B/C is an absolute nonsense feature. Playing games you already own on a new console is in no way a selling point. Like others have stated this is nothing more than a petty attempt to cover up their lack of exclusives.

I find it hilarious that people think it's a dumb feature. Just like EA access and game pass. Since when was having more games a bad thing?🤔

To be honest I enjoy playing old games in a "will say in a alternate state of mind" lol then the old games are fun and have amazing graphics 😜

PS5 needs BC, it may not be a much used feature but the move to X86 means that they have excuse. PS3 emulation is difficult and requires a lot of power so PS4's lack of it is understandable but I own over 200 PS3 games digitally and I'd to play them when my PS3 dies

If it's not worth it why do they continue to push PS Now subscriptions? If there was no demand they wouldn't offer the service and wouldn't be expanding it to PC.

No.... I have a HUGEEE!!! Backlog of PS2 and ps1 games that i still own that just sit there that i would love to play. Shadow Hearts,Grandia, Dot Hack... I would go crazy if they can be BC on ps4. It is possbile as well they just dont want to

I have never honestly really cared about backwards compatibility. I keep all my old systems in case I want to play something old, but really, I rarely ever do once there is a decent selection of games on the current system. I had a fat PS3, I might have used the BC feature twice. I still have a slim PS3, I may have turned it on 3 times since the PS4 released. About the only old games I play are on PC because mods keep them alive longer. With no mods on the consoles and DLC pretty much limited to the first year after a game releases for most games, what is the point in backwards compatibility? I want to play new games, new experiences, not sit around with the gaming equivalent of syndicated reruns on TV. Just my .02

Sony PR: BC is not useful (reality: PSnow is dead so we want customer to buy HD/remaster instead; same thing but sure sound better then straight up BC doesn't it).

I could care less about backwards compatibility including PS Now,I play my PS4 Pro for current gen games only.I still have my PS3 & if I decide to play a last gen game I can easily boot up my PS3 & play.

It's nice to have at the launch of a New Gen System. But after 9 months not that big of a deal people are playing newer games for their new system.

I still have my old consoles to play the handful of games I either loved or have backlogged. It would be great if they did implement bc on new consoles so I could clear some space and just have one console to deal with instead of two...

It's nice but not necessary. I sometimes play back catalogues of games, but I generally play current gen.

IMO Sony will be forced to add BC, eventually, because console generations are becoming shorter. If future consoles only lasts for say, two years, then BC becomes much more relevant. Personally, I'm quite happy with shorter console generations if it means avanced gaming, but I would feel a little put out if I can't play fairly recent games on my new console.

They can't support it because of the obscure PS3 architecture.

PS5 will and everyone calling it useless now will say it's great to have. It's the N4G way.

I want backwards compatibility, I'll definitely use it for PS5 if available. It just makes things easier, being able to utilize your older library, and I like to revisit older games as time goes by, and you cant always depend on having an old console laying around that works and hooked up ready to go. It makes a difference at the beginning of a new gen when there is little to actually play on the console. I would imagine having backwards compatibility for the PS5 will be easy, where the PS3's cell made it very difficult.

Judging by most of these comments lets hope the PS5 is not BC with PS4 games so they can just move on

Yes it's worth having. Not everyone will use it but for those of us who accrue a library and want to go back it's a great feature to have unless you want to hook up a ton of consoles. It's a small percentage of people who use it, I get it, but even if it's 1% of 50 million that's still 500,000 users who do want to play older games.

If it's so much to ask for backwards compatibility through hardware then why not give us a service that has everything digitally that we 500,000 could subscribe to?

There has to be alternatives.

Even if they did make BC a thing, it would raise the prices of whatever games work with it. So unless you already own it, you are gonna spend a ton of more money to be able to play it and that's if you can even find it. Thats the big downside to Xbox's BC. You are spending more to play less.

BC on the PS4 WOULD be a great addition. Althought it would not be greatly used, I'm sure that everyone has a game or two that they would return to from time to time or even just once. How long will the "novelty" last for playing old games is different for everyone. With the slew of new games already playable and the newer ones soon to arrive in the near future, BC is definitely not needed but still welcomed in my opinion.

Its a feature I would use occasionally. I would definitely be great to have.

BC is all fine and good as long as it doesn't add to the cost of the system.
I had a PS3 FAT and it actually had the PS2 chip or hardware inside the machine as well as the cell or it wouldn't have worked because the architecture was so different.
Did I use it?

Occasionally at first to hold me over for new releases but after the new releases started to flow I didn't really use it at all and with remasters or remakes that improve the old games, I finally didn't really see the need for it myself at all.

There must have been a bunch like me as well because they soon removed the feature and even dropped the price.
These companies know the metrics of who's on their systems and what they play now especially being connected to the net.

These newer systems though should be able to do BC from this gen going forward as they are basically in the same x86 architecture.
Until they change that it should be fairly easy for BC.

As for PSNOW I wouldn't be surprised if they have server farms of PS3's set up and of course a few Ps4 servers now that PS4 games are incoming.
The cell chip itself excels at being set up in a server farm. Kinda why the military was in love with it.

But all in all if you are that worried about BC, just keep your old system.
If BC is included in a new system that's cool and all (for those that crave it) but like I said as long as it doesn't add to the cost of the system.

If Backwards Compatibility is such a waste of time why is Sony spending so much money on PSNOW ? Sony should eat their words & shut that service down if its such a waste of time

BC is overstated imo. If MS has been completely focused on Next gen game experiences from the beginning of this Gen, BC wouldn't be put front & center so much.

How many people actually use it? Personally I'd rather go by the disc for the Last Gen Game im interested in, but mostly Im not all that intetested in revisiting last Gen, I want to play the latest & greatest gaming has to offer this Gen.

As a PC gamer first and foremost I really struggle to understand how anyone could not want backwards compatibility. I know PC gamers are different when it comes to old games. We tend to stick to classics in a way that is not seen on consoles (World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Counter Strike all tend to have more players than new releases for example) but what do you do when you want to play KOTOR through for the 10th time. I'm imagining having to dust out the computer I played it on first and that doesn't cut it for me.

I'm just glad I only buy exclusives on consoles.

Now for me i have so many different system and I said I'll keep this one because but in reality now that the xbox have bc I don't have to have all of these different systems sitting in my closet I think it was a good idea to have bc for free I paid for the game why should I have to buy it again and I still play my 360 games even today

Sony needs to adjust their software to do what Microsoft did with Xbox One for future consoles. Microsoft won't have any BC issues going forward and will likely soon announce OXbox support. With the change in the business model it will be hard to simply add the previous generations hardware. Microsoft's complicated OS will prove an asset from here out. Especially with dynamic resolution making revisiting classics far less painful and actually giving you something to look forward to. No more waiting on a remaster for that shiny new console. Your old copy of a game is also hour remaster. And the developer appreciates that it could make you hold onto that game allowing them to sell a new copy to someone else instead of GameStop stepping in.

If Backwards compatibility wasn't worth it, Sony wouldn't be reselling PS2 games on PS4, they wouldn't have invested in PS Now and this generation wouldn't have started with dozens of HD remasters. The Truth of the matter is that Sony doesn't see people replaying their old games on their shelve as being a worthwhile investment when they could just resell all of them.

Honestly you'd have to be nuts to not wan't a console that offer's both great new exclusives and a rich back catalogue and really there is little reason you can't have both other than mismanagement (Which funnily enough Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all seem to be demonstrating).

Some of us want PS2 back compatibility just for old reminisce about games at least give us PS2 or remaster more PS2 games even a wrapper to let them run is enough

I know I never use it. I had the fat PS3 and never went back to play ps2 games. Just wasn't Interested. I buy new gen consoles to play new gen games

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.

$100 game incoming, or the most likely scenario is they will just follow Nintendo going for $80 for the base game

Can't believe anyone thinks it'll be over 70. They want as many people on it as they can to sell shark cards. The only way that happens is if they have a $100 deluxe edition with 3 days early access. Which would probably be smart for them because it'd fly off the shelves
