Has Ubisoft Gone Too Far with Far Cry 5?

Another Far Cry game, another controversy. With the recent unveiling of the key art for Far Cry 5, Ubisoft has shaken things up with an image depicting what appears to be a group of militant religious zealots gathered around a table draped with an altered American flag.

The Gizmo Life discusses some of the uneasiness surrounding Far Cry 5 as well as past releases that have received the same type of reception from gamers and non-gamers alike.

Just let them make what they want.... It's there's .... Games influenced by stupid articles are something to look forward.to .... NOT

Bottom line people are over reacting because of what the issues entails. When we showing the content like far cry three with its religious content it's not directly to a major demographic but now it is and people "feel some type of way". But they always been willing to make games that are true to what they believe in and give us that dynamic experience. Let's wait and see. I'm sure it will be an amazing game.

If anything I hope they go further with this game. Games are art and developers have every right to make games with societal commentary, the same way movies and music can contain social and political commentary. What needs to stop is games being made to fit someone else's agenda. Be that agenda, one that promotes positive growth or negative growth. An agenda can be about pushing LGBT issues, racial issues, or it can be about pushing a certain character type because publishers believe it sells well (aka the white male, bald guy character). The only thing that publishers should be doing is allowing developers to make the games they believe in. If that is a game that happens to have gay characters in it, like oh say The Last of Us, then so be it.

Rather than forcing developers to make games with certain agendas in it, developers should be free to make games that they believe in. They should be free to make the best possible game they can make. If that game includes social commentary, then so be it. Far Cry 5 looks like it will have social and political commentary and if that is the game the developers want to make then so be it.

In my opinion, Ubisoft are playing it safe. Besides, it is just a video game and not real life.

The story, all names, characters, and incidents portrayed in this production are fictitious. No identification with actual persons (living or deceased), places, buildings, and products is intended or should be inferred.

Palitera3290d ago

Sometimes it is culture and must be treated very seriously. But when it its convenient, nah, it is just a toy, "don't worry, it is just a game".

Games are influential and have a great potential to raise awareness and bring discussions to the table. Now, the problem here is not the game by far, but the tabboo around religion, even these fake religions popping left and right.

And this is something very worthy of being addressed. Bold move from Ubisoft to bring these issues into light. In the form of a fun game, yes, but it is much better than the law lenience and the general silence about it everywhere else.

SaveFerris3290d ago

Fair enough. Books and movies have done this and video games should be no different. This War of Mine, 1979 Revolution, and Papers, please are such games that can raise awareness of their subject matter among gamers, and that is definitely a good thing.

What a load of crap!, games Have a great potential to raise awarness and bring discussion to what table?! N4G comments section?!
Nobody gives a crap what issues ect games bring up but other gamers, we live in a vacuum, games rarely get attention because of the "improtant" issues they may include in their storylines, society at large doesnt give a fuck whats going on in games unless its a rape scene or to do with children and even then its only the ratings board and they dont look at nor care about context.

^ I could swear we are part of the society.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing31d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9231d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit31d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing31d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9231d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
