Avoid Using SanDisk 128GB MicroSD Cards in the Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch's impact on MicroSD cards demands has spotlighted product flaws.

Neonridr3352d ago

so it's the SD card, not the system itself.

CocoaBrother3352d ago

As of recent, Sandisk cards have been having larger failure rates. I stopped using them years ago

brich2333351d ago

yea, i'm done buying sandisk sd cards. they always get defects down the line.

Actually don't use it in general. It's not the Switchs fault, the memory card has a major flaw. How that passed testing I don't know.

neoandrew3351d ago

Probably the same way samsung *cough* explosive *cough* note 7

burd_persin3351d ago

funny how you say that when the manufacturer of the Nintendo Switch battery is from the same company that produced the the Note 7 battery.

ninsigma3351d ago

@b00m
Yes, but it was the batteries that Samsung themselves made that were exploding, not the third party company. So as far as the switch is concerned, there's no need to worry based on past performance of the battery maker.

I never used a card that large, but knock on wood, I've never had a single issue with san disk cards either. I wonder what the fault really is.

davand1143351d ago

If you have to get a sd card, you should get the samsung ones.

Samsung is definitely great and at basically every store. For my camera I typically see PNY with the better performance and class while being cheaper. That's my best recommendation.

Also, everyone should look into the symbols on your cards and what they mean.

Basically, you want at least the number 10 with an almost full circle, this is 10MB's of speed which is what you want for loading times, and the ability to watch 1080p video, and potentially 4K. Most good brand names should be this or better. But, if people are looking for cheaper options then they will run into some that are out-dated speed ratings. After that, if it has a number 1 or 3 in kind of a bucket shape then they are the same or better than a class 10.

There is also V10, the same as class 10, but there are also V30, V60, and V90. At first, it seems like a lame name scheme. But, the numbers after the "V" are how many MB's per second you will get out of them. So, it makes a lot of sense.

You can also find the PNY Elite 200GB for only $80 right now. That is a heck of a deal for Micro SD cards.

Actually, 128GB is kind of small if you are looking at putting allot of digitally downloaded games on it although if you are only going to buy Switch games on cartridge then you won't need an SD card.

Many AAA games can be in the order of 20GB to over 50GB (The Witcher 3 plus the two DLC is about 70GB on the PS4) although Indi games can be from a few hundred megabytes to over 20GB. In the article, they do mention Dragon Quest Heros which is about 32GB so if you are downloading games at that capacity you will fill a 128GB SD card with only four digitally downloaded games. Of course if on average your game sizes are 2GB you could put over 60 games on the card.

silkylove3351d ago

Breath of the Wild is only 13 GB and MK8 Deluxe is only 7 GB. The other launch games clocked in under 2 GB. I'm guessing Dragon Quest Heroes I-II is so large because it's two games in one, they were originally developed for systems with much larger hard drives, and possibly uncompressed sound. I doubt the majority of Switch games will be over 10 GB.

I've been downloading and playing games on a 64GB card for my Vita since I bought it a few years ago. I've not once had to make room for a new game. I think 128 is plenty for Switch games.

* If you read the person who reported kind of retracted it a bit and said it was a fault card and has nothing to do with most of sandisk cards or the switch as his PC wouldn't read it either.

ShelbyGT3503350d ago

Yup this one goes in the Fake News category.

Omar913351d ago

Hmm i actually have that same SD card in my switch and so far i havent had any issues

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle22d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
