Mass Effect: Andromeda Review - Destructoid

Mass Effect: Andromeda spends a lot of time not really feeling like a Mass Effect game. If anything, it feels like a spin-off -- the sort of thing created by another studio that's unsure about what direction to take it. Like in the game itself, there are problems with the atmosphere. But Andromeda is very clear that it doesn't aim to be like the other Mass Effects. New beginnings, not funerals -- for better and for worse.

Doesn't sound all that great. Ill have to play it myself. Well...at least i have more time to play the mad games released this year!

UCForce3273d ago

No matter how EA try to please consumers, they will always be the worst company of America. They killed many so many fan favorite developers. The only left is DICE. "Sigh"

Lightning Mr Bubbles3273d ago

What does that even mean foxtrot, I don't get it. It's like a little comic sketch but I don't understand it.

game4funz3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

@UCForce

At least Rare is still around. They were gonna be bought by EA.

Not that theyre doing much better at the moment.

Eterna1Ice3272d ago

@UCForce So they're basically Activision now.

darthv723272d ago

So what they are saying is... Andromeda is to Mass Effect what Shadowfall is to Killzone. Games that are more associated to spin offs rather than be cannon to the original trilogy.

While that may be the case, sometimes you just have to go in a different direction to create a new basis for the story to flow.

Forn3272d ago

Criterion should be on there. Same with any studio involved with their EA Big label.

Bathyj3272d ago

Damn. They killed Pandemic? No wonder I cant get another Full Spectrum Warrior. >:(

6.5... Well there goes mass effect as a GOTY contender.
While 6.5 isn't bad it shows the game is at least average with the reviews I've seen.

_-EDMIX-_3273d ago

yea I didn't see this getting any major GOTYs

Not with Zelda, HZD and Red Dead

_-EDMIX-_3273d ago

@Cup- "any major GOTYs" ie your GameSpot, IGN, GameInformer etc

I like Persona and Persona 5 easily will likely get some GOTYs from some outlets, but I don't see that happening from the major.

Not with a year with a Zelda and something like HZD or Red Dead or even a idea of a GOW4. I'd even see Nier getting the nod above it. I like Persona 5 and have it preordered from some time, but we are talking about it getting a GOTY above other titles that are actually doing more.

I like Persona because of it saying turned based and the whole social aspect with the characters and story, but if I have to give GOTY to something, I'd likely go towards an IP that tried to be new and dared to explore new concepts.

That fits HZD and Nier more then P5, not saying its bad, not saying something is wrong with it, simply that its likely too much of more of the same of the Persona series to really beat out MOST of the games up for that award.

I'm ok with that. Heck, I'm also buying Mass Effect and I respect its a 8 game, not likely to get many GOTY. Thats quite ok.

Someone will give Persona 5 GOTY......I don't see it NOT happening, simply not from the major outlets I listed, not from a year like this bud.

Again....Persona 5 is a day 1, paid in full MONTHS ago for me.

chrisx3273d ago

For a Legendary series like Mass effect, this just isn't good enough

blackblades3272d ago

They should of just left it alone, and did a new ip.

PhoenixUp3273d ago

Bioware would've been better off making Sonic Chronicles 2

sagapo3273d ago

Did you play it? If not, BOOM you have no idea what you're talking about.

JackBNimble3272d ago

Shin
I think we've seen enough from this game in the last few days to warrant a negative reaction like that.
I believe this game sucks too, and I won't buy it and no, I have never played it either.

Flewid6383272d ago

I think he means that, according to the general consensus, it sucks.

sagapo3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

Shin: it has happened to me before, wasting 60€ on a game that wasn't worth it (No Man's Sky e.g.) It sucks, but at least I gave it a chance and could form an honest opinion based on my own experience. This game gets good reviews on other sites ass well, so I'm hopefull the game won't suck as some of you here might think. I'm pretty sure there will be dissapointments here and there, so what. There is still a big difference in a game that sucks and a game that dissapoints in some areas.

Allsystemgamer3272d ago

I did play it

BOOM. It sucks.

Do you mean Bound by Flame with its beautiful animation cutscenes, pretty leaves, realistic combat and scope of the game?

For All Its Flaws, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Approach to Romance is Something ME4 Can Learn From

While Mass Effect: Andromeda was let in several key areas, one of its approaches to romances is something Mass Effect 4 should consider revisiting.

I hope Mass Effect 4 ignores the inferior prequels and instead closely follows the far superior Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition.

anast410d ago (Edited 410d ago )

Mass Effect 4 should just make Mass Effect 1 but better with current tech. Fans would be happy. As far as romance, they should take notes from the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Ristul410d ago

Later Bioware games have to little build up. You can have a normal conversation and all of a sudden BAM! The character you talk to becomes super flirty.

TricksterArrow409d ago

Reminds me of Baldur’s Gate. I wanted to practice some magic and Gale made it super weird. Not even gonna mention Astarion.

gold_drake409d ago (Edited 409d ago )

iii dunno about that.

the only really great and funny dating partner, is that outlaw guy anyways haha he was funny as hell.

other than that, i found every character to be very annoying.

ZeekQuattro409d ago

Shout out to Keri the Asari reporter. Current relationship status be damned as she's game either way. Anything for a good story. 🤣

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast451d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine451d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast451d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman451d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast451d ago

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

IAMRealHooman450d ago

it's like bitch but your shirt back on, your not blue or spikey get away from me

BioWare Thinks Mass Effect Andromeda Was Better Game Than Reception Suggested

BioWare thinks Mass Effect: Andromeda was a better game than what reception suggested; taught the studio not to shoehorn open-world without any meaningful content in it.

thorstein486d ago

I played it and it wasn't as bad as people said. Is it in the 8-10 range? No.

It's a 6-7, which means it's a solid game.

LordoftheCritics486d ago (Edited 486d ago )

Veilguard and Andromeda are of similar level to me.
6 to 6.5 ish

Though I think i enjoyed Andromeda's combat and sense of scale a little bit more.

XBManiac486d ago

Veilguard has better graphics.

neutralgamer1992486d ago

I agree with you It was a 6.5 type game. Gameplay was solid everything else was lacking. Playing at launch with all the issues was just absurd. EA could have let the developers keep patching and fix the game but they stopped just like they did with anthem. It’s crazy to think multi billion dollar publishers can’t afford to keeping patching their games get medium size developers can support the game for years

But when you have android wilson running the company what else can we expect.

OtterX486d ago

Except 6-7 doesn't translate as solid. 6 means a bit flimsy, but still good/enjoyable if you can look past the flaws. 7, a little less flimsy, and enjoyable. 8-10 would be "solid".

But I get your point. I skipped the game entirely, so I don't have an opinion on it.

H9486d ago

I played this game back when I wanted to give every game I bought a fair chance and finish it, it was the reason why I stopped doing so, god the game was bad

TheNamelessOne486d ago

I actually enjoyed Andromeda. It wasn't a 10/10, by any means, but I played it years after the fact, after a lot of patching, and I had a good time with it.

anast486d ago

Same, I enjoyed it too. I might even replay it soon.

TheNamelessOne486d ago

Might do the same, honestly. Went through the trilogy a couple months back.

raWfodog486d ago

I liked it as well, and also played it for the first time over a year after it was released. The original trilogy was a better story overall IMO but I still enjoyed Andromeda.

lellkay486d ago

The game is so unbelivably bad, it's laughable.

pwnmaster3000486d ago (Edited 486d ago )

It really wasn’t. Well for me nd I’m a big fan of the series.
Was it mass effect standard? No
But overall I thought it was a decent game.
6-7/10.

Armaggedon486d ago

You might want to try playing a truly bad game. Go boot up two worlds or gollum to get the perspective you need

MatrixxGT486d ago

Wow, two worlds…red ringed my 360.

Armaggedon486d ago

Lol. Its one of the only games that I have experienced buyers remorse with. The only one I can think of is riders Republic.

matt139486d ago

So delusional, the title was an embarrassment to the original trilogy. it’s the equivalent of 2042 to the battlefield franchise.

thorstein486d ago

2042 had a redemption arc and what exists now is a pretty good FPS.
