IGN: Rygar Hands-on

IGN writes: "You'd be forgiven for assuming the Wii port of Rygar was quietly cancelled. It's been a while since Tecmo has talked about it and we'd only seen a 30 second video of it in action at last year's Tokyo Game Show. But Rygar is still here, it's coming this December, and we've played it -- and came away impressed. This is essentially the same game that arrived on the PlayStation 2 back in 2002 (God, has it been that long?) with some light motion controls added and general gameplay tweaks. Tecmo likes to think of this version of Rygar as similar to what it did with Ninja Gaiden Black -- basically, this is meant to be the definitive version of the game.

First, some general info for those that missed this action adventure the first time around. Set in Greco-Roman mythology, the third-person game definitely gives off a God of War vibe (although it arrived three years before Kratos' first adventure). The Rygar franchise began in arcades in 1985 as an action affair, and appeared on the NES a year later with more of an adventure feel. The 3D PS2 game featured a mix of action and adventure, although Tecmo feels it may have leaned towards adventure a little too much. The developers have tried to keep up the pace and inject more combat into the Wii game."

Rygar Is A Non-Linear 8-Bit Masterpiece

Rygar, which is now available for Nintendo Switch Online, did a lot of things right, particularly when it came to creating an immersive world that felt interconnected.

We need more of this franchise.

Was a pretty cool game back then. And for those that didn't play it, the PS2 game was a pretty cool update of the franchise. Still got that one.

Could see a 2D update made like Bionic Commando got from Capcom.

This.
I have Bionic Commando Rearmed on both PSN and Steam. Would be nice to see Rygar get the same treatment. Or even like the recent Strider reboot.

I remember renting this and finishing it in one day. Thoroughly engrossing. Would like to see a follow up to this.

I rented this and was glued to it until I beat it. This was the first metroidvania type game but unfortunately was forgotten. I'm glad someone's giving it the attention it deserves.

hey Bangoskank, yes, I loved this and was so happy to play through it again. Thanks for checking it out

Beating that game when I was like 10 remains one of my greatest gaming accomplishments.

tieryas4718d ago

ha ha, yeah, I remember beating it very fondly too. It was so tough because you had to do it in one sitting!

Well it wasn't forgotten, in 2002 they made a 3D PS2 Rygar: The Legendary Adventure. I owned this original one though, and it was a very cool metroidvania game. It was weird, how it'd be a top-down game in certain areas, then go to the sidescrolling in others. The music was always very memorable. They need to make another sequel, but in this same metroidvania style. If I remember correctly the PS2 game was just level based. This was a great game overall.

Rygar for the ps2 wasn't very good. I remember getting very excited because I loved the nes game but the ps2 game didn't come close to meeting my lofty expectations. Actually, I was so disappointed that I played it for about 10 minutes and put it down for good. I meant that the nes game was forgotten, not the franchise. It really isn't regarded as the classic it should have been. I like to make believe rygar ps2 never existed.
