Metroid Prime 4 announced for Switch

Metroid Prime 4 is in development for Switch, Nintendo announced during its E3 2017 spotlight showcase.

Nyxus3259d ago

Just a logo sadly, but still great news!

Testfire3259d ago

I feel the same. I have a bad feeling it may be a Switch swan song like Botw was for the Wii U. I hope I'm wrong though. Oh well, I'll have Axiom Verge soon enough in the meantime.

EddieNX 3259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

Itl be released next holiday or 2019

darthv723259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

There is a new 3ds metroid: samus returns coming out in the meantime and it looks pretty good too.

EatCrow3259d ago

The switch just released. I doubt it will be the same.

3259d ago
mikeslemonade3259d ago

Haha worst trailer in history!!

Nintendo did not win. SotC remake is better and showed gameplay. Samus on last gen hardware is not exciting.

iplay1up23259d ago

Switch is not going anywhere. It certainly wont be the swan song....Give me a break, it just came out!!

Testfire3259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

@ iplay1up2, I never said the Switch is going anywhere. I was hinting at to not expect Metroid Prime 4 anytime soon. If you expect to play it next year think again. I don't expect it for another 3 or 4 years, maybe more. All they showed was a logo....that's it! I hope I'm wrong, but we'll see.

@ EddieNX, I think next year is definitely out of the question unless this has been in development for a while now, which I doubt because they showed absolutely nothing. I'd say at the earliest 2020.

@ darthv72, I agree, unfortunately, I don't have a 3DS and don't plan on getting one as I have plenty of Switch, PS4 and PC games to play.

Agreed.
This and the New Pokemon game for Switch could have had CGI trailers and I would have been satisfied.
Still good news though. 7_7

Servbot413259d ago

Too bad Retro isn't making it. Remember what happened after Retro stopped doing the Prime series? We got the completely garbage Other M and Federation Force.

http://www.gameinformer.com...

_-EDMIX-_3259d ago

Really? I thought it was rumored that Retros working on it

Servbot413259d ago

I literally included the source in my post. Retro's key developers all left for Armature Studio anyway.

deafdani3259d ago

Other M wasn't garbage. It holds a 79 rating in Metacritic, which, sure, isn't as good as the Prime games... but it's still a pretty good game by itself.

There was more to that game than the shitty narrative, which was its major flaw, but people can't seem to be able to look past that.

Sirk7x3259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

The lead art director, programmer and designers all left Retro after Prime 3. The major heads that made the Prime series are gone, which is why it's been over 10 years now since a release.

Athos3259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

Retro are the one's making it. I cant name my source, but trust me it is a whole lot better than yours. Keep in mind I live in Redmond, WA. That might give you a clue.

Yes! I can't believe it's been almost 10 freaking years since the last Metroid game! I am so excited! My all-time favorite Nintendo franchise. Now I'm really going to have to get a Switch.

Servbot413259d ago

Yeah, we won't be seeing this until 2019 at the earliest. Couldn't even manage a single screenshot?

blawren43259d ago

I think the way the announced this is perfect. just enough to shut up people that claim/worry the franchise is dead, and little enough to keep the pitchfork wielding nutjobs at bay.

Segata3259d ago

Maybe not because it may still just be in the planning stages. That's what happened with Tokyo Mirage Sessions. It was announced before anything started.

THamm3259d ago

That was a hilarious way to introduce a new game. Last few real Nintendo consoles, Wash, Rinse, repeat, not going to fall for this bait and switch

-Foxtrot3259d ago

I'm beyond excited for the title it's self but at the minute Metroid 4 and Pokemon are basically just soulless announcements. One has a title and the other has a guy saying "yeah it's coming"

Great announcements but there was nothing on them at all. It's like Microsoft going on stage with a black screen behind them saying "Conker Returns" or Sony having "inFAMOUS 3" then that's it.

Servbot413259d ago

Any other first party would have been ripped apart for announcements like that, but Nintendo fans are rabid.

-Foxtrot3259d ago

I know, I literally just said this in the Pokemon article

We've just ripped the shit and mostly agreed with each other that despite who we thought "won" that Microsofts and even Sonys were filled with games we already knew about and games which won't be coming for a long while, possibly next year. However this gets a free pass and suddenly it's "Nintendo Won". I can't see Metroid out next year, not even Pokemon. Early 2019 titles at the most.

Even with games like The Last Guardian or Final Fantasy XV a decade ago they were announced with something.

Cobra9513259d ago

I don't know that "Nintendo won", but the excitement is over the possibilities sparked by the announcement. Who here didn't have memories of Samus jumping out of her ship on to a space derelict while that bass ambiance permeates, and then the familiar theme tune plays as we dive into her helmet? The mere possibility of a new such experience is worth more to me than half the trailers at the show.

Summons753259d ago

Yeah? Because The Last of Us Part 2 has gotten nothing but praise for being a "soulless announcement" with no gameplay or screen shots. Same with Good Beyond Evil 2, And Shenmue 3...but yeah nNintendo getting attacked is special treatment apparently.

Dan_scruggs3259d ago

Maybe that because OTHER first parties "cough" Sony... Have a pretty nasty history of announcing games that they know full well arent coming for years. So yeah I feel pretty vindicated having to wait 9 years across 2 systems for The Last Guardian to completely disappointing me. But hey. Maybe one day I can play Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Resident Evil 2 Remake, and Kingdom Hearts 3 with my grand kids.

blawren43259d ago

You can't argue that it wasn't effective. Not mentioned and people are complaining, the smallest teaser and many are at ease about Metroid's future. Think what would happen if Valve showed the half life logo, with in development. How would that go over...very well.

3259d ago
prankster1013259d ago

Nintendo fans are absolute idiots... Glad they're going the way of the dodo.

"Yeah 3DS was amazing innit? Sold 60 million in 6 years. Wow those are huge numbers".

Sony comes along and does it in 3.

EddieNX 3259d ago

Its still really amazingly exciting that METROID PRIME 4 is coming to Switch, it will be the star of next years e3. The best possible news for me.

blawren43259d ago

Because no release dates were mentioned and other games releasing in 2018 had release dates, I'm skeptical this will release before 2019. I can wait though.

Erik73573259d ago

For real though, people just trying to downplay it but they know it's another amazing game

JLynn9433259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

It's better to know that they are actually being worked on than to hear nothing about them. People want to know that the Switch is something that's being supported, and Nintendo certainly showed people that they are doing their part with that. This direct/spotlight was pretty much, "Hey, take a look at these things that are coming out soon. By the way, we're working on two titles that are highly wanted for a long time now, so you'll have things to look forward to, too." Would it be great if we saw something for Prime 4 and the Pokemon game? Of course. But, we still saw a lot of their other games, and we'll see those two eventually.

Servbot413259d ago

OK, but where are the games that are coming out between now and 2019 (at the earliest)? There's no way either a Pokemon game that doesn't even have a title and Metroid Prime 4 are coming out next year, and all we have to look forward to is Xenoblade 2 and Mario Odyssey this year, with some rehashes of Yoshi and Kirby next year.

-Foxtrot3259d ago

The problem here isn't with "Oh they shouldn't have announced them"...far from it, it's the hypocrisy from what's just happened at the other conferences that people have bitched about yet it's happened here and suddenly it's like "they shot this out of the park" or "they won". I just hate double standards in general that's all. I'm glad they are coming but at least give us something...having nothing to show seems like they could be a while out. It's nice to see support which is what we wanted but it's more to do with the reason I've made above more then anything.

JLynn9433259d ago

@Serv That whole direct was about games coming out this year or next. Treehouse will have other announcements (smaller obviously) like always. There is no pleasing the anti-Nintendo crowd.

@Foxtrot There's no hypocrisy on my end. The Sony and Microsoft conferences didn't have as much I'm interested in. I didn't even say Nintendo won (though between what I saw and now know is coming, I'm personally happiest after theirs). "Winning" E3 is just a stupid fanboy **** measuring contest. Everyone likes different stuff. I was hoping there'd be more announced for PS4 that I'm interested in, but it wasn't much for me. Other people love Spider-Man and God of War. I don't. I was disappointed, but it's no big deal. Days Gone looks good, and I'm sure there will plenty for me to buy for the system the next year or two. For Nintendo, after the recent Pokemon Direct, I was losing faith that they'd be smart enough to do a Pokemon RPG for the Switch, so I'm happy knowing that it's actually happening. Is it some over-the-top, "winning" move? No, but I did have nearly the same reaction to finding out it was finally happening as I did to the FF7 remake. You can't skip an opportunity to bash though.

freshslicepizza3259d ago

That's hilarious, Sony fans claimed victory over FFVII remake and Shenmue 3 one year. Another year the forums went crazy over the Uncharted 4 teaser and salivating over the graphics which were not even a representation of actual gameplay but now they want to chastise Nintendo because this is the first year Sony hasn't shown games which are obviously years away from release?

These are not new IPs they just want confirmation they are coming. Yes I hate this practice but don't all of the sudden call them out on it if you don't do the same for when Sony or Microsoft do it.

Servbot413259d ago

At least both of those had actual trailers and titles.

_-EDMIX-_3259d ago

The problem has nothing to do with that those games are years away it is kind of expected that lots of games are seeing announced will not come within the year the problem is that they were simply just a title on the screen....

I mean when was Crackdown 3 and sea of Thieves announced?

When was breath of the wild announced?

The problem has a very little to do with the announcement being far away from release and has a lot to do with the method and how they announced it would basically zero gameplay and some texts on the screen.

I'm pretty positive all the Publishers that are at this trade show probably have a bunch of games that are in development that we don't know about yet.

Pretty damn sure they could have simply said here's a title on the screen in moved on, do you seriously think that these companies just don't have anything in development?

Athos3259d ago

Actually Sony fans went nuts over the reveal that they had opened up a kickstarter for Shenmue, nothing had been developed. FF7 remake hadn't even gotten off the ground yet and afterwards they decided that they would divide it up into chapters

I dont know about Pokemon but I can guarantee you Metroid has been in development for a while.

i would have been hyped as fuck just to know infamous 3 was comming, just as I was with metroid 4

Erik73573259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

You know Nintendo's talent...they will be amazing games.

Nintentional3258d ago

wow, hell has frozen over. I never thought I'd agree with a Foxtrot comment hahaha.

Sirk7x3258d ago

The Metroid Prime trilogy are some of the greatest titles in the history of video games though. Just knowing that it's going to happen, I was jumping for joy. It shows that Nintendo is planning on giving its all with the Switch, which is something that people have still been unsure of. Returning franchises that have been missing for 10 years, new development studios, and a Pokemon game that's finally coming to a mainstay console. It's fantastic news for anyone that owns or plans to own a Switch.

EddieNX 3259d ago

Goosebumps overload. Cant wait to see it , more than every other game.

Eiyuuou3259d ago

And this just assured that I'll buy a Switch.

Servbot413259d ago

So you can play a game that won't be out until 2019 at the earliest? Might as well wait for the New Nintendo Switch XL lite 3Di bundled with Metroid Prime 4.

EddieNX 3259d ago

Theres TONS of sick games coming to Switch, the list is getting silly.

Summons753259d ago

MP4 will probably be next years big holiday title. It's been rumored to be in development for a few years now.

_-EDMIX-_3259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

I mean I don't disagree with you that they're probably going to be waiting for a while but I don't really think that's a problem.

Nintendo's problem is simply that lots of people might be on the fence of purchasing it because of questionable support these announcements even without trailers at least have some people comfortable about the systems future enough to an invest in it today.

I may not agree with how the announcement went down but I definitely 100% agree that it needed to happen.

I mean this person just guaranteed they were going to buy a switch because of this announcement so I would argue that they did their job simply by seeing some of the comments lots of people feel more comfortable about their purchase knowing that there's going to be support in the future.

Once again I don't necessarily agree that there's no trailer but I believe that it's more important that they let people know that it exists at all because I just don't think they could afford to go into the holiday season with people not knowing what the future is in store for that platform.

With Nintendo basically having very little third-party support they were just going to get eaten alive in the fall by Battlefront Destiny Call of Duty and all the other juggernauts. This makes sense for Nintendo much more than it ever would Sony or Microsoft because they already have deep established bases with a crap ton of games to where they could afford to hold off so many announcements

At this point Nintendo just does not have that luxury.

They're losing market share and they need to do something about it.

So I would say this was the right choice even if it's not that glamorous, they just need to get the word out that these exist at all.

@summ-I'm extremely doubtful that that game is coming next fall for god sakes there's not even any footage of the game. I mean all of us were doubtful that God of War was going to be coming fall 2017 LAST YEAR even with all the footage we saw the year before so I'm not entirely sure why you really think this is coming next year fall.

Eiyuuou3259d ago

Well yeah, I'll buy it when it releases.

Erik73573259d ago

*buy a switch when it comes out

Cobra9513259d ago

I'll wait to see the real game, not the promise alone. If it fits the bill, I'm right behind you.

Servbot413259d ago

"No, you have to buy a Switch right now in order to get a game that doesn't come out for at least two years!"

3259d ago
_-EDMIX-_3259d ago

Well this is why I felt previously that it was a good idea that they definitely get the word out there that these games are coming even if they don't have a trailer.

They need to let their Community know that indeed these games are coming because they're kind of in a tight situation right now.

I’m just about to finish it and I think that’s really harsh score. I was thinking more like a seven. All the parts, apart from the desert are fantastic and I think it’s the second best Metroid prime in the whole series.
