BC is convenient for the people who like to play old games, which is a small percentage of people. I would be happy if PlayStation had it ,but it doesn't matter because I always keep my old consoles and if they die on me I replace them, and it usually doesn't cost me more than 40-50 dollars. It's not like if you dont have BC you can't play old games. MS had to do this because they don't have much else. Not having BC isnt going to stop me from buying Sony's consoles because they offer so many great new games. MS offering BC isnt going to get me to buy an Xbox because there are only a few games last gen I would play and this gen nothing I want so far besides Ori that is also on PC. I would use it occasionally on PS because they have so many great games over the decades but I can live without it.

I'm a Sony user and I can only speak for myself but I play PS1 classics on the Vita TV and have a fat ps3 to play PS2 games on.

Hey I would personally love more BC support on PS4 but honestly I'm happy that Sony is putting in effort for making brand new games first and worrying about BC 2nd.

I mean as much as I love BC support on XB1 my library for the platform is 90% BC which is not really something to be proud of in this day and age.

I am just glad MS is seeing BC as a positive and really hope they keep BC in mind as consoles and technology iterates moving forward.

There is no disputing BC is a great feature more options the better however xbox did BC 99% down to a lack of games this generation so what can we do oh yeah make all the old games work, this wasn't planned out the box when let's face BC Is most useful launch period is normally barren games wise 1-3 top games then 6 months of not a lot, then BC is fantastic 3 years after launch when really should be smashing all the new current gen games. I had BC on my PS3 until it died tried to get it repaired never happened so just got another PS3 BC was cool but once your a couple of years into the console surely it's all about new games.
It's nice to go back reminisce and of course always got time for the classics but struggling to get through current games let's alone banging through last gen again.

It doesn't, actually. They only say "roughly" 50% have tried it at some point, they never mention the percentage of users that consistently use the feature on a daily/weekly basis.

Actually it proves Sony are right when they say a tiny portion of users actually end up using Backwards Compatibility. If XB1 has 30 million users and the average overall play time is 2 hours per night, each night, of a full 365 days per year then 21,840 Million hours would be spent on the console per year, overall hours gaming since BC launched on XB1 will be higher than that 1 year period.
The total time spent could be 40 Billion hours by now or higher.

500 million hours is 1.25% of XB1's play time, based on these estimates it's very close to Sony's figures, well within margin of error for data collection.

I doubt anyone thinking honestly would consider 1.25% a large number relative to the whole.

It never ends but at the same time I don't remember backwards compatibility being a talking and selling point four years in during the 7th gen.

Don't get me wrong, I want BC on all consoles, I use it. That said the library for XBO is not all that great.

I have multiple games on BC on my XB1 and the only thing Ive played is some Red Dead Redemption which was my favorite game of all last gen and I didnt play more than 20 minutes. Its a great game dont get me wrong but I want to play games I havent played before.

I dont understand the need to play old games on a new console I mean honestly I have such a backlog of stuff this gen that I can barely make time to play let alone finding time to replay games Ive already bought and played from years ago.

I hate to say it like this because I dont want to come off fanboyish and I know this will but BC has never been important to the mainstream in the past and the only reason I can think of for it to be so "important" on XB1 now is the lack of exclusives in general coming from MS but even more so the lack of high quality exclusives on the system. Games like Quantum Break, Ryse, Dead Rising 3/4, Sunset Overdrive, solid games not amazing but selling below average none of them hit 2 mil retail copies sold.

I wish Sony offered Backwards Compatibility. I still have several PS3 games I keep meaning to play and it would be nice to declutter, putting my PS3 in storage. Knowing Sony, they would probably want us to repurchase the games digitally.

I like Xbox One Backwards Compatibility but it's not perfect. I still prefer my Xbox 360 because I have full control of my saves. Xbox One requires Live to manage cloud saves, while I prefer backing up and restoring from USB.

All said, both consoles have made many improvements since launch and I'm excited to see what's next.

PC has the best BC you can have... I often play old games (Some old games are still very enjoyable to play). I also play new ones. I call that choice.

With the Xbox platform, Microsoft are giving choice to players. BC, EA Access, Early access and game pass are nice features! If youre not interested, you just don't use it... Dunno why so much peoples are arguing so much about that since a few days.

On the other side Sony decided that EA access is not a good value... Probably to not hurt PS Now. Don't get me wrong, Ps Now is a nice feature. This week, the Sony guy say that BC on PS4 is a highly requested feature by the the players fanbase and again, they decide to not push it...

Say what you want, but from my point of view, Sony are selfish, they decide what is good for players. Yes they had a great Year for exclusives, they have great first party games, on that point, microsoft is struggling right now.

I'm just saying that having choice is always a good thing, I play mostly on PC, I have choice and Microsoft are going that way, i think that's a good thing for gaming, but yes they need to push more first party games! And i hope Sony will give more choice to players in the futur.

Sony isn't all wrong though, going by the stats MS put out, it does prove Sony point that its a feature that isn't use as much. BC is a feature that's nice to have, but overtime it starts to become less important, when new games start to come out. I used the BC on the original fat PS3, for little bit, but when the games started coming, I stop using it. If playing old games is that important to you, why would you want to upgrade to XB1, when you can keep playing on your 360 instead. This feature is becoming a dead horse now, way to many articles focusing on this, rather than talking about E3 and what games and announcements are going to be shown.

so, each XB1 that used BC used it for about (508m hrs/15m XB1s) 33.86 hrs (less than a day & a half) average...
BC has been available for 575 days (from Nov. 12, 2015)...
so, for the 575 days that BC was around, XB1s only used it for 1 & 1/2 days...
that's even less than the Ars Technica data...

would be even worse if we actually have how many hours in a day XB1s are used...

example: in 2014, Gamespot claimed XB1 are used for 5 hours (source: https://www.gamespot.com/ar... )...
so, 575 days * 5 hrs * 15m XB1s = 43.12 b hrs...
508m hrs would just be 1.1 % of that...

BC is cool. And sure I'd like it, but given the choice, I wouldn't suddenly start playing old games more, I'd only play them when there is a lull of new games I want to play.

Which as a PS4 owner doesn't happen often, I can't say the same for X1 as I don't own one, but let's be honest, if your spending A large amount of time on older games this far into the generation, then either you have a lot of free time, or there isnt enough compelling games for you to play on your console.

If your system is struggling for content, then making is BC is a pretty basic ploy. It's also basic knowledge that BC on a playstation is a conflict of interest in terms of the investment originally into GAIKAI which is now fundamentally PS NOW.

They said 1.5 percent of the total time played by active users was spent on backwards compatibility. 50% of users may have tried it but it doesn't mean anything if they're not actively playing. Sony isn't speaking out against it. They're just saying it's not their focus. Fair enough.

As a PC gamer (who does own consoles), who has access to titles over two decades old at this point, I don't see why so many try to look at backwards compatibility as such a trivial thing.
You put out new hardware. You already spent a decade selling the old hardware. Let the new tech support old games, offer a trade in deal on the new tech, and make everyone happy.
It's not that hard to run an emulator on newer hardware. Especially when those working on it are the brains behind both pieces of tech.

The fact that people are having an argument whether or not backwards compatibility is a good feature is absolutely ridiculous. Simple answer should always be yes, but is hilarious when fanboys are so abrupt to defend Sony on this regard.

Saying ignorant comments such as "I'll just play them on my PS3" sure f*cker that's very efficient, having to plug in a previous console (if you still own it btw) just so you can play a PS3 title; "PSnow has a lot of classics anyways" yeah they do but these service just like the Xbox Game Pass absolutely suck and you have to pay for it!! If you have a PS3 disk for RDR guess what you still have to pay for it again, on Xbox you don't so that argument is pretty contradicting to what Microsoft offers.

I been a Steam account holder since 2004 that was 13 years ago!! Guess what any of games that I purchased 13 years are playable at any given moment, I didn't lose my right to play the games if I upgraded my PC or went to a different OS. Those games will always be playable. That's what Microsoft is trying to do, have an eco system just like Steam.

I have both systems btw before either fanboy camp jumps down my on me. But at this moment PC still king so don't waste your time teaching me about teraflops or 4K when I'm running a Titan X on a Samsung KS9000.

It is a massive marketing tool for Microsoft on 3 fronts.

1 - The most obvious is offering a "handy" but not essential feature that is better than what their rivals offer. Even if only 5% of people use it regularly it doesn't matter as long as potential future customers who want to buy a console look at the comparison reviews and see X1 offers a feature they "think" is vital and offers it better than what Sony offer. It may suay future people into buying X1 thinking its much better because of this feature, and people want quality.

2 - It has boosted the Games With Gold programme that was in danger of hampering the X1 on two sides. Firstly, people would wonder whether an upgrade is worth it if most of the free games each month can only be played on 360, and secondly, X1 owners would become negative about owning a console and paying a subscription when several games a month do not even work on their new toy. What BC has done is make owning an X1 a vital purchase because now it plays ALL GWG games, whereas a 360 only plays some of them. So now it makes sense to upgrade while still getting all the bonus games. Secondly it also allows Microsoft a much bigger library of games to give away each month meaning more games, and more (older) AAA titles, than relying purely on a much, much smaller X1 range of titles. Without 360 BC there would not be 3/4 games a month given away, it would be more likely 2 and that would look bad against Sony and what they offer, so its opened up new opportunities to reward subscribers and look like it can be the better platform to own to get the best rewards (in theory anyway!)

3 - It now opens up Game Pass, the Netflix Subscription-style service, that Microsoft can see is the future because its happened in TV, Movie and Music domains and it works and video games are lagging behind. Without BC, Game Pass would be heavily limited, and people may not adopt it, as people want not just quality but also quantity. Now they can keep adding 360 games to the library along with X1 titles and it will keep growing and hopefully increase subscribers who will effectively be paying Microsoft TWO subscriptions rather than just one for Xbox Live. Again, Game Pass would be another 2 or 3 years off being a major viable option without BC 360 games.

So when fanboys talk about how nobody uses the service and how older games are not important, they are clearly missing the bigger picture of the marketing opportunities and additional services that it opens up to Microsoft, and clearly it is working because for the past few weeks all anyone seems keen to talk about is how Microsoft has BC, and all future clueless console buying people will look at is "It has it, and everyone says it is better than what Sony offers!" and that is what will sell it to them, regardless of what a Sony fanboy's opinion of it is. And the more it is discussed on gaming sites, where Sony fanboys try to rip it to pieces, the more it is getting promoted and talked about that will benefit Microsoft the more they invest into the three reasons I gave above.

Remember, the best salesmen are not the ones that sell you something you want and need, but the ones that make you believe that you have to have something you do not want or need.

If it's there then it's a good thing. But if you don't use it and many don't. It does not matter.

I often find once I've played the game. If I come back to it years later. It's just not the same.

The reason you purchase consoles is to play current gen games. I do like this option, nothing wrong with it.

I still play 360 games on my Xbox One all the time. I own close to 100 digital 360 games. Would love to see them implement backward compatibility with the OG Xbox soon and I believe they will.

With a full time job and kids, I don't have to luxury to play a whole lot of games anymore. With all the new stuff coming out, I don't have time to look back. Going forward is my only option and my choice. If people want BC, that's great, they should have it.

Backwards compatibility: a feature that is not a system seller, and even if it was, doesn't lead to sales of new games, only of old or even used games.

Bc is good. I would definitely play games like Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter or Soulcalibur. On the other hand I don't even have time to finish my PS4 backlog and I don't turn on my pc full of games at all.

I'm mainly a Sony fan am NOT bashing MS, so relax. I also own ALL of the current and last gen systems and find greatness in them ALL. I think BC is a good thing, and it's free. But I honestly don't play last gen games anymore. I've beat those games or lost interest in them, plus have a big backlog of NEW games. And in my circle of friends, NOT one has played a last gen game since...er, last gen. Oh well, lets move on from this topic folks, it's not worth the time and effort. If you don't have any new games to play then enjoy your old games again...on BC or the original systems.

Personally I like the feature and have used it quite a bit, I recently moved to the UK and can't use my 360 so it's nice to be able to play some games I missed on my Xbox One with GWG. That said I understand why people aren't high on the feature. To me seems obvious Sony analyzed the data from original PS3 models which included BC and felt it wasn't warranted. Nothing wrong with that if they felt it wasn't worth it financially. Two companies taking different approaches but neither impacts the other - depends on what the consumer is looking for IMO. MS can't rest on BC though, they need to start delivering attractive games. Hopefully get a better idea tomorrow at E3.

Lol yeah people use BC because Xbox doesn't have a lot of good exclusives to play. Simple fact.

1. Market sales data and worldwide PlayStation domination shows how MS is wrong on relying on BC.

2. PlayStation already had BC on PS3 and statistics proved it was an unused feature on PlayStation.

3. When a console I is lacking exclusive games as Xbox is lacking, its user base has no choice but to look for other uses, in this case, BC.

4. And that is why that, if BC is being used on Xbox, it doesn't mean is going to be used on PlayStation because they have a strong stream of amazing games so PlayStation gamers will rather invest on its amazing library of new exclusive games than play old games as on Xbox.

Wuchang is great. Nine Sols didn’t have a physical copy so I never played it but I’ve heard good things so I will check it out. I stopped playing sports games many years ago when before the card dlc’s or whatever they’re called.

I hated that he died. The game was good but you never want to see a character you can relate or enjoy to die off like that. We wanted more Joel not less. Still a really good game but that part will always sit poorly with many

Not gonna lie, I think they made a big mistake. I mean I like a big unimaginable shock moments as much as the next person. It was just too soon though. If you’re going to kill off the main character you need a solid back up that people love just as much to carry the weight of the loss. If you’re setting it up for a trilogy then he really should have died at the end of 2 or half way through 3.

Who cares, that was like 6 years ago.

I don't mind the story, I think it is interesting in its own. But I would much prefer it stays as a story between Joel and Ellie (And I don't hate Abby, but it just feels like a third wheel when I play the game, feel like it is not a story about her). Joel can live with the consequences in a different way than just get killed off, his emotional conflicts between him and Ellie, Abby and everyone else would have a lot of interesting stories to tell, not any less than just get killed off.

So we as players, who controlled Joel in the first game, can get immersed and feel the guilt with him, instead of getting angry that he got killed.

TLOU Part 2 was a great game, but the entire game made me mad

Personally I liked that they killed off Joel, his death scene was great. The story was good and how revenge drives a person. The last quarter of the game was dumb after Tommy told Ellie where Abby was located. She leaves the farm goes in an arduous trek killing many more people along the way. Finds Abby in a cage releases her they fight, Ellie gets two fingers bitten off, and suddenly she doesn’t want to fight and kill Abby anymore, lets her leave with a warning even though she was the one losing the fight. Why go the rough all of that hassle just to let the focus of your hatred just leave. Should have stwyed home with Diana and keep all her fingers intact. Still a great game with a good story and I liked Abby I saw no reason for all her hate.

They could have killed Tommy and made it a revenge story with Joel and Ellie going after Abbie.

ND was trying so hard to make me sympathize with Abbie and it just wasn't working. I just don't understand how you make a "revenge is bad story" while having me mow through hundreds of NPCs just to get to the main culprit and just...not finish the job. Druckman is a terrible story teller.
