Is The Season Pass Format Dead?

A major EA game that doesn't support season passes? Is this the beginning of a wonderful new world of free content or the start of something worse?

My only worry is the model that replaces it. I have always assumed that they will continue to evolve their pay schemes, I can't wait to see what comes next. Overwatch is pretty popular, so maybe EA will add boxes with skins or something akin to that. But it's much better than splitting the base.

The thing is EA is still going to do season passes but the reason why Battlefront II doesn't have one is because the reception that Battlefront 1 got.

It's the same reason why Titanfall 2 doesn't have it either because the playerbase number ended up going really low and all the new maps we're pretty barren.

When I work for a website our site manager spoke with various developers over at dice. The idea was that Battlefield 4 was supposed to follow the no season pass model with free DLC however that didn't pan out and following the other Battlefield games they ended up being the same.

EA won't lose out on the opportunity of the season pass with such a huge title.

Yes I know it Star Wars but like mansion the reception for the first game was it all too good

it probably makes more sense to keep the community active with free content DLC which means EA can milk a larger group of people with microtransactions for a longer period of time

like in Titanfall 2. free map and weapon dlc but pilot and titan camo, banners, and especially prime titans all cost money. people are probably more willing to spend cash on MTs when dlc is free

and like you said splitting the base is never a good idea

But what does it matter?

If they're literally telling you all major DLC going forward like Maps and playlist types will be free I'm not sure it matters all that much if they were charging for something else like Cosmetics, all it actually proves is this is just about wanting more.

So I definitely agree that they might just start selling cosmetics but I'm not entirely sure why you would worry about that ,please stop demonizing a company for trying to make money when the goal of the company is to do just that, I think when we have season passes being taken out of a game and being given completely for free for the duration of the game we need to accept that as a victory , as opposed to finding the next thing to complain about I believe that is just ridiculous.

We asked for more content
we asked for a single player mode
we asked for the season passes to be free

I think it's a bit strange to find something else to complain about when all three of those things have been given with this game.

Trust me them adding Cosmetics is not going to be a worry for me, those top three features were the biggest thing I worried about.

I think the Halo model is perfect, forces you to actually play the game and look awesome as you get better.

@_-EDMIX-_ I am not demonizing them at all. And I agree thatit often makes more sense, like a f2p model with lower count, to get as many people on board as possible. If the quality is good, ppl will gladly pay for the product, eg. Overwatch. They HAD to do this to get ppl to buy into the amazing IP again. Though honestly, my best guess is that they were very short on time with BF1. When I say, I can't wait to see what happens next. I mean that. It's always evolving and it's interesting to me to watch the back and forth between community and publisher.

I do believe that now we are seeing a more precise initiative concerning pay models, choosing the one that makes the most sense for the title. Games like D2, BF2 etc. will have the player count, so splitting the base is a bad idea. But offering cosmetics, or something akin to this, is NOT a bad idea.

I've always supported the games that I love.

But it won't be just EA that attempts to emulate the MT success of Overwatch, it'll be nearly everyone..... Or at least Ubi, Microsoft, EA, Activision. Didn't Squenix even mention it? It's not exactly a pretty alternative. Games as a service will be the new evil.

"please stop demonizing a company for trying to make money when the goal of the company is to do just that"

Oh no poor EA only getting millions of £so from game sales however will they survive!

JasonBloodbourne3270d ago

I hope so but I doubt it. One thing I've noticed about these season passes (Shit name by the way) is they are getting more expensive every year.

Goldby3270d ago

And it seems like less and less every year

IamTylerDurden13270d ago

Not all games, but games like BF, CoD, and Fallout are ridiculous. Even Injustice 2 is bs when they know an ultimate edition is coming down the road. However, games like KZ SF and Mercenary, Gravity Rush 2, and Driveclub have offered a ton of free content and/or very reasonable season passes. Infamous and Wolfenstein practically gave us new games for $15.

Codedan3270d ago

I agree. I would rather buy specific content I know I would enjoy.

Mister_Wolf3270d ago

And it is always a gamble, we don't know the quality of the content we will get too.

SegaGamer3270d ago

Fallout 4 is one of the most overpriced season passes around, possibly the most overpriced. The season pass costs as much as a newly released AAA game.........that's insane. I have seen more content in other season passes than i have this game and they don't cost anywhere near the same amount. Bathesda are ripping people off with that season pass. Even if i liked Fallout games i wouldn't touch it.

IamTylerDurden13270d ago

Fallout DLC is classically great. FO3 and NV were absolutely some of the best dlc around and totally worth it. Remember Point lookout? Old World Blues? I personally enjoyed Honest Hearts, and those Randall Clark diary entries were a phenomenal touch. Fallout 4 DLC just didn't live up to the Fallout DLC lineage, Nuka World and Far Harbour had the potential to be incredible.

Gamers have spoken... and we don't want season passes. Maybe game developers are finally starting to listen.

They have found other and better ways to monetize your money, loot boxes.

_-EDMIX-_3270d ago

I don't know if it's as much as to say developers are listening. I believe Electronic Arts Ubisoft and Microsoft are definitely testing things out to see if they would gain any more money in the long run by not splitting up the community.

But to my understanding none of these companies have ever come out and stated as a publisher they are no longer doing season passes or no longer charging for them I should say because I have no problem with a game receiving content for the long run.

So I would be weary about seeing this as a permanent thing because a lot of these Publishers have not really come out and stated this about all of their projects.

Consider that Ubisoft did this with Rainbow Six but still has a season pass for Watch Dogs 2, what about Publishers like Bethesda or CD projekt Red?

So I would argue that based on what publisher it is or the type of content or the value of it some consumers don't mind season passes I mean consider The Witcher 3 post launch content was praised to death despite it being charged for.

nitus103270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

The reason why tThe Witcher 3 gets praised is that the two expansions "Hearts of Stone" and "Blood and Wine" are standalone games in their own right and are quite long (approx 10 and 30 hours respectively) and depending on how you look at it are very good value for your money.

From the main game, you can enter the expansions although the developers do have a recommended level which is mentioned at the very start of the Witcher game. You also have the option of playing those games separately although you will start at a level that is appropriate for the expansion. If you choose to enter the expansions from the main game you have to start particular quests before the expansion become available. IMHO this is the best way to play these expansions although others may think differently.

All other DLC and there is quite allot of it for The Witcher 3 is free.

Mega_Volnutt3270d ago

Yeah, games have turned into a $110 reasons to not buy them day one and I'm sick of it. I miss the good old gaming days.

nitus103270d ago

You are right "real" gamers have spoken but unfortunately, there are casuals who are either idiots, have more money than sense or just like to win without putting in any effort and those are the people that the publishers are targeting.
