Sony’s Weirdest Hardware Decisions

"A few interesting bits of PlayStation history have been unearthed including photographs of the “Nintendo PlayStation” a while back. This was a CD and cartridge based console Sony was developing with Nintendo and the prototype for what would eventually become the original PlayStation. I decided to take a look at a few other relics of Sony history, some that came out, and one that (thankfully) didn’t." -- PlayStation Enthusiast

I know it took a lot of flack, but I'm willing to bet that boomerang controller wouldn't have been bad at all. I used to have a similar PC controller and it was all sorts of comfortable.

Brave_Losers_Unite3294d ago

Yeah I think it would have been pretty good. Sony shouldnt have listened to critics.

UltraNova3294d ago (Edited 3294d ago )

Damn right. Plus you could use it as a weapon if you ever needed one while playing a game..say on a burglar or the annoying neighbor...swoop > drop him/her unconscious > swoop > the controller returns> continue where you left off.

Fishy Fingers3294d ago

Really? It looked all kinds of awful and obviously didn't receive good feedback/testing or they wouldn't of reverted to the DS and thank god they did.

They had an third party ps1 controller very similar to the boomerang design, and it is/was my favorite controller ever.
It allowed the player to adjust to the size of their hands making it compatible to all gamers.
I really wish it would have made it to the market.

People mocked the look of it, but who's to say it isn't better than what we have now?

Anyhow, wasn't this just some concept piece by Sony? It wasn't actually meant to replace the DS. It was done for some sort of marketing thing.

potedude3294d ago

I used to use PS TV and thought it was awesome. Also played on Xperia Play, that thing was great - pity they didn't continue with the idea as phone gaming is really limited by the touchscreen.

I still use my PSTV. Some of the Vita games I prefer to play on the big screen. Some are great on the go. PSTV has a spot on my receivers input selector.

Rimeskeem3294d ago

I honestly want to know how the boomerang controller felt.

Wonderbook that was the one product that was never going to sell very well. I loved the PSP Go though.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing24d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit24d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing24d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
