Should Sony Release a PS1 Mini?

With last week’s news that Nintendo was purportedly planning on releasing a SNES Mini later this year, and given how fantastic the NES Mini was received by fans, we got to thinking: should Sony jump on the bandwagon and release a PS1 Mini?

Nope, but a full BC PS3 mini would be cool, or at the very least a PS2 BC mini.

i don't think PS1 games age in the same fashion as NES or SNES games so i think they use your idea or none at all.

Go play MGS1, FF, Castlevania SoTN and try and tell me that again.

MGS1 is one of the best made games of all time and this is coming from someone who played it in 2012

Also any JRPG or turn based slower paced game or 2D side scrolled aged damn well.

They vary a lot more, but some still look fine. Spyro and Crash games for example still look decent and have aged well. Ape Escape and Croc on the other hand havent aged so well, but they are still alright.

A new PS3 model will never happen. The cell is too expensive to make it worth it.

Oh, that PS2 to HDMI adapter is pretty cool and handy. I think I need to pick up one.

Its still not exactly the same as NES Mini with its HDMI. This thing converts the signal to a HDMI output, but the native/original output will always be analog. This is such a new thing for me so I cant say anything about its quality, and neither do I know how well a component cable quality image converts to a HDMI one, but I dont believe that the image quality can match a native digital signal on a modern monitor/TV.

NES Mini outputs at native digital, so you get pretty much a perfect image quality.

Also, I believe the issue with PS3 becoming slimmer, was with NVIDIA not being willing enough to create a smaller RSX chip, therefore also keeping the cost of PS3 super slims pretty high.

I think you're missing the point. Do you really think people bought the NES Classic for a mere 30 games they could easily emulate on a cheaper Raspberry Pi? Ascetics are half of the appeal. As someone who owns two different models of the original PS1 and a PS2 Slim, I'd still be interested in something like this.

yeahokwhatever3341d ago

So the PS2 slim isn't aesthetically pleasing to you? I thought it was one of the best looking consoles of all time, myself.

A slight informational comment about that adapter, if anyone ever happens to stumble on it. A reviewer pointed out that there can be compatibility issues with the adapter due to the display resolution of the PS2, and how your TV handles them. Theres already an issue with PS1 games being played on PS2 via component cables (the 5 color ones). Component gives you the best image quality on PS2, but through those means your TV cannot handle/understand the small 240p resolution of the PS1 games. Some TVs do, but mine for example does not. Even some PS2 games can suffer from this issue.

Now, one reviewer complained about 2 things about this dongle. First, the power cord can prevent vertical standing on some models completely due to the orientation of the micro USB port. Another thing that prevented him from using the dongle, was that while his TV understands 480i and 480p of PS2 through component ports, it does not accept it through its HDMI ports.

So depending on your TV, this adapter might not work at all. It could be fixed on the adapter side, if the adapter upscaled internally to 720p, but that would possibly hike up the price and bloat its size.

Its also interesting to note that PS2 has a very noisy image quality due to cheaper internals that handle the analog signal.

So essentially, if Sony made a PS2 mini, they could prevent compatibility issues with internal scaler, and also up the image quality from the original PS2.

*Havent bought the adapter yet btw, so cant say anything about it.

that particular adapter works fine for me on both 1080p TVs I have(65 panasonic plasma, 32 vizio lcd) I have one for my Wii and one for my PS2. I will say that the construction is a bit weak, my kids somehow separated the plastic case from the guts, I had to put it back together(no biggie) still works fine. For GT4 on PS2, I tried all of the output modes (480i, 480p, 1080i) and they work fine.

The problem is that Sony is defined as much by strong first party exclusives as strong third party exclusives, particularly back in the PS1 era. With how IP has changed hands over the years and original rights holding, it would be a monumental chore to reach the agreements necessary to provide permanent copies of many games even in a digital capacity. This is part of the reason I don't believe an SNES mini is a good idea either. Many of the games people would want to see will never make it into the collection because those that have maintained IP rights prefer high profit means of cashing in on nostalgia, done on their own time to maximize profit margins.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing50d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9250d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit50d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing50d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9250d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
