Huge Crowdfunded Project ‘Star Citizen’ Gets Negative Articles Scrubbed From Web

The articles included damning testimony by ex-employees accusing the developer of misappropriating funds.

Cy3330d ago

Very shady, but not unexpected from Roberts. Star Citizen will probably go down as one of the biggest video game scams in history.

subtenko3330d ago

Whats with all these progress updates then? they have a game out but its not completely finished as I know. What is left to be added idk, cant take that many more years to complete though can it?

Cy3330d ago

It's a scam because they keep selling outrageously priced add ons for an unfinished game that's, at this point, three years overdue for a full release. They've already made their money off the suckers who bought into their perpetual early access tech dem, they never need to actually finish it. If they ever fully release the game with every feature promised in the Kickstarter working like it should after so long in development, then I'll take back what I said, but until then I can't see this as anything other than a scam at this point, no matter how well intentioned it might have started off.

subtenko3330d ago

Well I played it during the F2P week and it looked GOOD. I was online in multiplayer, and I did the space fights mode. Thats what I was hoping you knew of it you kept up with the game more than me. I saw the citizen con update, and it looks GREAT.

Thats why I was mentioning it cant take more than 3 more years or so can it? I tried looking up some to-do list (still looking) but yea....Im more so asking what exactly needs to be added to the multiplayer version, and what needs to be added to single player story at this present time. Btw random people who disagree/agree you can do that for a question it doesnt make sense, chime in if you have some ingisht, im really curious about the game (i didnt buy it tho, holding out lolll)

Lamboomington3330d ago (Edited 3330d ago )

@Cy

"It's a scam because they keep selling outrageously priced add ons"

They're ships. That's the main source of funding. You don't have to like it, but that's the only way a game of this scale is ever getting made.

"three years overdue for a full release"

Yes, let's ignore the fact that the game is now about 10x more ambitious than the game that was meant to release in 2014.
That said, CIG has been dishonest with backers. They never break news about delays and so on. They just leave old dates until the last moment.

"They've already made their money off the suckers who bought into their perpetual early access tech dem, they never need to actually finish it."

Yes, definitely. They never need to finish it. It's not like they'd get sued or go to prison right ?

"If they ever fully release the game with every feature promised in the Kickstarter working like it should after so long in development, then I'll take back what I said, but until then I can't see this as anything other than a scam at this point, no matter how well intentioned it might have started off."

So long in development ? Have you seen every feature promised in the Kickstarter ? Have you seen the ambition of this game ? It's borderline insane.

It's really this simple :-
Game is very ambitious, therefore it's taking lots and lots of time and money. That's it. Maybe they bit off way more than they could chew, and it's going to fail. Maybe they got way too greedy with feature creep. Sure. but saying it's a straight up scam is incredibly stupid.

JasonKCK3330d ago (Edited 3330d ago )

Lets compare Star Citizen to another space sim Elite Dangerous.
Star Citizen started in 2011
Elite Dangerous started in 2012
Both started from Kickstarter
ED released in 2014
SC TBA
ED is now on every platform including VR
ED cost $40-$60 with all ships and DLC
SC cost $40 to thousands for 1 damn ship.
ED $8 million from crowd funding
SC $145 million from crowd funding

Star Citizen is a scam

subtenko3329d ago

@JasonKCK thats like comparing an indie version of Galaga that started last month and came out this month. Dude Star Citizen is very ambitions, has more features, looks better, its massive...

Elite dangerous is a scam if it took that long then, Galaga is a space sim and it didnt take that long.

More money doesnt mean faster development, it depends on the direction.... Good gosh I think you people are just the ones who got refunds or barely know anything about it. Money doesnt just go to people there, it goes to the tech behind the games. smh

Like I said before, you cant call it a scam and I bet some of you people said Hello Games abandoned NMS....yet look at the updates coming in. You people.....

Oh and before PSX, I bet a lot of you said The Last Guardian was cancelled....yet it came out. "its a scam" right....cause you know 100% confirmed fact /s

If it's a scam then why is it playable? Why is everything they said they'd add in becoming available? Do you know what a scam is?

PurpHerbison3330d ago

Cy is a console fanboy.. or girl... Idk. Probably upset that the game will NEVER come to console.

Gecksta3330d ago

Early access is a scam !

bluefox7553330d ago

@PurpHerbison Or, he's not interested in a glorified tech demo. I own a gaming PC and I won't be buying it either, assuming it ever releases.

PurpHerbison3330d ago

@bluefox755 One look at his post history tells all.

subtenko3330d ago

Yea and the citizen con update looks crazy good. You cant just randomly say its a scam. It could be a scam but you dont know...and you can say the same for any game maker. Actually the same thing was said about hello games and NMS which was completely BS to say it was a scam. Its a game thats updating after its released because its using the minecraft update formula.

Cy3330d ago

@PurpHerbison Dude I have a $2000 gaming PC that I actually specifically bought back in 2014 specifically to play Star Citizen when I still thought it was going to be a real game. I vastly prefer consoles because they're so much easier to use, but I have no problem buying PC exclusive games. Nice typical PC loser assumption, though :)

Lamboomington3330d ago (Edited 3330d ago )

Um, it might have had something to do with the fact that the article accused them of federal crimes like Racism and Bigotry with no evidence to back it up. The article literally had ex-employees calling out the marketing head as a "Viper", for example. Then they also just accused her of racism and bigotry, which are both federal crimes. That's why legal action was threatened. What kind of an article is that ?

Also, accusations of misuse of funds without any evidence whatsoever. Just ex-employees speculating on things which they wouldn't know.

Also, the escapist, for some reason, gave CIG a 24 hour deadline to respond. Really need those clicks right ? CIG sent a response, but their response got lost in the 'spam' section of email or some pathetic excuse like that. Escapist did not reach out to them or double check. They just put the piece out as soon as they could. This is very shady, unprofessional and malicious behaviour. How can people support that ?

You want an article with ex-employees talking about troubled development at CIG ? Try Kokatu's article on the matter. They had the same thing, but without all the unprofessional and shitty behaviour. Oh and they also actually gave CIG the chance to respond, so you had all the ex-devs saying all the same things about development, and then CIG's side of the story.

rainslacker3329d ago (Edited 3329d ago )

Racism and bigotry are federal crimes? Are you talking about the hate crime laws? Because I can't see how that would apply to the corporation, as that's generally something an individual gets accused of.

Otherwise, racism and bigotry aren't actually illegal, except in matters of equal oppurtunity....at which times they're actually just civil matters, typically heard by the state, county, or locality, and is not subject to any federal intervention except in very special circumstances.

Not reading the original accusations, it's hard to say what this person was on about in terms of making threats, because they sound empty.

Misuse of funds is actually a federal crime. It's fraud, and depending on the amount, and how those funds were misused, it actually could be a federal crime. An article wouldn't be needed to get an investigation, just make a complaint to law enforcement.

The escapist tends to be more prudent with breaking news such as this, so I'd be more inclined to believe them when they say they didn't receive the response. AFAIK, they don't have any vandetta against the dev.

At the risk of sounding cynical all the hype behind it seemed too good to be true, I feel like this is going to be the No Man's Sky of crowdfunding, but honestly i'd love to be wrong.

Allsystemgamer3330d ago

Considering you can play nearly everything they've shown off right now, it's not going to be a no mans sky. What is there is incredibly fun. The project is just way too big. They need a bigger studio.

softgrip3330d ago

Have you played any of it? Soooo bad.

I check it every month or 2. I'm an early backer, and don't have much faith in it ever being good :(

Absolutely loved the Wingcommander games.

nitus103330d ago

If they get a bigger studio I would be even more suspicious.

subtenko3330d ago

NMS is great, theyve had like 2 or 3 content adding updates so far. If you dislike NMS you dislike minecraft. and if you dislike minecraft then okdie dokie, not everyone likes the same games. millions like witcher 3, I like horizon zero dawn. Doesnt mean witcher 3 was a scam or isnt fun to play,

deadfrag3330d ago (Edited 3330d ago )

What they need is to stop adding new tier objectives to the game prodution and Finnish the game. Its in a point where the game should already be in the final stages of development but they keep adding features like ships, game modes.. in order to get more funds and the game will never get Finnish.

Lamboomington3330d ago

They stopped adding features long back. Ships are not some big feature that pushes back development. Ships are something that need to come out anyway. They have a dedicated ship pipeline that pushes them out and the game will eventually need many more ships anyway.

Sure....since they raised close to a billion they don't even need to make a profit.

blacktiger34d ago

Well You know GTA 6 is like 2 billion dollar. So I don tknow why you trippin

jznrpg34d ago

But it’s not funded by players for over 13 years. And it will release before Star Citizen

blacktiger34d ago

what difference does it make, it's being funded while you are pissed off, money is money. Why do you have emotion?

Pergele34d ago

Did you know you are so stupid? Like it's almost funny

Azurite34d ago

The money is allocated between two games, most of it goes to Squadron 42.

peppeaccardo34d ago

Feels like when at the mall people stop you to give you free products and once you accept they won't stop to follow you until you buy the rest ..... F-DAT !

Noskypeno34d ago

What, you don't want shoe cleaner that costs more than the shoe?

raWfodog34d ago

I do wish they'd release this for PS5 Pro at the very least. I've been craving a good realistic space exploration game since Frontier Developments stopped supporting ongoing updates for Elite Dangerous on consoles. I put a ton of hours into that game and then they just stopped console support when the Odyssey update came out. Pissed me off LOL. I guess I'll get back into No Man's Sky for the time being since there's a bunch of new stuff since I've last played.

andy8534d ago

I didn't even realise you had to pay. Who on earth is paying to play a game that is still in alpha over a decade on 😂

thorstein33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

"A decade?"

This started before No Man's Sky was announced.

2011. It's been a decade and a half.

Shameless plug for NMS: you can build all of Star Citizens' ships in NMS for free. The only difference is that one of these games has launched...a decade ago. And the new update allows you toto capture creatures and battle them in an arena.

Knightofelemia34d ago

It's still a giant money sucker fools and their money are soon parted.
