Microsoft: “Too Early” to Predict Xbox Backwards Compatible Library

Microsoft made quite a show at E3 2017 by announcing that the original Xbox’s games would be backwards compatible on the Xbox One. Whether you agree or disagree about the success of backwards compatible Xbox 360 titles on the console, this was still a strong endeavour to appeal to old-school fans.

Make sense since OG xbox was the first and interrupted in the 7th gen in the 2nd year of it.

DigitalRaptor3241d ago

The fact that they say "library". That vague wording.

Did they confirm that you will be able to put your discs in and play? If so, there should be nothing technically stopping Sony from putting in PS2 discs and having them be read.

ApocalypseShadow3241d ago

My thinking digital is that as much as this is a good idea like Xbox 360 BC, if you don't have a popular game that's on the list, you still have to have your old system to play the game. If its not 100% BC, it's almost a waste.

If you have 25 games and only 16 are BC, you still need the old system to play the other 9. Instead of most popular based on the community, Microsoft should go for all of them. Some we know they can't because the publisher might choose to remake or remaster their game and keep it off the list, but not 100% wouldn't work for me on any system.

freshslicepizza3241d ago

Oh of course. My goodness, your theory is 100% or don't bother. Did you tell Sony to not bother with PSNow unless they can provide every PS3 title? Of course not. Did you tell Sony to do every remaster, not just cherry picking games like The Last of Us? Of course not. For someone who tells everyone you don't go into MS articles you sure can't help yourself letting it be known that no matter what they do it's never good enough.

Your input has no value and it's more sour grapes than anything just because the company you love to defend isn't bothering with it.

Another angry, uncalled for outburst from moldybread showing his true colors.

This is probably the biggest overreaction to a fairly straightforward and honest comment I've seen in a long time. It's not the first time you've attacked Apocalypse Shadow over a simple harmless opinion, and it's a trend next to putting words in other peoples' mouths and lying to misrepresent. I remember when you, unprovoked, went crazy over one of my comments which was nothing short of excitement over the PS4's upcoming lineup of games. You're all over the place dude. All over the place.

For someone who calls out people for trolling you sure do it very often on Sony articles. For someone who criticizes others for "cherry picking" you sure as heck do the same enough times. For someone who claims to hate the console war, you sure love to enjoy contributing to it. For someone who hasn't the intention to get a PS4, you're sure as heck always concerned about it.

Oh, and guess what moldybread... the company you love to defend isn't bothering to provide cross-play between Windows 10 and Steam versions of the same games, yet as a PC gamer you've completely failed to address that, and prefer (as always) to drag Sony and PS4 through the mud on every occasion you can find despite hating it when Sony fans criticise Microsoft, and looking for excuses until you get schooled out of the conversation. You have proven time and time again that your input has no value because it's soiled by incredible double standards, and that does everything to expose the agenda that you love to hide.

The PS4 will read DVD's but it won't read CD's and even though the majority of PS2 games came on DVD some did come on CD. Still, if you have a PS3 it will read and play PS1 disks while only the first generation PS3's will play PS2 games.

Actually, Microsoft and Sony did state prior to the release of their respective consoles that they would not be backward compatible so if you had a library of PS2 games you kept your old PS1 or PS2 or purchased the PHAT PS3. Likewise, if you had an XBox or XBox360 games you kept your original consoles.

Even though Microsoft did bring in backward compatibility two years after the launch of the XB1 on selected games you still needed your original disk to play so those people who did not have a copy of the retro game either had to borrow or purchase it and CD/DVD's are very easily scratched unless you are careful.

I have said this before and will say it again. "Backwards compatibility is a great value added feature but it will only sell consoles at the start of a generation not two years into their generation". As sales go I have not be proven wrong.

It was confirmed by Phil Spencer Original Xbox will support discs on Xbox One just like the Xbox 360 version

rainslacker3241d ago

Some PS2 games were on CD. Those wouldn't read in the PS4.

I don't think there is anything technially stopping Sony from putting PS2 DVD discs in, and they will read. The system just won't do anything with them.

If there were OGXbox games which were on CD, Im not sure how that proves the PS4 can read CDs. X1 may very well have the CD diode to read CD's. It can certainly read DVD's.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio13d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
