Whoever runs the PS Youtube channel likely didn't feel like trying to get EA to release new B-roll (or they simply couldn't talk them into it at all), so they tried to doctor the previously released footage. It's highly unlikely that they did so purposely to try to "use the best looking version" (which remains to be seen exactly how much "better" that version will be).

When I'd be at E3 interviewing developers, they often would hand us a piece of paper at the end with login credentials for that game's press site. Inside would be a collection of still images and pre-made
B-roll video clips. They often would tell us we cannot film the screen while they played the game, but we could use the b-roll they provided us with (in order to keep the quality high, off screen footage makes a great looking game look not so great). Many times they wouldn't even let us capture direct feed video, but would refer us to their b-roll instead. Again, this was a quality control thing. Can't have any bugs appear in b-roll they have pre-approved. They rarely cared if that b-roll was for the wrong console, so we often would end up showing Xbox 360 footage even though we might have been talking about the PS3 version of a game.

Microsoft uses PC footage ALL THE TIME just like Sony allows third-parties to do to market their consoles at E3.

Why is this case any different?

You guys have reason to be excited for xbox one x but meanwhile ps4 pro is still the one to beat. When your "beast" realeases you can also enjoy (and deservely so) this feeling of having the king console (though I dont see any major change on the sales and userbase difference. Just dont be so naive as to think it will be the "beast" forever. Technology evolves you know! ps5 will come, and so will the next xbox.

How do you know it's Sony and not just the footage they got from Activition?

Guy who did this probably works for Bioware. Sony isn't likely to make their own trailer for a game they aren't publishing.

Sony could have checked it out a bit better before uploading it though, but possibly people in marketing didn't care or didn't notice.

This is EA issue guys, Sony wouldn't modify a video from a third party without consent. So EA most likely provided the footage.

Funny how some folks turn all righteous and god fearing when they get the shit thrown back in their face.

People preach about Xbox One X getting the best version of a multi platform game and yet disregard the fact that the Xbox One S will also get the worse version of the same multi platform game. Considering Microsoft is expecting the Xbox One X to sell a fraction of the Xbox One consoles, I would say Xbox gamers are still getting the short end of the stick as more Xbox gamers will still be playing the worse version of every multi platform game for the foreseeable future. You can't brag about your sneakers being fresh if the rest of your wardrobe is trash. Just like you can't brag that 20% of the user base gets to play the best version when 80% gets to play the worse.

Anyway, on topic, both companies should have shown better judgement. Someone at EA should have just made footage of the game running on a PS4 Pro, and someone at Sony should have been more mindful of the content they are submitting. Mistakes like this just make any company involved look bad.

The article at hand is in regards to Sony using a Xbox OneX video. It's kept on topic. Sony fans brought in the Xbox, which isn't what this article is talking about. Did ms do the same thing? Yeah. Did they apologize and remove the video? Yeah. What more needs to be said about that? Did Sony use a Xbox OneX video to represent anthem on the ps4pro. Yep. Did they remove the video? Yep. But, it could be that EA gave them the video or at least permission to edit the video they provided.

If Sony just copied the video and edited it themselves without EA's permission EA could indeed sue them or at least get upset by it.

I agree with your sentiment, however I think what Butcher is saying that, Sony can't take a video belonging to a 3rd party pub and upload without their permission. The goes double for editing said video. So what he's getting at is it was EA who sent them the video and it was EA who did the botched photoshop job, not Sony.

I don't know which one is true. Sony did it or EA did it. All I know is, what a crap photoshop job was done on it. And whether it was Sony or EA, it shouldn't have been done anyway because it's a video from another system and not PS4 or Pro.

Still doesn't change the fact that videos like this aren't magically found by Sony/MS and then uploaded, they receive them from the publisher and have permission to upload them to their own channels. We do not know if Sony edited the video with permission or that EA/BioWare edited the video before giving it to Sony.

Same goes for that WatchDogs video, we don't know if MS did it all by themselves or not.

It shouldn't happen, but it does, something to do with being human I suppose...

Way too much energy wasted on a non-issue. All footage is early footage at this time and should be seen as more of a concept than a finished product. The point of the footage is to let PS4 fans know that Anthem is coming to PS4. There is no malice here, it's simply stock footage being shown to gamers.

I hope you people realize that certain youtube channels premier movie trailers....basically so and so company says hey can you put this on your channel...its not the channel who made the video they just had the duty of uploading it...

Sony employees have eyes don't they? Funny how people can easily spot photoshopped buttons but the people who's job it is to overlook the posting of videos did not.

EA provided the video, but Sony maybe should have vetted the video. OTOH, I'm not sure if this video was supposed to represent the PS version, or just the game in general. If it's the latter, then whatever, if it's the former, then Sony did something wrong, but EA still provided the video so they share the blame.

Don't get why MS fanboys are bragging about the power advantage of X1X over pro. You're paying more for it and it's coming out a year later after the pro. Everyone here knows MS chickened out of releasing a console at the same time as Sony. They knew if they released a console last year, Sony would beat it in power and affordability. Sony just has the better engineers. They also have the better games. I mean, you don't even need to wait for x1x as you can just build a stronger PC and play all the Xbox games now. Xbox got beat by PlayStation so bad, now Microsoft will probably never release a console in the same timeframe as Sony.
