Would you consider a disc-free console option?

Some gamers may be ready to ditch the disc drive to save on hardware.

heck no because i still use physical disc i don't have to get stuck with games like mass effect andromeda. but instead get to trade it in for nier automata

UltraNova3340d ago (Edited 3340d ago )

That would mean I would have to buy digital only and that means gaming would become a lot more expensive for me. My answer would be no, absolutly no way.

@naruga

Exactly!

naruga3340d ago (Edited 3340d ago )

disc free consoles--- i stop gaminig ....i mnot going to pay for thin air that exist somewhere in some servers and in 4-5 years is not accessible ... none of my games is in digital format

thekhurg3340d ago

I don't have a disc drive on my pc and gaming there is cheap thanks to regular steam sales and no hassle refunds on trashy games.

3340d ago
TankCrossing3340d ago

@Naruga you're right, those discs on a shelf in your bedroom definitely represent the most safe and secure data storage in the known universe. Bullet proof.

darthv723340d ago

While technically I have access to the discs... I have quite the digital library from the PS+ and GwG offers so I am already used to gaming without the disc (for those games at least). And modern systems like the xb1 and ps4, you don't play from the disc anyway so it's almost the same thing. The disc is just the installer and no different than if you download (other than time). You still end up playing the game off the internal hdd (or external if you so choose).

I am indifferent either way.

agent45323339d ago

Why it would become expensive when it lowers game development costs. No more manufacturing, warehouse, transportationm costs and no more sharing profits with a middleman. Better still, no more console development kit to buy. Unreal Engine, Unity, and Cryengine are free of charge. Lower game development costs equal cheaper games

Godmars2903339d ago

Then again, with digital being forced on consumers by game makers, all its really going to take is to require a some kind of resale key regarding patches, something an original buyer wouldn't have to worry about but a reseller would, and physical game media is done. Day-one patching has pretty much established that.

Knushwood Butt3339d ago

Digital can be cheaper.

I just got god of war iii and until dawn for roughly 1 dollar each digital (100 yen)

No way i coulld get them that cheap on physical.

Like real talk.

SolidStoner3339d ago

I buy only blu ray, I can sell, trade or buy used games.. I save tons of money on games I dont like.. and get to try new ones from friends/ shops etc...

Why would I want to rent games and spend more money? :D I use console for this particular reason, I like to own and trade my own games.. and I get exclusives.. I rent games only on PC on Steam.. those with big discount.. If its totally new then its better on blu ray!

Captain_Tom3339d ago

Ehhh PS+ sales are coming close to Steam sales prices. They need to happen more often, but it's close...

UltraNova3339d ago

Captain tom

We are long long ways from the Steam sales model.

Why o why3340d ago (Edited 3340d ago )

No, because I still have friends and family who practice an ancient act called borrowing. The other ancient act I practice is trading. Until I can do the same with digital I'll continue with physical alongside it.

nitus103339d ago (Edited 3339d ago )

If you offload a game from your PS4 to an external drive and take that drive to a friend who also has a PS4 you can play that game on your friends PS4 providing you log in to PSN to authenticate the ownership of the game. Of course, whether you would trust your friend with your PSN login and password is up to you.

As for trading a physical game, you don't really get that much for it although that does depend on the place where you trade it. With digital games well you (at least at the moment) can't do that but if you are willing to wait and to do some homework you can get digital games considerably cheaper than the game on physical disk.

ps360s3339d ago

I don't swap or lend people my games anymore or even bother to trade them in, when I was in my teen years I would but now I just buy them and play them (disc or digital) one I am done with the game I just leave them alone lol

Having the option is best but to have a disc free console...well that's not a good idea right now

But I can see the Switch having a disc free console for some weird reason...just seems reasonable >.<

XanderZane3339d ago

I agree. I like to be able to play my games, beat them and then resell them on EBay so I can buy even more games. That's how it works and how you save money on games. If the gaming industry WANTS to go full digital then all their games being released need to be $30 or less. If they aren't able to do that, then forget it. I'm not paying $60 for digital game that will work only when the publishers/developers want them to work. Digital games are not forever and have no resale value.

LackTrue4K3339d ago

And for all them years I hear all this 8ull 5h!t about how good steam sales are on pc.
# hypocrites

rainslacker3339d ago

Well, it would be optional. But I look at this and think, "OK, it's $50 less, but for something I'm going to have for many years, would I lose out on a good deal from a physical disc, or not be able to rent a game, or borrow from a freind, so is that $50 savings now really worth it?"

Personally, it just seems silly to limit one self. While it may seem great to save a bit of money, it's not going to be so significant unless they really over price the drive-in option, because the optical drives are probably one of the cheapest major parts that go into a console.

porkChop3341d ago

No. While I do but most of my PS4 games digitally, I still buy some games on disc when I come across good sales. And I like being able to borrow or lend out games to my friends. I like having both.

Gamist2dot03339d ago

Same here. When it's difficult to find the disc version of the game on release day like Nioh, I'm snowed in, or mother nature has her days, etc. I buy digital.

3339d ago
kreate3339d ago

Yea look at the Ouya. Disc free console and it was dead on arrival.

SmielmaN3340d ago

Agreed. Any new release I buy is on disc. When I'm done I decide if it's worth keeping or selling. A console without any drive for disc/cartridge is a hard NO

bouzebbal3340d ago (Edited 3340d ago )

if the games cost 50% less than physical then yes why not.
problem isn't the format, it's the digital prices, overpriced.
i think it is a good thing to always make an SKU for digital media only. This SKU will be cheaper than the disc enabled and if the digital games are cheap then it might work.

freshslicepizza3340d ago (Edited 3340d ago )

well if consoles had competitive storefronts like we see on the pc then maybe digital prices wouldn't be such a problem. the issue is retail stores and the genetlemens agreement on pricing because they carry the physical games and hardware.

Perjoss3340d ago

Playstation has actually been very good with sales lately, at least in the UK there seems to be a new sale on all the time.

freshslicepizza3340d ago

How much is Horizon on the PSN store? You can find deals on the PC even on new games. I find PSN has great sales but most are not very good games and very few are from Sony published titles. This happens with Microsoft and Nintendo too because those are aimed at getting you to their hardware.

TankCrossing3340d ago (Edited 3340d ago )

Sony discount their own games pretty quickly, and relatively steeply. There is an "only on playstation" sale right at this minute (UK) that includes discounts on recent releases like TLG and Gravity Rush 2, as well as real bargain prices on older titles like Uncharted 4.

I don't disagree with you though. An open, competitive digital market would make a huge difference, as would giving retail chains a bit of a cold shoulder.

MASTER_RAIDEN3340d ago

I remember a few years back when i finally wanted to finish up gears of war 1&2, i checked the xbox store and the games were $20 a piece. then I went ahead and checked out my local gamestop and saw GOW1 for $3 used and GOW2 for $5 used.
^annnnd thats the thing that gets me most irritated with digital. they dont ever update their prices to reflect VALUE. I understand that publishers cant just compete with any given value assigned to used games, but thats no excuse to lock older games at a price thats just way too damn high.

_-EDMIX-_3340d ago

Even then I still wouldn't

Why would I want less options?

Could you possibly not have that scenario with 50% off digital while still having a physical option?

The problem isn't just prices it's also the format ,you have to consider this takes away a substantial amount of control from the user, so what happens when a publisher goes out of business in the rights to that game are no longer up on the store?

What happens if your hard drive fails? So Download an endless stream of games for hours on end?

This is why options are good.

Sm30003339d ago

Exactly. Options are great for the consumer. That's why I'm pissed android is doing away with removable batteries

rainslacker3339d ago

I agree. Although I wouldn't even buy digital at 50% off. But that's more because I'm a collector.

I'm not against digital by any means though, I will buy digital games when they have those flash type sales where you can get some really good games really cheap. But those kinds of price drops tend to happen long after the game has released. I'll buy the occasional digital game when they don't have a physical release, but those don't tend to cost much to begin with.

"Would you consider a disc-free console option?"
No, Never... Unless all games including AAA were under 20.00. That is the Price that THEY would have to pay for that luxury.

Movefasta19933340d ago

yeah but even then, you'll still be buying like 40 games by the end of then gen and say something happens to your account all those games will disappear.

Goldenarmz3340d ago

No they wouldnt. You dont lose your Digital Media ever. Only downside is for those who do trade ins. But otherwise, as long as your account is active, you will always have access to your Games.

U R 2 E Z3340d ago

It is true, Sony or Microsoft can "ban" your account for any number of reasons, typically without much of a reason as well. In some cases they specifically state that you "will lose all your digital content" associated with your gamer tag/account. Nintendo bypasses this by associating all purchases with a console instead of an account name, extremely inconvenient but still a choice individuals make.

_-EDMIX-_3340d ago

You bring up a very good point.

JackBNimble3340d ago

I get that some of you want physical media, that's your choice and it perfectly fine. But some of your reasons seem so out of touch.
You're not going to lose your account or get banned from accessing your account unless you did something pretty extreme, even then I can't see that happening.

The paranoia seems very extreme.
The only downside may be not being able to to sell your games. Your games will always be there to re-download.

You don't need to defend your decision for physical media with bullshit excuses.

Kornholic3339d ago

Goldenarmz is so wrong it hurts. Digital media you "own" (you don't actually own it, you only have a license to play that game) disappears the second the service they are on goes offline.

madpuppy3339d ago

What is comes down to is that there are going to have to be some more freedoms granted to the consumer before digital games become worth it in my opinion.

Goldenarmz3339d ago

@Kornholic no i am not wrong, you wont lose your Digital Media. Now in some far off chances Xbox One goes completely away, then maybe. But in the real world where I exist. Its not gonna happen. You still have access to your Xbox 360 digital Games... Ps3 Digital Games. So WTF are you even talking about?????

Kornholic3339d ago

@Goldenarmz

Both Sony and Microsoft still exist as a company and Xbox Live and Playstation Network still exist as a service, you idiot. The second Microsoft decides to shut down Xbox Live, you can say bye bye to your digital collection.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio22d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing22d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit22d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing22d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
