Much has been said about the positives of technology that can reshape reality or even create a new one, but last month two respected academic researchers held a talk at South by Southwest in Austin to explore not just those positives, but also the potential negatives of reality technology.

Good article. But it does come down to how it's used by the user or developer. Or, abused by the user and developer.
One example would be that jail cell simulation. Sounds bad in the affect it would have on the user. But what if a prisoner had a VR unit that simulated being outside in a countryside, forest, at the beach, etc. The positive effect would be that they don't feel isolated. And with headphones, it blocks out the negative sounds of prison racket.
Prisoner could even be educated more visually as they will have plenty of time to learn because of confinement. It's a two way street. Used or abused.
