Scorpio Solves Xbox's Hardware Issue, but PlayStation's Software Supremacy Is Poised To Endure

Microsoft brought Xbox once again at the forefront of technology with Scorpio, but now it has a much tougher task ahead: crafting great games.

PlayStation remains ahead for the foreseeable future thanks to their strategy of first and second party titles, though Microsoft has lots of great IPs worth reviving.

Microsoft Game Studios is a shadow of what it was. Phil Spencer needs to deliver instead of cancelling games one after the other.

KaiPow3204d ago

And there needs to be more support for indie developers. Surely Microsoft can get more on their system than just Cuphead.

wheresmymonkey3204d ago

Unlikely to be honest. Nintendo seem to have sucked up most of the big indies for the switch and i have a feeling that's going to be a big part of their strategy going forward.

343_Guilty_Spark3204d ago

Shows what you know. Indie support has been very strong.

ShadowKnight3204d ago

@343
So why are you getting disagrees then? I actually think indie support has been mediocre

NewMonday3204d ago

MS got lost in the social media bubble, fanboys troll about specs but in reality it was all about the games.

freshslicepizza3204d ago

they have made huge strides getting indies but big titles are needed big time. state of decay 2, crackdown 3, and sea of thieves all look very promising but they need a lot more than that. this e3 is put up or shut up time.

aconnellan3204d ago (Edited 3204d ago )

More than just Cuphead?

Microsoft has 212 indie games available on the Xbox One, 91 of which are exclusive.

It's not as many as the PS4, but it's more than "just Cuphead", and I can't believe how many people are blindly agreeing with you (and how many disagrees 343 is getting in spite of being correct)

Source - https://www.finder.com.au/g...

XabiDaChosenOne3204d ago

@moldybread what is it about any of those titles that looks promising? I'm willing to be none of those titles will get anything above a 75 on metacritic.

sonarus3204d ago

I think the Scorpio is great as a high end console. It will offer choice for those who can afford it which is great. It will likely be successful even but it won't all of a sudden result it massive sales. They are quite late at this juncture

Phil shouldn't release games for the sake of releasing games. He needs to invest in new IP, open/acquire another 2 studios and give them the time they need to fully devlop it, hell maybe bring back an old IP like Kameo or Crimson Skies. But none of that is gonna happen over night, meanwhile everyone is gonna moan about them not releasing new exclusives right now. They need to release quality games.

_-EDMIX-_3204d ago

Agreed, they just got worse and worse and worse.

When you look at 360, MS moves show they had no real interest in even making new series.

XB. Halo, Fable, Forza, PGR and many others.
XB 360. Halo, Fable, Forza, PGR (now here is where things get dicey, notice WHO is making the game and WHO owns the IP to said games.

Epic games Gears Of War..., MS didn't own the IP, they didn't not create this game, again they didn't own the IP, didn't own the studio.......

Bioware's Mass Effect, MS didn't own the IP, yet KNEW Mass Effect was going to be a 3 part game, in which they didn't own the IP, didn't own the studio.......

So what it tells me, is MS had no real concept of making ANYTHING NEW GROUND UP BY THEIR TEAMS.

If MS says no to Gears and Mass Effect,

Gears likely gets published by Epic games on many platforms
Mass Effect gets published else where on many platforms etc.

So this alone tells you those games on 360 are by HAPPENSTANCE, MS didn't one day go to them and say they had an idea, MS never owned those IPs in the first place.

MS only bought Gears Of War IP THIS GEN.

So exactly what was MS really planning if they had no issue paying for titles they didn't even own?

This shows they had no real interest in doing what Sony was doing. Buying teams and making new SERIES ground up, 100% owned. MS wanted to have 1 foot in, 1 foot out.

Mass Effect sold 360's, they didn't need to pay the money for the team and the IP, easy money right? Cut corners right?

How much XONE's is Mass Effect selling for MS right now? This shady business needs to end. They need to REALLY invest vs theses once over, risky, lazy deals.

Ryse, Dead Rising, Sunset Overdrive go to show they haven't learned crap and still make risky deals as suppose to invest in house.

Chevalier3204d ago

They also spend $2 billion to buy Minecraft.

Bronxs153204d ago

Nobody wants games upon games if they are not good games. Exercising some quality control isn't necessarily a bad thing. If scalebound looked like it would be a fun game and review well do you think ms would have canceled it? There is obviously more to the story than we're aware of.

Do you think ms goes out there and looks for games like "hey, x developer can you make us a game? we don't want anything too good, if you got a shitty game a solid 4 or 5 out 10 that'll be nice. scalebound was shaping up to get 9s or perfect reviews so we canceled it"

thejigisup3202d ago

I think they will revive some of those cancelled games and reintroduce them for the scorpio. At least thats what im hoping they do. I have been avoiding microsoft consoles since the whole rrod issue that affected so many of my friends. If they knock the scorpio out of the park, start supporting their games properly and bring back some of the cancelled games that i was getting interested in i may end up purchasing one. But, probably wont happen bc microsoft has been disappointing me for the last several years now.

The Scorpio is set to eclipse all competitors in terms of power but Microsoft now need to deliver the first party games.

But yeah if you want the definitive console versions of multiplatform games, Scorpio is the obvious choice.

Alexious3204d ago

True, but how many buy consoles just to get the best looking version of multiplatform games? I'd say that's a niche at best. It's no coincidence that Sony and Nintendo have the best exclusives and now both PlayStation 4 and the Switch are doing great.

UCForce3204d ago

Yup, a powerful hardware without software. It's not gonna help MS.

PFFT3204d ago (Edited 3204d ago )

It will be fine. Im sure they will have alot to show at E3.

-Foxtrot3204d ago

Like having a brand new MP3 and not having any music for it.

Armyntt3204d ago

I believe it's the opposite. I believe the vast majority of gamers only care about the multi's. I've said this in many threads on here. The COD/Madden/Destiny players of the world make up a larger number of gamers than those of us on N4G. Come July if we have visual proof that the Scorpio plays those that much better and at 60fps at all times it'll become the must have.

BlakHavoc3204d ago

Exclusives aren't the reason Sony is on top. The biggest reason are 3rd party games and PS being the definitive place to play these games. Right now the household console for casuals is the PS4. Exclusives play a role, but they aren't the biggest reason why Sony's sold 60 mil units.

Majin-vegeta3204d ago (Edited 3204d ago )

@army except those games will be limited to whatever framerste they are running Online on the OG X1

_-EDMIX-_3204d ago

Agreed. If someone wanted that, PC exist.

WelkinCole3204d ago

@Armyntt.

Nope. Multipltorm gamers like in those specific instance pick the platform their friends are on. That would be the PS4 right now. There will be literally zero people on the Scorpio before launch.

Other than the above. Gamers is go for price over weather they can see a few extra pixels.

Heck game selection would even come before performance of multi-plat games.

Never heard of anyone picking a platform because one mutiplat has better performance than the other.

I have heard about picking which multi-platform version to choose though if they already have mutiple platforms.

Bronxs153204d ago

@-Foxtrot
you mean like having a brand new mp3 player but no music to play on it because you you exclusively listen to one artist and your waiting for that one artist to release news songs, but you like the recording label that exclusively signed this artist and all other singers and bands are dead to you and mean nothing. l

If this was the start of the gen and these were the primary consoles fair enough but I think enough people are settled now and know deep down that the next gen will be right around the corner (these won't last as long as they make out).

I think most gamers are just fine with whatever they have now and will see it until the end. Like I said if they were our primary consoles fair enough but they aren't...they just aren't needed.

BecauseImBatman3204d ago

Right around the corner, you must be mad. Sony is still selling PS4's like crazy and just released the PS4 Pro. With MS releasing a suped up X1 at the end of the year, we won't be seeing next gen till at least 2021 IMO, 2020 at the earliest. Sony is dominating atm, there not gonna start a new generation just cause MS are releasing a more powerful system.

-Foxtrot3204d ago (Edited 3204d ago )

I mean it will be a shorter wait then it was with the consoles launch to the mid gen ones. I'll give it until 2019 when we'll see them announced

The Pro was mostly done to push VR

The Scorpio is to make up for the primary console and is Microsofts last push

I can't see them lasting, not everyone is going to upgrade

BecauseImBatman3204d ago

Well with Sony dominating the generation sales wise, I see them in no rush to start the generation again. Assuming the PS5 and Xbox Two are completely new systems and not just another iteration on the existing consoles which is what Scorpio and Pro are. Both continue with the same GPU and CPU architecture to maintain compatibility. At least that's not what I want. So I reckon we won't see a proper next generation till 2021.

Bronxs153204d ago

@-Foxtrot
yes, because deep down you know that a "MID-"gen upgrade actually means "close to the end" - gen and not "middle of the" -gen. next-gen is right around the corner! /s

RevXM3203d ago

Well I agree with fox.
Sure Ps4 is selling like hotcakes still, but why would Pro and scorpio be reasons for next gen to be pushed back, in the end developers still have to design a game to the standards of the base systems limiting the pro and scorpio in what they are allowed to do. its still XO and Ps4 games just scaled up with a touch up here and there the limitations of the base systems will hinder the refreshed ones.
And the Base systems were underpowered back in 2013, and the refreshes doesnt change that.
And Pro is also underpowered in the grand scheme of things and While Scorpio will be more powerful its still not that good I mean yeah sure 6 TF is kind of a decent amount of power, but it has been 4 years and it can run XO games that already ran in 1080p it can run in 4K. Games designed to run 900-1080p on a underpowered 1.2Tflop system from 4 years back now to be rendered in 4K while otherwise looking pretty much the same with a better texture here and there...

Developers will want more power and want it without restrictions of half a decade old hardware, Sony want to sell more hardware and even if Ps5 releases late next year ps4 will still have exclusives for probably a another 1-2 years after that and probably third party support for way longer. Ps2 didnt stop selling because Ps3 came out, God of war 2 anyone? heck ps1 even had games and didnt stop selling after ps2 came out.

I fail to see how the refreshes justify not making next gen happen sooner rather than later when the base systems dictate how games are designed and hinder the updated systems as the games have to be the same experience and perform satisfactory on these base systems.

If Scorpio suddenly became an exclusive platform sure it could do allright and it would be reasons for MS not to make a another more powerful systems for a another few years, but all it does is play Xbox one games, it doesnt have real exclusives. Its still current gen, it doesnt undo most of the limitations of current gen and gamers and developers have been vocal about how underpowered the base systems are, pro and scorpio are like fancy optional band aids, they dont fix the broken bone. they look nice and stop the bleeding making you feel better. all the Scorpio hype I think is going to dissapoint a lot of people anticipating a meaningful leap in visuals. All the power in the world doesnt change the fact it is only running Xbox one games.

Until it gets here (8 months away) MS will continually be eclipsed by Sony and Nintendo in their current state.

I'm glad to see that power matters again to you Septic. You've been singing a different tune for a long time. Because currently the world most powerful console ever made, has had spectacular games launching every month!

So glad Sony focused on first party last gen instead of catering only to the dude-bro community.

Bronxs153204d ago

@SpaceRanger
Are you implying that Septic wasn't impressed by the difference 900p vs 1080p (xone vs ps4) so therefore now he isn't allowed to be impressed by the difference between 1080p vs 4k (xone vs scorpio)? Because the latter is a greater jump than the former, so much so in fact that it's a different standard, hd vs uhd.

because is sounds like you're saying if septic didnt' ditch his xbox 900p games to play ps4 with 1080p he's somehow now biased to be excited to upgrade his xbox one to a scorpio?

Chevalier3204d ago

PS4 will still outsell everything and Scorpio unless it is cheap you can expect the vanilla S unit to outsell it easily. Generally other than the hardcore crowd price I find is the most important factor I find for most customers and where their friends are playing.

XabiDaChosenOne3204d ago

@Bronxs what games (besides Forza which already runs at 1080p on a console that struggles with 1080p) have you seen run in 4k on the Scorpio? NONE! But keep jumping the gun off of MS's PR I'm going to enjoy the back peddaling come E3 😊

Assuming PC gets a good port. Not a given.

morganfell3204d ago (Edited 3204d ago )

""But yeah if you want the definitive CONSOLE versions ""

Console version? HAHAHAHAHAHA! You can try to lean on the word console if it makes you feel better and allows you some Scorpio bragging rights - which is what you really want but you are still bragging about 3rd PARTY GAMES. And they still look better on PC. Get a CONSOLE exclusive and we'll talk about looking better on CONSOLE.

"Assuming PC gets a good port. Not a given."

Multiplats still look better on PC. Period. And looks is what they are using as a central boasting point. I am just bringing reality to the discussion since they can't boast of real console exclsuives.

ShadowKnight3204d ago

I'm sure you're excited for E3 then

donthate3204d ago (Edited 3204d ago )

MS has done great on all fronts of platform features, cloud support, compatibility and now hardware support. The last vestige and safe haven for Sony is games, but E3 is around the corner.

I think we are about to get the golden age gaming! Lots of software for Playstation, and Xbox has never looked better poised with lots of games this E3. Even PC is set to get some goodness from Xbox Play Anywhere titles as well.

Trez12343204d ago

Games are the main thing like it or not and to say " the last vestige" is a bit crazy to be honest. Xbox fans should be happy because they'll get to play their favourite games on the scorpio which is a big improvement

I don't know about the " golden age" of gaming we're about to enter but if you have a ps4, Nintendo and PC, this start of the year is the best we've had in the last 10 years atleast and hopefully xbox will contribute to make it a truly memorable year. So yeah, if you talking about games then we're not about to enter it, it's already here

SpaceRanger3204d ago

Lmao! I'm trying too hard?
Do you not read the comments?😂 You take this stuff way too seriously man. You all are too easy to fluster with such simple comments.

On a serious note, it's hypocritical to hear all this talk about the "BEAST" coming when you haven't cared for resolution or anything this gen.

Gazondaily3203d ago

lawgone3204d ago

There's absolutely nothing to disagree with there but you have 29 disagrees so far. This place is a madhouse.

ger23963204d ago

In power and price, it'll be difficult to compete with less expensive consoles which have stronger 1st party studios.

sampson31213204d ago

so people that have been playing on the ps4 with their friends, Destiny and CoD will switch and purchase a $500 console? remember sony has deals with almost all these major multiplat games which is as important to Destiny and CoD players than the console they're playing it on.
Sony will kill it this E3 and lower the pro price to $250.

trooper_3204d ago

Multiplatform games...?

Are you serious?

Nobody's going to buy the Scorpio for multiplat games. Microsoft needs to carve an identity and start bringing quality games.

Chevalier3204d ago

It will only be the obvious choice if is priced well. If not expect it to be a bit niche and low in sales. The lower priced systems have always sold better than the premium versions.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3203d ago (Edited 3203d ago )

Some replying in this thread have clearly overstated the obvious:
"people buy more multiplatform games"

But before buying those multiplats you have to choose a console to play them on. If you're a PC gamer, would you choose a console that has it's entire library available on PC or do you the console that has games that cannot be played on any other platform?

If you already have a PS4/PS4 Pro the only compelling reason to buy a Scorpio are the games made exclusive to Xbox One/PC. We all know that pool of potential customers is going to extremely shallow because those games are average to slightly above average at best.

Then you have those who "only" own a Nintendo Switch, another shallow pool of customers.

Then there's that one nagging point, PRICE.

Scorpio is not going to be $399, it's not going to be $499. Microsoft charges $150 for an "Elite Controller." How much do you think they're going to charge for an "Elite Console?" Scorpio won't even outsell the Xbox One S so how in the world do some of you expect it to outsell the PS4?

rainslacker3202d ago

They don't necessarily have to be 1st party games, because that could take a while given their 1st party resources.

But they need to invest in games somehow, hopefully in a 2nd party scenario(like Scalebound), as opposed to just buying up 3rd party games to keep them off of Sony's platform.

+ Show (13) more repliesLast reply 3202d ago
DeadSilence3204d ago

Nobody expected Microsoft to compete with Sony first party, I mean you can't buy a Naughty Dog, Guerrilla or Sucker Punch just like that, it takes years to build studios like those and making new games.

Alexious3204d ago

Thing is, Microsoft got worse through the years instead of improving like Sony. They closed Lionhead and other studios.

Now they have a long road ahead of them to make up for this.

CP_Company3204d ago

so when xbox original was released? anyways, what is relationship with indies? that is a new! can't you move for them? second best title on xbox came from indie, and this time around, indies are damn good, sometimes even better then AAA. Sony risk, they are going in other markets and helping developers, not long ago they moved for China developers, this is huge move! xbox just ignoring rest of the world which is beyond america, they are sort sighted, with such of company behind them, they could be unstoppable.
that is why people loves sony, because they are truly interested in gaming and games.

Lennoxb633204d ago

Sony is more interested in gaming because if they weren't, goodbye Sony.

salis8446d ago

Disagree.

The choices in Heavy Rain barely mattered, it was mostly illusion of choice.

Detroit had tons of endings huge sections of the game were unlocked or skipped depending on the choices you made. Detroit was actually the game adventure gamers had asked for, for generations, but no other dev wanted to take the time to make. And no dev has replicated that level of choice/consequence since.
