What’s Next for Nintendo?

What can Nintendo do in 2018 to keep the Switch hype alive? A lot, actually!

Nintendo needs to get the support that PS Vita had in terms of JRPGS (and Japanese games in general), and needs to get the third party support that the 3DS has (so they need to kill the 3DS). IMO, focusing on home console games is a mistake, because there is no way the Switch will be able to run any (most) of them. Nintendo says the Switch it's a home console ONLY because they don't want to kill the 3DS, but they must do it!

"IMO, focusing on home console games is a mistake, because there is no way the Switch will be able to run any (most) of them"

Well yes, but you are saying this from a focus on 3rd party. They simply won't focus on it, cause like you stated "no way the Switch will be able to run any"

Doesn't stop Nintendo from making their own.

Look, they can have Zelda in 3D looking just like the Wii U version, thus they can also have a top down Zelda too.

That is developer dependent. Look at Lost Sphere, its on PS4, Switch and PC, but clearly its also likely default Switch or I Am Setsuna.

Switch will likely get the support that PS Vita had as it is still a portable.

"Nintendo says the Switch it's a home console ONLY because they don't want to kill the 3DS"

Agreed. (Glad I'm not the only one that sees this)

I think they will eventually have Switch replace 3DS as I think they are just saying that as their teams transition to Switch. (I hope so anyway)

The 3DS has a lot of support from third parties, but of course they are not making Assassin's Creed games, nor Call of Duty. They are making games to take advantage of 3DS specs and features, and Nintendo is not trying to cram a full Call of Duty on the 3DS. The problem is, Nintendo will want to cram a Call of Duty on the Switch, even if it looks like a PS2 game. That is a huge mistake. Nintendo should focus on games that are possible on the Switch and will benefit from it. Just look at Dragon Quest XI! The game on the Switch NEEDS to be a 3DS port and NOT the PS4 port. The Switch will benefit much more from a 3DS port that looks so much better, than a PS4 port that looks so much worse. Also, people may want to double dip and buy both versions, since even though they are the same game, they are different experiences. If the Switch gets a PS4 port, people that want the game, may prefer the PS4 version, since it looks better, and won't compromise performance and/or features.

@Colo- ". The problem is, Nintendo will want to cram a Call of Duty on the Switch, even if it looks like a PS2 game. That is a huge mistake. "

Well like I stated before, that up to 3rd party, not Nintendo. If Nintendo feels the power of the Switch makes sense for them, how 3rd party approach it is their business.

This is where I side with Nintendo. Its their platform, they made it to max out their content.
Look at Breath Of The Wild.

In my opinion, that is good enough for them, legit for 5 plus years.

So Nintendo is focusing on games that are possible on the Switch, they are not Activision.

"The game on the Switch NEEDS to be a 3DS port and NOT the PS4 port"

Well sure, but that is up to Square, not Nintendo.

In Nintendo's defense, they don't control what those 3rd party put on their system that much, its still up to Square, Activision etc. I don't think Nintendo wants 3rd party support from those AAA, I think they are ok with it, but they expect support like they saw from 3DS, DS etc.

I think its a good choice to be honest.

The versions that other publishers choose just isn't Nintendo's issue. I think they are fine knowing they have a lessor system in terms of specs, but a portable in terms of more market control. I think its a respectable trade off. Look at 3DS, 70 million units is still money, didn't need to be the power of the PS3 to get that. Switch will be fine. Need not worry about other publishers porting titles. That really isn't up to Nintendo.

@colonel - I kind of disagree,but also agree.

The kinds of JRPGs the Vita had is it's main problem. Way too many of those hyperdimensionneptunia type games with all female cast in short skirts and huge boobs with sqeaky voices.

^ There are like 40 of those and like 6 normal/traditional JRPGs.

They need more games like Dragon Quest & Suikoden and stuff like that and less of the super weeb stuff. THAT was the vitas largest problem...the lack of variety.

As long as Switch maintains a 3DS level of game variety it will be ok.

"IMO, focusing on home console games is a mistake, because there is no way the Switch will be able to run any (most) of them."
There are plenty of AAA third party games that could be made to run on Switch, if third parties wanted to do it.
Keep in mind that AAA is determined by budget and quality development, not by how much it taxes the tech it's running on. Stuff like a new Tales Of title, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, or a new Mana title, or BG&E2, amongst many other possibilities.
Just because it won't get a few games like ME Andromeda doesn't mean it can't, let alone won't, get good games from third parties.
This isn't the Wii U, with horrible advertisement while all of its best games' release dates get too closely crammed together and low market demand.
The Switch is doing better, and lots of third parties, that weren't interested in the Wii U before, are making games for the Switch now.

All I'm saying is, don't count it out so early into its life when there are so many positive signs.

"Stuff like a new Tales Of title, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, or a new Mana title, or BG&E2, amongst many other possibilities."
Yeah, that´s the stuff I want for the Switch, and for it to have the variety the 3DS has. That's the best way to go for the Switch. It's just that Nintendo might be so focused on it to be a home console, that might do deals with third parties that won't benefit the console at all. Nintendo will obvously make great games, but it needs third party games too, and I hope they'll be more like the games for 3DS, than the games for PS4.

My job never flops ;)
nintendo after switch, however, yes

They just need to keep releasing top games for the system, that should be enough to keep them selling units because it the best console design out there.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle40d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
