What People on Missing the Point on Backwards Compatibility

It seems Microsoft and Sony both have some controversial comments, when it comes to backwards compatibility. Microsoft is having a back and forth with gaming sites like, Artechnica for release information that states only 1.5% of Xbox One gamers play their old 360 games. At the same time Sony seems to be taking some flack for the lack of the backwards compatible feature. But, they're all missing the point when it comes to this issue. It all comes down to consumer freedom.

If there is BC I will choose when to jump in the new console because I can keep playing with my friends no matter they play in their new gen console.
MS is destroying the new gen thing and adopting PC ways......is more consumer friendly.
We should all cellebrate that.

Is not just about playing old games anymore it is about playing with friends that has the old console too.

Sanity has left the building.

I would rather have it than not. Even if I don't use it often, its nice knowing it's there.

The real reason people don't go back more is the visual quality. They go back more than Sony claims. But the big thing really is moving forward. My favorite gaming moments occurred on Original Xbox and 360. More Original than 360. The reason I want a re-master of Brute Force so badly is I had my all-time favorite gaming moment in that game.

Going forward Microsoft guarantees I don't have to wait for re-masters anymore. The game will look incredible today, but will scale and improve on the next system. And the design of the Xbox OS makes architectures irrelevant. The CPU from the 360 is very different but the games just work because of OS design.

We're at a time where the realism of the games will make BC not hurt anymore. Everything will age fine. I could already know my Brute Force moments will be there but now visually improved. And since Microsoft has it's own physics hardware now you gotta wonder if we will see games update things like weather in the future through AI. There are a lot of possibilities going forward and backward compatibility will matter tremendously.

You say that people would go back more if it had greater visual quality...

Well consider PS5 is backwards compatible with PS4 games, couldn't they have DLC updates with better settings and assets this time around? I think it would be awesome to pay $15 for better quality compared to buying remasters for $60.

As long as they use dynamic resolution and have BC they're fine. The key is the ability to adjust to new architectures through software. The architectures could be Zen or ARM next generation. Sony has to have a software solution to save money. Though the next generation will be 7nm and at that point cost isn't that much of a factor at launch.

There's a balance on the business side of things that has to be maintained. Sometimes, what is good for the customer doesn't always make sense to put in if it means that the business stuff can't be achieved. At the same time, what is good for a small group, may actually affect the entire consumer base, and not everyone wants to pay for certain things. Ultimately, while consumers should always think of their own interest, it's also good for the consumer to look at it from the business side of things, because if the business side can't be maintained, it means that the consumer side may eventually get nothing.

I'll leave it vague like that, because it's bed time, and I know you're smart enough to fill in the blanks without me writing an essay expanding the statement.:)

dcbronco3304d ago

The business side is important of course. I've posted people should spend less time trashing certain companies and buying exclusives the CEO of their favorite company says cost them money seven out of ten times.

But more people holding onto their games isn't a bad thing. It may seem so because re-masters sell 2 or 3 million additional copies of a game. But they are often discounted. $39.99 instead of $59.99. They are usually made for the biggest hits. Games that sell 7-20 million copies. On those games, if half are traded in and re-sold, it eliminates 3.5 to 10 million potential customers. If built-in re-masters become the norm many of those games won't get traded in. That means a lot more full price new copies will be sold. Even if on sale the dev gets more than the nothing the get from Gamestop. So built-in re-masters are good for devs too.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing58d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9258d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit58d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing58d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9258d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
