Why everyone should own a Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is a stunning piece of hardware. Every game should be a Switch game and here is why.

«If you already own a PS4, Xbox One or PC it definitely is worth considering a Nintendo Switch as a second system».

In other words if you have all the consoles and PC then buy the Switch?

Neonridr3273d ago

I wouldn't go that far. The Switch is fine as a standalone console if you like playing on the go or don't always have access to the TV. That being said, it's hard to honestly recommend someone to only own one gaming platform nowadays with so much good content being available on PC, XB1, PS4 and Switch. So the Switch goes well with any of the other platforms. I would honestly recommend PS4 and Switch as a great 1-2 combo.

Dojan1233272d ago

Agree. PS4 and the Switch together will handle most AAA exclusives out there today or coming in the next 12 months. Having a decent PC is also a nice combo with the Switch for third party games and crazy Indy games.

JLynn9433272d ago

I've got both PS4 and Switch, and they split my gaming time pretty much equally right now. I definitely recommend the pairing as well.

porkChop3273d ago

No. They're saying that if you have a primary system already, the Switch makes a pretty great second system. They're saying if you own one of those systems, not all of them lol.

PigPen3272d ago

I disagree with that. The Switch is my primary console.

porkChop3272d ago

@PigPen

That's fine, lol. I'm not the one saying that, the author is.

rainslacker3271d ago

So how does that relate to the headline that "everyone" should get a switch. It seems the article is saying that "everyone that has a primary console", which is a completely different thing than the original headline premise.

I do agree, it could indeed make a great second console, but I've thought that of Nintendo consoles for a couple decades now. But I also know that having a Nintendo console as a second console wouldn't be something that would be for everyone, nor would I recommend it for everyone since I know some people wouldn't get much use out of it, nor find it worthwhile depending on their gaming habits or types of games they enjoy.

CorndogBurglar3272d ago

How did you manage to copy the quote into your post and still misunderstand what it says? Lol

Kosic3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

Its something I want as I own the rest. But lack of games is really dampering my lust for owning a switch. I do not want a Wii u 2.0 come next year or the year after. Nintendo aren't worth my time if it comes to that. Burnt once, not going to risk it twice.

Neonridr3272d ago

lack of games. Because the PS4 was flooded with first party games 2.5 months into its cycle right? Pretty sure we were all playing remastered PS3 games on on PS4 the first holiday season.

The 10th Rider3272d ago

Eh, it's first year lineup already blows the Wii U's out of the water.

Zelda at launch was amazing. Snipperclips is a great game to play with friends. It's easy to pick up to, so even to play with someone who doesn't game much.

Arms is previewing pretty dang well. The biggest concern looks to be content, but they said they're doing regular updates for free, like they did with Splatoon.

Splatoon 2 hits a month after that. It's one of the most successful new first-party IPs out there. The second one looks to improve upon the original.

Fire Emblem Warriors looks alright. I'm sure it will be good, but Warriors games are rarely "great". It's still something.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle looks . . . Interesting. I guess we'll find out how that is.

Super Mario Odyssey will likely be a 95+ on Metacritic, going by the series' history.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looks pretty dang awesome. It looks to be a huge step forwards after the sideways step of Xenoblade X.

It's like if the Wii U got Xenoblade Chronicles X, Super Mario 3D World, Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Nintendoland, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Pokken Tournament, and Breath of the Wild all in the first year . . . And that's not even counting anything unannounced or any titles for the first 3 months of next year.

rainslacker3271d ago

There are some decent games on it already. Although I can understand why one may want to wait it out for more.

Guess it depends on what kind of games you like though.

XStation4pio_Pro3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

I own a PS4 pro an xb1s and now the switch. I kind of disagree. It's fun but if you own another console, I don't know that it's worth having.... at least not now. Most of the indie games are already on Xbox and PS4 and they run better on those systems. Zelda is great but once you beat that it's Mario kart. That's fun for a bit but it's a party game more than anything. I'm kinda already getting bored with the switch and I've only had it for less than a month.

Also as a console it's not even comparable to full blown consoles in terms of graphics, features, software, I/O etc. definitely not a media machine. No hdr, no hard drive, no alt audio outputs etc.. just one hdmi port.

it's fun, but not a must have imo - not unless you're a diehard Nintendo fan but even then there isn't much 1st party stuff out yet. There definitely isn't going to be the support of popular multiplatform games, I'm positive on that. Maybe some "mobile-like" spin off games (like ea FIFA) of those IP but after using mine, I'm confident it can't run stuff like the PS4/Xbox one. It's closer to an iPad.

Kosic3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

Your views is exactly what I'm worried about. I don't want a switch just for Nintendo games, I want a switch for choice of "do I want X title for solo player for the ps4 on the tv, or on a small screen on the go with the switch."

My Wii U barely got used, only a small handful of titles were purchased on the system. If it had more 3rd party titles I would've picked them up on the Wii U over the ps4, just so I can play them in the dark while in bed.

People above are defending that Nintendo and their 1st party studios are supporting the console. That's great and all, but when these games that have been in developed for years get released. Are we then waiting years for the next titles to release? Who is going to give out the filler content other than indie games that have been our for many years?

rainslacker3271d ago

I'm looking at it mainly as a primary portable console. However, at the present time, the Vita still gets more of the kind of software I tend to like to play on the go. Switch has a couple games which I'd like to have on a portable, but most of it's bigger games I think I prefer playing on a home console.

I just couldn't bring myself to get one day one. This and the Wii were the only Nintendo consoles I didn't buy day one, but this time, it's more because I can't justify it, and the one big game which might have compelled me, I just brought on the WiiU instead. I'm thinking maybe the end of the year I'll dive in. Might start dropping hints to my wife for my bday or Xmas, then if it all goes south, no big loss on my wallet.:)

TheFirstClassic3272d ago

"PS4, Xbox One, OR PC"

"second system"

How do you have those agrees?

Aceman183272d ago

They give me a firm release date for fire emblem and Xenoblade 2 I'll happy purchase the system until then i can wait.

XanderZane3271d ago

Maybe in a year or so it will be worth it. Right now, it's not worth it to me. Especially with the Scorpio just around the corner. Right now XB1 & PS4 is all I really need. Can always play my 3DS XL or Wii U if I need some Nintendo games to play. Got plenty of them.

Krysis3271d ago

My switch is getting much more playtime ATM than my other consoles. I love it

badz1493272d ago

"Every game should be a Switch game and here is why."

let me tell you why not instead. it's a weak ass system and downgrading all games just to be played on it is not the way to go for developers!

LOGICWINS3272d ago

The Switch is primarily a JRPG machine. JRPG devs don't focus on making their games look like Uncharted, they focus on gameplay, story, characters, replay value etc. These games will be right at home on the Switch.

Not saying you're one of these people, but don't you find it ironic that a lot of the same people who criticize the Switch for being a "weak console" will say Persona 5 (a game with last gen visuals) is GOTY? They're countering their own argument.

Pokemon is the most popular gaming franchise on the market and it was on the "weak ass" DS and 3DS. Please, remove yourself from this bubble you live in. Not everyone wants (or needs) that much power to enjoy their games.

WeAreLegion3272d ago

That power isn't just to make things look pretty. It's for physics, draw distance, and frame rate, as well. You know...things that help immerse you in a game. Why is it a crime that games both look good and play well? Horizon is tons of fun. So is Uncharted, for that matter. Nier: Automata obviously is, too. Developers shouldn't have to nerf their games to release on systems a full generation of power below the target release system. That's all he's saying. You wouldn't want Nintendo making every game for the 3DS, then porting it to the Switch. Arms wouldn't look nearly as good.

badz1493272d ago

"The Switch is primarily a JRPG machine."

do you know what is the real JRPG machine at the moment? the PS4 and Vita.

Bronxs153272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

You're right about not everyone needing or wanting that much power (Project Scorpio for example). But for me at least visual splendour and grandeur make up a big part of my movie watching and video gaming experience.

It's why I won't watch bad quality bootleg movies for example. It's also why I researched tvs and picture quality before purchasing a tv. What's the point of having an amazing 55" 4k OLED tv if my movies and video games are not going to take advantage of all those pixels and resolution to deliver some amazing eye candy and quality graphics. This is one of the reasons why I'm excited for Scorpio at least.

Great visuals can lend it self to great story telling too. Make characters more lifelike more believable. Not just graphical fidelity I'm thinking how amazed I was playin heavy rain and seeing pores on the characters skin. But great animation and AI also use that extra power. It all helps to captivate you and draw you into the world your playing. Not all games (think Tetris) need this but many story driven games benefit from this. I like being captivates by the video game worlds I visit.

Krysis3271d ago (Edited 3271d ago )

Man you can't argue with the ponies or the xbots, they are stubborn as mules and have fanboy blinders. The switch is great as are the other consoles and the guy in this thread that mentioned the Vita, that's a poor excuse for an unsupported handheld

rainslacker3271d ago

I wouldn't say it's a JRPG machine right now. If it is, then a lot of people diving in expecting more are going to be sorely disappointed. Just look at how the Vita went when it became a JRPG machine. 3DS is more a JRPG machine than Switch is right now, although I assume most development will eventually move over to Switch. I look forward to the JRPG switch machine, and in fact it's my main reason for wanting to eventually get one since I know that's what will happen. But I think it's too soon to call it the JRPG machine, when 3DS, Vita, and PS4 are much more worthy of that title right now.

yet runs all the latest engines just fine...

_-EDMIX-_3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

engines?

ummmmm iphone and androids can run some of those engines.

POWER is not relevant in regards to running an engine as many engines are made to be scaleable for mobile.

POWER is not the only thing required to run those engines bud, that isn't really relevant

3DS could run the RE5 engine as Resident Evil Revelations was made on it, that doesn't mean you saw RE5 and RE6 on 3DS...

The game is more then just the engine.

Running the engine doesn't mean your getting the game.

https://docs.unrealengine.c...
http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

Neonridr3272d ago

@EDMIX - nope, but the Wii U couldn't run Unreal 4.. we saw what that meant for any unreal 4 games.

Switch being able to run the latest engines doesn't mean that they will automatically get the games. But that also means that porting isn't as much of an issue as the Wii U was.

Scalable engines gives developers even less of an excuse when it comes to making games for the Switch.

DanteVFenris6663272d ago

I'd rather play it portable than have better graphics. Graphics don't make a game more enjoyable

JayPi33272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

Actually i'd argue that the 3DS has more JRPG's than Vit or PS4. Bravely Default series, Fire Emblem series, Pokemon, Shin Megami Tensei 4 + Apocolypse, Etrian Odyssey, Mario and Luigi series, and more.

JRPG's have mostly gone to portable platforms, the biggest PS4 JRPGs atm are Persona and Final Fantasy XV, the rest are mostly offered on other platforms.

JayPi33272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

I don't think the Switch is that bad, it's weaker, but the reality is a console is only as good as it's software. The Switch is still and up and coming console so to compare to consoles that have had 3+ years on market isn't really fair.

We can preach about power power power, but if console gamers really wanted power they'd be playing on PC, consoles are about simplicity not power.

And even when, it's up to the devs to optimize their games regardless of the platform, we can whine about the Switch being weak yet Nintendo somehow churns out these games 60 FPS looking beautiful. We make this excuse of "POWER" being the only argument, but at the end of the day, to the publisher it's about money, and to the dev it's about the ease of it. If the switch is easy to port games to or make games on then it will get games, if it's profitable publishers will allows games on it.

They're not bound to petty stuff we as gamers argue about.

JayPi33272d ago

I'd choose the PC over the PS4 anyway honestly, move diversity.

Krysis3271d ago

You get disagreed with even though the PC is the most supported platform in the world. Lol

EddieNX 3272d ago

The pic says it all. What real gamer doesnt want that?

EddieNX 3272d ago

Did I offend someone. Real gamers have a Switch in their collection lol. Deal with it...

AnubisG3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

According to who? You?

Real gamers don't tell others what a real gamer must own. Switch is the weakest system out of all. Why would anyone want it? For the 100th Zelda and the millionth Mario? If that's your thing than go for it and enjoy it. But don't tell people they aren't a real gamer unless they own the Switch. The Switch in my eyes is worthless.

Neonridr3272d ago

@AnubisG - and so your opinion holds just as much weight as Eddie's does. It's not for you, then fine.

100th Zelda? Don't make me laugh. We are lucky if we get more than 1 Zelda game per console. Much like Twilight Princess was developed for the Gamecube and then ported to the Wii I expect to see one Zelda game designed from the ground up for the Switch before we see the next Zelda game show up on the successor. Getting a game every 5 years is not milking anything. Let's be real here, we aren't talking about Activision, EA or Ubisoft who liked to annualize all their franchises. Hell Sony releases sequels of all their popular franchises too, why wouldn't they when they make money?

AnubisG3272d ago

@Neonridr,

There are 32 Zelda games guy, 32.

http://nintendo.wikia.com/w...

If you love Zelda, that is great! Go and enjoy it. I will not call you a none gamer because of it. I'm just saying that it's not my thing and there I'm tired of seeing that franchise but that is my thing. There is not even 1/3 that many AC games from ubisoft. The only problem with AC was that they released one every year.

My only point was that if someone does not care for Zelda or Mario which are the main selling points of basically any Nintendo console other than Metroid, it does not make them any less of a gamer.

EddieNX 3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

😆😆😆 Switch is really quite good, u guys blindly bashing it are going to limit yourselves as gamers. Xenoblade 2, Fire emblem , Mario Oddysey etc etc etc. I pitty the real gamer who doesnt play these. But thats just my opinion and I stand by it. Im excited for the same none Switch games as you are, so what does that make me? A more complete gamer and assured critic with a wider taste in games, simple.

Neonridr3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

@AnubisG - geez, I didn't know Hyrule Warriors, and the Phillips CDi games are being included in actual Legend of Zelda games.. stretching now aren't we?

I guess Mike Tyson's Punch Out should be a Mario game since he is the ref. Or NES Tennis because Mario is the chair umpire too huh?

You seem to be forgetting that Zelda has been around for 30 years.. and you are also talking about Zelda's across like 8 or 9 platforms too.

rainslacker3271d ago

One is not any less of a gamer because they don't find the Switch worth buying. There are all sorts of gamers, and for the most part, I'd call them real if they love games. Where they choose to play those games is irrelevant. Even the toxic fan boys around here I would consider a real gamer if they are actually passionate about the games themselves.

Real gamers care about games, and the hardware is just a means to playing those games. They have their own preferences in the types of games they like, and even the systems they enjoy, as well as what they may be passionate about in gaming, but that is about the only thing that differentiates real gamers from one another.

Anyone who has to say others aren't real gamers because they don't like or don't want what someone else likes is not a real gamer. We call those people blind fan boys.

I've never been able to get into Zelda games, and I've been gaming since pong was new.

DreadGara3272d ago

The Definition of Real gamer ladies and gentlemen.

Common Man, what makes you say that for a just released console which barely have games and cannot match competition in term of graphics/specs...

Did you also made the same statement when the Wii U got released? Every fanboy can do the same thing you just came up with for he's beloved toy...

I'm so curious, what if I don't like the switch as it is for now?

EddieNX 3272d ago

By one later, when more unmissable games inevitably arrive which ill already be waiting for.

vickers5003271d ago

@EddieNX

Sorry bud, but there's nothing exclusive to the switch to make your statement even remotely true in even the most hardcore of gamers eyes. Mario Kart 8 and Breath of the Wild, the only two 'necessary' Switch titles are available on Wii U. As are the indies available for it. The other more niche/casual titles like Arms and that Wipeout clone (don't remember the name) aren't anything to write home about either.

The Switch doesn't even have any media features to compensate for the time that will be spent waiting for new releases to trickle out, which means if you're already done with BoTW or don't want to spend any more time with Mario Kart 8, you have no reason to keep the Switch on.

The Switch won't be a "real" gamers machine until it gets at least 5 EXCLUSIVE good games, and so far it doesn't have even one. Even though it would be way too generous, I'll count Splatoon 2 as the first good exclusive switch game, even though it looks like an expansion pack to the first Splatoon game (we'll see if the campaign is worth a damn, that'll be the thing that makes splatoon 2 more than a splatoon 1 remaster). Then Mario Odyssey will come. The others have pretty vague release dates, if they have them at all, so we'll wait on those, but the point is, they're not here, so you can't yet use them as ammo for your arguments as to why "real" gamers need a switch. Eventually they will, yeah, but now? Absolutely f*cking not.

Yea it makes a great secondary system, but if you have no console don't get it over the PS4 or Xbone... that's what I got from this.

CorndogBurglar3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

I think thats fair. Would anyone really buy this without owning a PS4 or Xbone? I want a Switch, but no way in hell would own ONLY a Switch.

jamstorr863272d ago

That's certainly the case at the moment. Story may change in a year when a few more games have landed, but there are some really good games on the other consoles, especially ps4, which would mean if i had to make the choice between only owning one of the three consoles, i would personally choose ps4. However, I am lucky enough to own both ps4 and switch. really enjoying my gaming at the moment

The 10th Rider3272d ago

Because they own a PC. You can still get access to most third party games with a PC. I play PS4 and Xbox One games I'm interested in at friend's houses. In the case of Injustice 2, which I'd love to buy on PC, I'd also have to pay for the online on PS4 or Xbox One. To me it's just not worth paying the extra for the console and the online for a select few games when I'd rather play most third party games on PC.

The 10th Rider3272d ago

All the salty people disagreeing.

I agree with CorndogBurglar that Switch wouldn't be the ONLY thing to own. However he excluded PC and that's unfair. PC, PS4, or XBOX One and a Switch is a great way to go this gen. As I said there's a few games not on PC that I'd enjoy playing, but I can play them at a friend's house and then I don't have to pay for another console and online.

PigPen3272d ago

Well the Switch is the only console I own and I am happy with it.

richyque3272d ago

Some people can only support a console and a library of games for it, so that leaves switch dead in the water because nintendo only has cartoon based kiddie games.
