You can literally use almost any Bluetooth controller on a Pi. I used a couple of PS3 Sixaxis controllers i had lying around and they work great!

Still NES games with a NES controller is the best way to play. Same goes for all platforms besides PS, which is pretty much identical between gens, or Xbox which has only improved over the years

Totally agree with you, I was just happy to have the controllers lying around that work, otherwise, I would've had to shell out some money for those Bluetooth 8BitDo controllers since my couch is too far away from my TV.
