The Real Truth About Mass Effect: Andromeda

Mass Effect: Andromeda's crazy animation glitches may be making people reconsider their feelings about delays. Should it have been pushed back?

Games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4 prove that sometimes Delaying a game for more polishing can be a great move. The whole mass effect saga is rather unfortunate

They are fiirst party titles. The problem is that this game was getting too expensive with quarterly projections etc., It needed to be released. They probably feared the fall. Probably should have pushed it to May or June, but again earnings would have faltered.

Sucks for us, but it's not a bad game. In fact it's gorgeous otherwise and combat is a blast. So sad though that something like this will derail much of its release. We deserved better but it's the real world!

rdgneoz33353d ago

Game looks beautiful and combat is great. However, that extra time would have helped with animation and maybe fleshing out the story a bit more as most comments from the EA access period were that the story was utterly boring at the start. Yes, UC and HZD are first party titles, but it's more that the publisher for them (Sony) cares about quality over popping out something to raise their quarterly projections...

joab7773352d ago

I do agree. But I am loving it

pandehz3352d ago

I am so enjoying the gane.

fiveby93352d ago

I am enjoying the game so far but do agree that a delay and fixing these obvious bugs would have been preferable. For those on the fence, I would not disagree that waiting a while to see if bugs are addressed is a reasonable position. Some bad decision making from a quality perspective were made. Sure wouldn't be surprised that financial pressures from EA led to this release. But Bioware should have executed better.

InKnight7s3352d ago

But on trailers nothing was wrong graphics and animations were good. Thats mean they shows us something not exist just prerecording video.

derkasan3352d ago (Edited 3352d ago )

The quarter is ending in just a couple of days. Wouldn't surprise me if EA forced BioWare's hand and wanted it pushed out by then.

GT Sport appears to be improving massively as well. Andromeda just wasn't ready.

yeahokwhatever3353d ago

I just finished Horizon(LOVED IT), loved Uncharted 4, and played about an hour of ME:A last night and love it already, too. Maybe I'm too easy on games? Or maybe these games are just all pretty dang great? It feels like being in a sci-fi movie. The schlock-factor is 100% acceptable for me. The faces just add to the silliness. Not every game can be The Last Of Us, guys.

MVGeneral3353d ago

Remember reviewers play a lot of games really fast and are paid to nitpick. They often review titles on how they feel afterwards. Often times giving games that are more different better reviews because they're tired of the same games again and again.

That being said. For gamers like me and you, that play select games that cater to our interest, not every single crap that gets thrown out there. We tend to like games they don't like as much. A prime example for me was mafia 2. And dead space 3. Those games got okay reviews. But I had a blast playing them. Mafia 2 had some repetitive quests. But they weren't boring or a chore to play. Because I took breaks when playing it. As in I would play and hour, go to work and come home and play and hour before sleep. And etc.
So I'm gonna play this myself and ultimately decide. I always take review scores with a grain of salt.

yeahokwhatever3353d ago

Some NPC in my squad was freaking out, I picked the dialog option to tell him to "use that anger", after a couple of incredibly B-movie-level lines of dialog, the NPC then unloads a few more rounds into the already dead alien laying on the ground. What's not to love about this game? Its hilarious, wonderful, and the action is pretty fun, too.

URtheWalrus3353d ago

Maybe I am too easy on games as well. I remember playing Red Faction Armageddon and I absolutely loved it! Then I see reviewers and fans saying they didn't like it as much as Guerrilla. To each their own I guess

_-EDMIX-_3352d ago

nice to hear that they are still Gamers out there there are not so uptight about a few issues.

I never even liked the facial animation in the original Three Mass Effect but still enjoyed those games even though I knew they were not on par with stuff like Metal Gear Solid ,God of War ,Uncharted ,The Last of Us or anything like that.

Dark_Knightmare23352d ago (Edited 3352d ago )

Same here I truly rarely hate a game matter of fact I can't remember the last game I truly didn't like maybe the swindle. Whether it's triple aaa, indie or somewhere in between I usually enjoy every game I play regardless of reviews or internet opinion. I've played so many wonderful games that I know the masses won't or wouldn't enjoy like 2064 neo stories, dex and the recently released mass effect andromeda which I'm really liking to name just a few. I don't go into games looking for things to hate or bother me and I don't look for every game to cater to my whims or be absolutely perfect. I just go in to find enjoyment because that's what gaming is supposed to provide and it's provided more hours than I can count since I started gaming on my parents nintendo playing contra when I was five

Maybe talk about Mass Effect instead of mentioning the same games in every comment.

agent133352d ago

exactly, mafia 3 was another game that needed to be delayed at least for 3 months.

Game deserves all the hate it's getting. Bioware can go jump in a lake!

DafunkyRebel3353d ago

You realize that it cost 700,000 dollars just to keep development of a game for one month right? EA is the publisher and most likely they called off development and force the team to launch the game early. No developer wants to release broken games but corporate aholes make these decisions

RedPill863352d ago

Figure was pulled from nowhere.

Game won't make much money as its been poorly received. Would have made more if it functioned better. Argument is null.

Npugz73352d ago (Edited 3352d ago )

You can tell that parts of the game are alot more polished than others so ya I bet they weren't given the time to polish the whole game.

The 10th Rider3352d ago

Not to mention the game has been in development for such a long time. I can understand people addressing their anger at the publisher if a game comes out after a 2 or 3 year dev time and is buggy or unfinished . . . But in cases like this the game was taking so dang long that at least part of the blame has to fall on the developer. They either needed to streamline and organize the development and get the game finished earlier or cut back on their ambitions and set realistic goals for the project.

3350d ago
Jman15533353d ago

Bad animations are not the same thing as animation glitches. Glitches are usually rare and always unintended. What we see in game are 95% bad animations. Simple as that.

yeahokwhatever3353d ago

The eyes are super fun to watch and keep me engaged in the dialogue.

Strange_Evil3353d ago

I wanted a Mass Effect with Heavy Rain/Uncharted 4 level facial capture. I really hoped they would have achieved it this gen but I guess their priority was getting it out of the door soon. Such a missed opportunity.

It feels like no one at Bioware actually played the game and just made it in parts and pieces. Any other team like Naughty Dog, Dice, Guerilla Games wouldn't even allow this to go forward from the QA stage.

yeahokwhatever3352d ago

I dont think its THAT bad. If anything, its a bit over-done. Too much like the sims.

lawgone3353d ago

Blame Manveer Heir and Bioware and EA for retaining the racist POS.

JokerBoy4223352d ago

Manveer Heir should be fired over the shit he says about white people. Had he said the same shit about any other race he'd have been fired a long time ago. His POS attitude probably had something to do with the shit quality of the game. It cant be easy building a game when one of your co workers calls you sub-human everyday.

The 10th Rider3352d ago (Edited 3352d ago )

He'd be fired if he was white and saying the same things about other races. There was an article I read about about a couple polls on racism in the US, one from like 20 years ago and the other was from like 5 years ago. 20 years ago it was like 10% of people thought racism was a big issue. The more recent one found the percentage of people who thought it was a huge issue was like 4 times as much. The sad thing is that there's people out there like Manveer Heir who actually believe what they're doing is making things better, when all it's doing is making things worse.

EDIT: From the sounds of things he was already fired. That's good to hear!

boderock3352d ago

Manveer no longer work at bioware, i read that he quit the job after he finished MEA and now he's starting an indy company

They said they would delay the game if it would make the game better. Why didn't they?

Pancit_Canton3353d ago

You are dealing with the one worst publisher in existence. Delay would probably cause EA to lose more money rather than gain some money in the long run.

They ruined so many great developers over the years including..
- Visceral
- Dice
- Bioware
- Criterion

IamTylerDurden13353d ago

I honestly think Ubisoft is just as bad.

Eiffel3352d ago (Edited 3352d ago )

Don't forget Pandemic. Can only imagine what that "EA Battlefront" could have been under the original developer as opposed to the bastard DICE gave us.

The 10th Rider3352d ago (Edited 3352d ago )

EA isn't the best, but Criterion isn't ruined and neither is DICE. EA might of contributed to Bioware's demise, but when Bioware has designers that put political agendas and romance options as priorities in their game design they're signing their own death warrant. The agenda that Bioware holds and is very open about is not present in the rest of EA, it's from Bioware themselves. They've been open about it for a while. On top of that there's been reports for a while that the working environment at Bioware is poor and toxic.

Also, the gameplay of Andromeda isn't the problem, it's the horrible animations and they needed a LOT of work. You'd be talking about a massive delay to fix just the animations while the rest of the game is basically ready to go. On one hand, yeah it should have been delayed, but on the other it's totally understandable why it wasn't. Somewhere along the line more resources should have been allotted to the animation crew, but that's not something you can fix in a month or so. The problem is really that no one had the foresight to see that the animations and cutscenes would be so poor while the rest of the game was ready to launch.

For All Its Flaws, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Approach to Romance is Something ME4 Can Learn From

While Mass Effect: Andromeda was let in several key areas, one of its approaches to romances is something Mass Effect 4 should consider revisiting.

I hope Mass Effect 4 ignores the inferior prequels and instead closely follows the far superior Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition.

anast491d ago (Edited 491d ago )

Mass Effect 4 should just make Mass Effect 1 but better with current tech. Fans would be happy. As far as romance, they should take notes from the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Ristul491d ago

Later Bioware games have to little build up. You can have a normal conversation and all of a sudden BAM! The character you talk to becomes super flirty.

TricksterArrow491d ago

Reminds me of Baldur’s Gate. I wanted to practice some magic and Gale made it super weird. Not even gonna mention Astarion.

gold_drake491d ago (Edited 491d ago )

iii dunno about that.

the only really great and funny dating partner, is that outlaw guy anyways haha he was funny as hell.

other than that, i found every character to be very annoying.

ZeekQuattro491d ago

Shout out to Keri the Asari reporter. Current relationship status be damned as she's game either way. Anything for a good story. 🤣

Mass Effect Companion Tier Ranking

One of the best things about the Mas Effect series is the companions you meet along the way. So here is a tier list of all the companions from Mass Effect!

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast533d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine533d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast533d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman533d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast532d ago

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

BioWare Thinks Mass Effect Andromeda Was Better Game Than Reception Suggested

BioWare thinks Mass Effect: Andromeda was a better game than what reception suggested; taught the studio not to shoehorn open-world without any meaningful content in it.

thorstein568d ago

I played it and it wasn't as bad as people said. Is it in the 8-10 range? No.

It's a 6-7, which means it's a solid game.

LordoftheCritics568d ago (Edited 568d ago )

Veilguard and Andromeda are of similar level to me.
6 to 6.5 ish

Though I think i enjoyed Andromeda's combat and sense of scale a little bit more.

XBManiac567d ago

Veilguard has better graphics.

neutralgamer1992568d ago

I agree with you It was a 6.5 type game. Gameplay was solid everything else was lacking. Playing at launch with all the issues was just absurd. EA could have let the developers keep patching and fix the game but they stopped just like they did with anthem. It’s crazy to think multi billion dollar publishers can’t afford to keeping patching their games get medium size developers can support the game for years

But when you have android wilson running the company what else can we expect.

OtterX568d ago

Except 6-7 doesn't translate as solid. 6 means a bit flimsy, but still good/enjoyable if you can look past the flaws. 7, a little less flimsy, and enjoyable. 8-10 would be "solid".

But I get your point. I skipped the game entirely, so I don't have an opinion on it.

H9568d ago

I played this game back when I wanted to give every game I bought a fair chance and finish it, it was the reason why I stopped doing so, god the game was bad

TheNamelessOne568d ago

I actually enjoyed Andromeda. It wasn't a 10/10, by any means, but I played it years after the fact, after a lot of patching, and I had a good time with it.

anast567d ago

Same, I enjoyed it too. I might even replay it soon.

TheNamelessOne567d ago

Might do the same, honestly. Went through the trilogy a couple months back.

raWfodog567d ago

I liked it as well, and also played it for the first time over a year after it was released. The original trilogy was a better story overall IMO but I still enjoyed Andromeda.

lellkay568d ago

The game is so unbelivably bad, it's laughable.

pwnmaster3000568d ago (Edited 568d ago )

It really wasn’t. Well for me nd I’m a big fan of the series.
Was it mass effect standard? No
But overall I thought it was a decent game.
6-7/10.

Armaggedon567d ago

You might want to try playing a truly bad game. Go boot up two worlds or gollum to get the perspective you need

MatrixxGT567d ago

Wow, two worlds…red ringed my 360.

Armaggedon567d ago

Lol. Its one of the only games that I have experienced buyers remorse with. The only one I can think of is riders Republic.

matt139568d ago

So delusional, the title was an embarrassment to the original trilogy. it’s the equivalent of 2042 to the battlefield franchise.

thorstein567d ago

2042 had a redemption arc and what exists now is a pretty good FPS.
