What Destiny 2 Can Learn From Overwatch

Destiny 2 is just a few short months away, and it’s looking to deliver on the promises Bungie struggled to keep the first time around. While they’ve regained a lot of faith from its community through a series of strong expansions, Bungie still has a lot of challenges to overcome if it wants Destiny 2 to be everybody’s go-to shooter. And where better to look for inspiration than from everybody’s current go-to shooter: Overwatch.

It's not a gonna replace Overwatch for PvP. That's for sure! I love D2, but many of the choices conceening mp are questionable.

BiglyBoyGeorge3261d ago

No way it's going to replace Overwatch, but it should at least give its own players more reason to play PvP.

I agree. PvE players are getting a much better experience than vanilla Destiny. It's evolved a ton. But mp is very strange. I will give them the benefit of the doubt, and I know they said they chose their server architecture for Destiny specifically, but imho, it seems that they don't separate mp from sp, and thus, have made choices that favor PvE.

It seems that 4v4 was chosen to help deal with P2P connectivity problems, as is every other choice that slows the gameplay down. I love 4v4 so it's fine. But how would PvP be with dedicated servers, 60 fps (PvP only), and a mode for friends like 6v6? Include leaderboards and private/custom matches, and balance it separately. Take the lead from other mmo's and completely separate them. This isn't asking a lot, as they have been standard with PvP games for a decade. It's ironic too, as Bungie is the company that did much of this work originally with Halo.

I know PvE sells, and PvP is for the more hardcore core base, who will play regardless, bit they also keep the game going when content is short.

It's definitely not going to replace Overwatch, but I think that the formulas are kind of similar. Destiny and Overwatch are both squad/team based and are trying to hit the same formulas for cooperating, queueing, matchmaking, etc.

OW is gamifying the matchmaking mechanics really well, and it makes it fun for hardcores and for casual fans. Destiny 2 has the opportunity to do the same, with a smaller focus on mp. They'll succeed if they're able to gamify the matchmaking stuff in the same way.

Make all the DLC free. That's part of why Overwatch is so great, especially for only $40 opposed to most $60 multiplayer only games.

Aenea3261d ago

Then they will have to add some microtransactions nonsense to it, more so than they have now. People need to be paid too for their work you know...

Summons753261d ago

As long as the MT are cosmetic only and can be obtained through normal gameplay then who cares. I'd much rather have that which I am not forced to buy than a $40 season pass that blocks me from content, a lot of which was held from the actual game. It's tough though because you are right devs need money for their work so DLC can't be free unless you compromise something else and have MT which 99.99% of the time is done very poorly and hurt the game. Overwatch did it right by having it cosmetic stuff only and for the most part easily obtained through normal gameplay.

Kupa3261d ago

DLC for Overwatch and Destiny mean very different things. Blizzard can afford to release cosmetics and an occasional map for free, because unlocking those cosmetics (usually as seasonal events) encourages people to spend money on Loot Boxes. That stuff is also substantially cheaper to make than Destiny's expansions.

If you're referring to Destiny's cosmetic stuff, I agree. I think it should copy Overwatch in that regard, and have ways of unlocking it via Loot Boxes that can be purchased or earned.

GhostlyJunior3261d ago

Do you mean like emotes or what? Are you saying they should add stuff like Taken King for free?

VigoMiAmigo3261d ago

Haha, I thought this guy was joking about the 14 currencies, but there totally is. It's even on the Destiny page!

iEchoic3260d ago

Haha wow, I didn't even see this before. Wtf

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing27d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9227d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit27d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing27d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9227d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
