Switch’s ‘Artificial Demand’ Claims Aren’t Just False, They’re Crazy

— Nintendo Enthusiast:

Despite Nintendo’s best efforts, Switch systems are still hard to come by in retailers all over the world. This has led to some folks accusing the company of deliberately constraining supply in order to make it seem like the system is selling better than it actually is. Not only is this accusation false, it’s just plain crazy talk.

It's crazy talk, because Nintendo isn't smart enough to be that cunning to pull a conspiracy of this magnitude off. Remember, these are the same folks that discontinued the NES Classic even though it was still WELL in demand.

prankster1013300d ago

Nintendo is like the dumbest mofo since the death of Yamauchi... Man, you knew he was the original mother-brain that actually got $hit done and commanded a whole heap of respect in the process.

Nintendo right now, with all their dumb fans, are nothing but a sad joke and a blot on the industry.

Aquietguy3300d ago

@ JackTheLiz

Maybe they ended the NES Classic to help with Switch production. Wouldn't make sense to just end production.

JackTheLiz3300d ago

That still makes no sense.

-Gespenst-3300d ago

Maybe they did that to make you THINK that they're too dumb to do manipulative things.

The whole point of the NES Classic was to cancel it and make Nintendo look dumb and clueless so that it could get away with constraining supplies of the Switch to create the appearance of huge demand, i.e. people would think they were too clueless to do something so devilish.

The NES Classic was never meant to be a product in its own right, it was always totally part of the strategy for the Switch. It was all about controlling people's perceptions of Nintendo as a company.

...but maybe not.

C_Ali883300d ago

HOW THE EFF CAN YOU CANCEL SOMETHING THAT WAS A LIMITED ITEM FROM THE OUTSET???????

DO PEOPLE NOT HAVE BRAINS ON N4G??

This constant misunderstanding of the market yet being so condescendingly opinionated is ******* DISGUSTING.

You can't create artificial demand on close to 3 million units sold in ONE month or have piss poor supply. You can blame their production estimates but not their SUPPLY.

Not you -Gespenst-... LOL

RANT end...

An opinion piece from a site called Nintendo Enthusiast. As they saying goes, "consider the source".

wonderfulmonkeyman3301d ago

The source has no reason to lie about this, though, and the facts, credible and confirmed true, are out there on the table supporting the article.
Disregarding facts because someone doesn't like the name of the source makes no sense.

AKR3301d ago

So do you have the same argument against any pro-Sony sites that talk about the PS4? I wonder...

I just googled it. Switch sold 2.7Million in March alone! That is not Nintendo enthusiast. http://www.ibtimes.com/nint...
I keep seeing people say, "my Target, Best Buy, etc has them...Really??? I live in So Cali, and went to 3 targets, and was told they cant keep them in stock, period. I have looked every week since launch, anytime I was at a Target, Walmart, Best Buy. Not once have I seen one, BUT I do see people walking to the Switch display to buy one, but in the display case they had 0. That happens allot. I also check websites, and that is just a joke. Amazon has them for around $400-$500. Other websites just never have them.

I am not even going to buy one till fall, and I doubt they will be any easier to find then! When the Holidays come, do not see the demand being any less. I think its going to stay sold out this year.

3-4-53300d ago

This site has bashed Nintendo as much as any other I've seen...they might bash them the worst....I think the name is a name only as they 50% of the time come across as Nintendo haters.

This is one of the few times I've actually seen them defend Nintendo in the past couple months.

They usually whine about them.

* Nintendo shipped more units than they ever have with any system ever.

How is that not enough ?

They shipped almostas many Switch's in 28 days(2.7 million), than Microsoft sold XB1's in it's first 6 months. (3.2 million)
Sony was at about 4 million shipped, but there was higher initial demand.

* If Nintendo shipped them any faster there would be huge quality control issues that you same people would then complain about.

You think you are making Nintendo look bad, but it is you who looks bad. When you obviously just hate to hate.....you lose credibility.

* BTW I have a PC,XB1,Wii U,Switch,PS4,Vita,PSP, and other past gaming systems.....so NO I'm not a blind Nintendo fanboy.

I play games on all consoles.

C_Ali883300d ago

Thank you, My comment history is loaded with arguments with commenters with blind hatred and no fact.

It's tedious.

King Nezz3301d ago

If the reports are true that Nintendo made a shipment by plane, and not by boat, considering the cost, one would be dumb to think they are holding units. Nintendo: "Let's hold back and hold stock to create demand. And after there is demand, let's ship them quickly by plane and pay a huge increase in shipping costs". Doesn't sound like a good and smart business move.

ZombieGamerMan3301d ago

You would reasonably think that and I too would reasonable think that as well if it was for the fact that Nintendo has been doing this with Amibos and the NES classic

King Nezz3301d ago

Amiibos are one thing. But a console, the one coming after the failure that is the Wii U? That would be playing with fire. If the shortage is artificial, they better know what they are doing.

3300d ago
davand1143300d ago

Actually if you read the information and considered the number of consoles they shipped the first month, it isn't reasonable.

Pookandpie3301d ago

I like that you're among the few reasonable people on this page who don't just attack the domain from whence the argument came, and put forth a logical conclusion as to why it's extremely stupid to create artificial demand but then pay significantly higher shipping costs to ship by air freight.

rainslacker3300d ago (Edited 3300d ago )

Exactly how much of an increase in shipping costs is there to do air freight? How much per unit extra did it cost to go to such great lengths? A single shipping container can hold about 1/3 of what a freight plane can. how many Switches could they actually ship by going air freight? Given the numbers, and reported shortages, the answer is not nearly enough to make a difference.

More importantly, why wouldn't Nintendo have the replacement shipments already planned to be where they needed to be, since so far, they haven't greatly outsold their initial projections based on their initial shipments of 2 million in the first month. If Nintendo thought they would sell 2 million in the first month, why wouldn't they have at least that many in the supply chain ready for distributors before they sold an additional 700K?

Sorry, but having to air freight it seems like a marketing ploy. Sea shipping takes about a week or less if you have things planned right. They saved 4-5 days by shipping by plane and paid a super huge extra sum for it? Sure, seems legit.

davand1143300d ago

It's about $45 per unit.

C_Ali883300d ago (Edited 3300d ago )

45$ a unit on 2 million units, Nintendo is eating the expense at millions of dollars to themselves. That could have been profit but instead to meet demand they go above and beyond.

Yet N4G can't get behind a logical thought if you paid them.

rainslacker3299d ago (Edited 3299d ago )

$45 a unit? They'd be better off using UPS or fedex and shipping each one individually or just buying an international plane ticket and packing the person's bags with as many switches as possible. $45 a unit my ass. Maybe $45 for a case of however many units come in a case. I've shipped consoles heavier and bigger than the Switch overseas using 2-3 day shipping, and it cost less than $45. China has some stupid shipping agreements with the US, where it's super cheap to ship stuff through regular mail to the states, so why would they freight them at $45 a piece?

If Nintendo stated $45 a unit, then I know they're BS'ing. If you guys actually believe that BS, then it explains a lot on your ability to use any sort of critical thinking skills.

Prince_TFK3300d ago (Edited 3300d ago )

Well thought-out logic does not apply here on n4g:
- PSVR not in stock? Sold out!!!!
- Switch not in stock? Nintendo nerf the stock!!!! They are morons!!!!

Lol the double standard here is just too much, espcially from these ps fanboys.

C_Ali883300d ago

LOL and tell me how VR is moving these days? About 900,000 LTD?? lol and yet some of you have the audacity to talk about "Artificial Demand" ???

Skankinruby3301d ago

Lol its not crazy talk, it's obvious. Anyone who doesn't see this nonsense for the publicity stunt that it is is very naive. Nes classic being discontinued after the insane demand it had is absolute nonsense. They're all manipulative moves to put Nintendo back as a heavy contender but it's so obvious what they're doing. I'm telling you now, classic nes will be released again with a higher price tag, they'll probably keep the switch out of production for awhile for the same reason.

Lockdown5553301d ago

Wow. Just wow. Learn how business works. You can keep trying to play the ignorant card all you want but if the sales increase to match the high amount of increased production Nintendo has planned on having this year people will no longer be able to claim there is fake demand. Fake demand doesn't produce sales as high as they are.

MrFisher213301d ago

This is why I only by Nintendo products after I know Homebrew can be used on it. Loving my Wii U now. Especially with the Ram Hack. And the Switch is very close. Just not enough games out yet to justify the price even when Homebrew is loaded. Coming from someone who grew up with a NES as a kid and reading Nintendo Power. This company has gone off track. And the fan base is very defensive. Didn't the Switch come out as a Home Console 1st. Portable secondary? And it also kicks of the next gen of consoles? Smh

wonderfulmonkeyman3301d ago

Only an idiot would think Nintendo would lie about spending that much on a mere publicity stunt.
It's only "obvious" if the reader has a ridiculous bias against the company.
There's no artificial demand on the Switch, and the alternate-console-fanboys need to stop feeling so threatened over the idea of the Switch succeeding.

davand1143300d ago (Edited 3300d ago )

This is one of the dumbest fucking comments ever on this site. Yes a company that wants to make money will decide not to manufacture their brand new console that they just released in order to make money. That's just stupid. How would a company make money if they don't sell their product?

C_Ali883300d ago

CLASSIC NES WAS A LIMITED ITEM YOU DOPE!

Jesus Christ....Stupidity is abundant.

How come I hear nobody ripping Sony about that Ps1 edition Ps4 that were so limited barely anybody got one?

Did Sony discontinue those too?

At least Nintendo went out of there way to produce the thing for months AFTER, 3 million units and yet you can't separate the reality from fantasy. The reality is that the system was probably intended for hundreds of thousands NOT millions.

Be glad they made 3 million or just shut up. Tired of hearing this BS.

dveio16d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
