2017: The 3D Platformer Returns

Phil writes, "The 3D platformer and ode to collect-a-thons like Banjo-Kazooie, Yooka-Laylee, releases today. It's just one of a wide assortment of games in a genre that has taken a bit of a vacation over the past decade or so, the 3D platformer. 2017 brings the genre back and back in a big way with 3D platformers of all styles, straightforward linear adventures, open-world exploration, collect-a-thons, and more. This article touches on some of the more promising 3D platformers launching or have already launched this year."

Return? Are we really forgetting that Ratchet & Clank '16, Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, Sly 4: Thieves in Time, Sonic Lost World, Tearaway, Super Mario 3D World, Knack, Haydee, & Grow Home along with various other 3D platformers I didn't bother writing.

Let's not even try to dishonorably discredit them all and act like the entire genre went extinct and are only returning this year.

FallenAngel19843238d ago

When did this genre ever leave and disappear? We've had plenty of 3D platformers over the years.

I'm sick of journalists discrediting all those awesome games just to hype the ones coming out this year.

Name some good triple a 3D Platformers on PS4 and XB1 that are like Super Mario Odyssey. The genre never left but it's not as good or pushed as it once was. Ratchet & Clank is the only one I can think of that was good but it's more of a shooter than platformer in my opinion.

FallenAngel19843237d ago

Super Mario Odyssey isn't even out. It's still a disservice to ignore all of the quality platformers that were released

RufusvonBalsac3237d ago

More quality and colourful platformers, please. With nice graphics, not those pixel stuff.

CandarianGaming3236d ago

POI was an amazing 3D platformer that was released on steam this year also

Fantastic game. By far my favorite 3D Mario.

repsahj112d ago

I bought the switch 1 Mario odyssey bundle when it came out. Good thing Nintendo didn't charge for the switch 2 upgrade.

Soy111d ago

Most pure fun I had with any Mario game since Super Mario World.

Bit like comparing a truck to a car.

Donkey Kong is an average game. Mario Kart is now neutered and watered down. I'm hoping Metroid is at least above average.

Neonridr167d ago

Donkey Kong had so much more than they showed in the direct. Not to spoil anything but considering people were assuming there'd be like 4 or 5 "worlds" in total, many were shocked to find out just how far the game keeps going.

I'm having a blast with the game myself, but to each their own. MK is a solid entry in the series, is it the best? Debatable. But it's not like it's a bad game at all.

8bitAssassin167d ago

I feel your assessment. The destruction & playability in DK is phenomenal. MK has a ton to unluch and some dope tracks. It's something about both that didn't punch in areas where it needed the most.

Shiro173167d ago

Mario odyssey definitely beats DKB but it's not to say DKB is a bad game at all.

gold_drake111d ago

i wouldnt compare these games at all.

but, having played both, Odyssey is the better game.

nice improvement to the clarity. Really makes everything look less blurry, especially in the distance.

really hope we see more free improvements like this on Switch 1 games.

Jin_Sakai262d ago

First game I played on Switch 2. Much sharper and cleaner image compared to the original.

Cacabunga261d ago

I won’t be able to notice difference unless both versions are side by side

Snookies12262d ago

A lot of games that have no official Switch 2 update already run WAY better just from the hardware itself. It's fantastic getting to play all these games in a much better state. So glad I hardly played any of my Switch collection over the years, lol. This will make experiencing them for the first time so much better.

Levii_92262d ago

A nice resolution upgrade to one of my fav games but i’m still not buying the Switch “2”

darthv72262d ago (Edited 262d ago )

This and Mario/Bowser are ones I will pop in later. I hope other devs offer some patches, like xenon racer on SW1 is 30fps and it really is better at 60.

Goodguy01262d ago (Edited 262d ago )

Great it was 60 frames on switch 1 though. Definitely sacrificed resolution however.

Neonridr262d ago

I mean it targeted 60 on the Switch 1, but it wasn't always solid.

GhostScholar262d ago

I’ll never know why fans let Nintendo get away with not competing graphically and never putting their games on sale.

Chard262d ago

Unfortunately the games are fun. They’ve got us by the balls

GhostScholar262d ago

I’m a fan of their exclusives as well but if the hardware had the same capabilities as the x and ps5 and I could have all the third party stuff plus the Nintendo exclusives it would be my main console

Neonridr261d ago

@GhostScholar - if the Switch 2 had the same capabilities as the X and PS5 it would cost over $1000 and the battery would last for 5 minutes.
