Microsoft Exec Denies Taking Shots At PS4 Pro

Albert Petnello:

It's not a shot. I wish people didn't take it that way. I was asked a question and tried to explain in a simple way.

Gazondaily3322d ago

"I was asked a question and tried to explain in a simple way."

And to any level headed person, that was a simple answer. But the insecurity that Scorpio has generated really is obvious in the reactions people had to that.

I bet the very same people so obviously enraged by it were the ones touching themselves up when "this is how you share games" ads were running.

gangsta_red3322d ago

Feelings has been running high lately and a lot of people have to be dealt with kid gloves.

Let them fight!

naruga3322d ago (Edited 3322d ago )

indeed he didnt say smthing aggressive or arrogant...they just want to create titles from simple states and i could say he was rather honest as the Scorpio is basically that a boosted console .....though if Scorpio was needed as boosted console instead of waiting for Xbox Two or if it willl be successful with its anaimic game support is different thing

blitz06233322d ago

Not blaming him for trying to promote the Scorpio in such a way that it will be better than the Pro, but he should have chosen his words more carefully. Has he learned nothing from the internet and media? Especially with how good they are at spinning their statements, he could have just said "we didn't include boost mode because the console will automatically make older games run better". That would have painted a better picture for the Scorpio

donthate3322d ago

To be fair, Albert Penello talked specifically about Scorpio, and said nothing about PS4 Pro. If you were sensitive, salty or insecure (or all of them), then I can see how someone would feel like it is a shot. However, that is a problem that lies within, and nothing about what was said. It's a fact!

It's not like a video was made of how to game share.

Christopher3322d ago

Feelings have been running high since the whole Pro versus Scorpio thing on both sides. I know he's just answering a question, but the game sites also advertise them in a way to get the most attention, and rarely good attention. I blame them, 'gaming journalists' for most of the attention than anyone else.

@blitz0623
And maybe people shouldnt be such whinny little b*tche$ so every comment doesnt have to be scanned before hand for political correctness and so as not to offend anyone, as if that was possible.

Everyone needs to stop being such fkn snowflakes. Get over it. Some talking up their product or even making out like youres isnt as good as theirs will not cause your face to melt off your skull Raiders style. Either take what people say onboard, or ignore it.

All this mock offense is tiring. This world needs to dragged out into the street and beaten with a a big purple melee weapon from Saints Row.

What I really want to know is anyone actually annoyed over this? Any real gamers here actually got their panties all up in a bunck over this comment? I doubt it. More like gaming "journalist" are conjuring another storm in a teacup to insight manufactured hatred and fuel the console war that generates the clicks in this industry. Seriously and big, long, purple beating.

morganfell3322d ago

It was a level headed answer despite the fact Penello has a history of being a jerk. Once again it was the click desiring media, not PS supporters that blew it out of proportion. PS supporters merely reacted to irresponsible hit seekers.

babadivad3322d ago (Edited 3322d ago )

What I don't understand is why Sony designed the Pro like they did. It seems like a ruch job. It's basically two PS4s taped together and up clocked. They basically mirrored the GPU so when running a non-pro game, half the GPU will just shut down and run like a normal PS4. And boost mode only unlocks the higher CPU frequency, half the GPU stays disabled.

Why did they design it like this? It seems like such a waste. They should've done something like what MS did with Scorpio by letting the hardware flex it's muscles regardless if the game was patched or not. It seems kind of rushed.

I honestly do see a reason to upgrade to Pro right now. I can see the feasibility of a user upgrading to a Scropio since all X1 and even X360 games will run better on the new hardware no matter what.

'the insecurity that Scorpio has generated'
back to talking the wooden tongue on the way to fanboy wars? sure you have been..

The tweet was not worth the fuss it was at most clumsy and a bit arrogant. You know well its actually not gamers, and not even fanboys, blowing these out of proportion. You know its what gaming sites like this do and then post in another article the 'denial' blaming gamers for the fuss.
but whatever serves the cause I guess

"this is how you share games" you still haven't swallowed that one, have you? haha. shame that was actually a good one you should applaud instead

Gazondaily3322d ago

I actually thought that Sony ad was jokes.

starchild3322d ago

Why do some of you give Septic so much crap? None of us are perfect of course, but Septic seems more fair and level headed than a lot of people around here, so why single him out? It's strange that the majority of the people that attack him are themselves some of the most extremist and most one-sided fanboys on the site.

OB1Biker3322d ago (Edited 3322d ago )

What Christopher said.
The point of my above comment was the media are responsible for blowing things out of proportion, not the fans unless your blinded by fanboy wars

Bathyj3322d ago (Edited 3322d ago )

The Sony ad was brilliant because every knew that was the way MS was going and they were all assuming Sony would do the same. They were getting tarred with the same brush and had to distance themselves from it.

The ad was short, to the point, funny, and made a statement. That 20 second video said more than an hour long conference could have. It was up there with the 1995 E3 $299 Mike Drop.

And it was never meant to be nasty. It was fun. How could anyone ever be mad at Shu?

Utalkin2me3322d ago

Who cares if he did or didn't. . We can't be that sensitive to a bit of sly bants. Lighten up people

TheVetOfGaming3322d ago

I don't know why everyone got so annoyed. It is plain that the Scorpio doesn't have/need a boost mode.

UltraNova3322d ago

Some people live to be annoyed or offended just so they can start fighting with others. Its the way they can function in today's society.

Personally I havent been more excited about the state of console gaming as it seems that power and tech innovation (somewhat) comes first while cost second!

Sony has done well in supporting both the OG ps4 and pro as promised, they got PSVR out and forced MS to react with the Scorpio. Sony will react to the scorpio. Competition is always good for us.

I'm a PlayStation guy but you're right. The butthurt is strong with the PlayStation community right now.

Utalkin2me3322d ago

MS can pops shots all they want. They have finished behind Sony in every console generation. MS has always been arrogant since the original Xbox and some things never change. At least if your going to be arrogant, back it up with something. They haven't backed it up in the past, so who knows what will happen moving forward for them.

Ceaser98573613322d ago

Being a Playstation fan and also owing the xbox one.. I have to say Scorpio looks impressive and some media are blowing it out of the proportion regarding this Boost mode . It was simply a question and the reply was simple.. Thats not taking a shot , thats being honest. I am personally happy to learn about the scorpio and i hope its around 499 then i can think of buying one. Atm i am very happy with my PS Pro and xbox one. Hopefully this E3 MS announces new Games too, at least one new IP will be awesome. But looks like MS will rely on Third party games to sale the Xbox brand..

Z5013321d ago

He could've just said "no".
Doesn't get more simple then that.
I think we're all intelligent enough to understand if he had answered that way.

1Victor3321d ago

Less is more and with his history of taking shots that's why people thought he did this time as well ,should he has said no it's not needed it was enough to answer and not seemed like taking shots at the competition.

XanderZane3321d ago

Panello "We don't need "Boost Mode" The whole console is Boost Mode." LMAO!! Well he's he not really wrong about that. Just look at the specs comparisons and it's pretty much true.

Why you lyin for, you did take shots. Also, cool this answer some questions

gameseveryday3322d ago

No, he did not. He simply answered that the Scorpio doesnt need a boost mode because it's already powerful enough. How is that taking shots?

UKmilitia3322d ago

its already poweful enough??
wtf you on about,ps4 pro is also powefull enough.
the difference is the scorpio will have boost mode perm on.
i its upscaling games, increasing framerate then its boosting,so boost mode is on.

my beast mode on ps4 pro is left on all time

Chris123322d ago

Nope, he answered a question.Nothing more, nothing less

Liqu1d3322d ago

N4G should start banning them. Low quality, clickbait, fanboy baiting articles shouldn't be allowed.

PistolsAtDawn3322d ago

Only a fanboy would try and say that was "taking a shot at Sony". Insecurities screaming.

Why o why3322d ago

C'mon now. . No point hiding behind your blinkers. It's a bit of banter and a shot at the pro having a boost mode. . Even if a loaded question was asked he could of swerved it if he wanted to. I'm all good.. let them go at it. Don't give if you can't take so Sony fans shouldn't be hurt. I know that game borrowing clip hurt a lot of feelings but it's part of this *war * game on

Xb1ps43322d ago

didnt hurt me i havnt bought a single disc this gen on ps or xb1. i just thought it was stupid but it did make me realise that a lot of ppl borrow games and support gamestop

PistolsAtDawn3322d ago

That only hurt my respect for Sony that they would act that childish.

Take-Two CEO Once Again Side Steps Grand Theft Auto 6 Price Point

Strauss Zelnick says price of GTA 6 is being carefully considered and that Rockstar is focused on "making the most spectacular piece of entertainment on Earth."

Kuma15d ago

If GTA 6 abandons everything that made GTA 5 great, it will crash and burn right out of the gate. GTA 5 was funny and not at all PC. My worry is that they will cave to the PC crowd and ruin the vibes.

Eonjay15d ago

They got freaking BBLs twerking on the top of trucks for the gram, the freaking Flordia joker, and dude running down the stree in their undies and you are worried about it being 'too PC'? The internet has runied gamers. It doesn't matter how non-PC they make the game, you will all listen to the grifters telling you not to believe your lying eyes lol.

gigoran815d ago

"Rockstar Games’ co-founder and former VP of Development Jamie King said he envisions GTA 6 as a game that’s “maybe not quite as edgy or quite as funny” as its satirical predecessors."

oh yeah, totally internet grifters spreading rumors...

blacktiger15d ago

That's part of the plan, they destroyed you but they need to destroy the shareholders? Only 1 shre holder is the true elite that don't care

1nsomniac15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Meh.., if it’s above £55 I ain’t buying it.

Rockstar are genuinely not half the company they used to be. I was a die hard GTA fan I’ve purchased every game and expansion and spin off day 1.

My opinion of GTA6 is that I can take it or leave it. Not bothered. They burnt too many bridges.

DaReapa15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

So they're actually leaving the door open for an L.A. Noire sequel? Nice!

VaNdAl15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

He should just come out and say it already it's getting stupid it's going to be a 100 bucks $200 for the special edition🤡🤡; 29315;🤣♿

Storm2315d ago

I won't be getting this game until I can get it for $70. SHoot, I could wait for it to be even lower. I don't need the game that badly as my backlog is still huge and I am enjoying playing other things.

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay16d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn217d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn216d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown17d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay16d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay16d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac16d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger17d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300017d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde17d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde16d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
