Dragon Quest VIII, the entry which arguably made the series more popular in the West back on the PlayStation 2, is last game in the series that I need to play to finally catch up on them all. Thanks to the Nintendo 3DS port published last month, I’m finally living the dream and closing out my knowledge of the main series, and yes, it’s everything I imagined it would be… except for one nagging problem that I don’t think has aged so well.

The list is as long as it would take you to grind through Dragon Quest VIII. Here are the best JRPGs on the PlayStation 2.
Good list, kudos for adding Shadow Hearts, Covenant is probably the best Jrpg most people have not played and what an improvement over the first one (plus ties with Koudelka which is an awesome game as well).
Take a look at the libraries of your favorite consoles. I guarantee you, other than a handful of fighting games better suited on the Dreamcast, PS2 still has the best, biggest, and most varied library. Literally something for everyone. JRPGs on PS1 and PS2 really were special.
Edit: the article basically just lists every single JRPG on PS2 lol

Dragon Quest XI was the first Dragon Quest ever released on a Microsoft console, and the next title to come to Game Pass should be Dragon Quest VIII.
Well it's already playable on a Xbox thanks to Retroarch. But being available through the Game Pass is more a matter of Square-Enix remaking it or at least remastering it for the current generation.

Do you want to play the Dragon Quest Hero in Smash Ultimate but feel out of the loop? Fear not, GI has you covered.
I guess it's just open world fatigue. At the time when the game came out there weren't too many that had that yet. But now almost all games are open world, so a release today can set in fatigue more easily.
Totally disagree, it's still one of my favourite Dragon Quest games.
When I was away from towns I was busy hunting down rare monsters for monster medals, monsters for my team, or hidden treasures or even just taking my time fighting randoms to fill out my bestiary while getting ingredients to experiment with in the alchemy pot.
There were optional areas in the game also & you could go extra places when you got the other travelling method.
It also still has a beautiful art style, making the world look vibrant.
Yeah, no. Being "open world" was never DQ8's biggest selling point. It's selling points were its orchestral soundtrack, classic DQ gameplay, unique Toriyama art, storytelling and the "Dragon Quest" brand.
Dragon Quest was not some niche SNES-era series when DQ8 came around.
Also, holy fuck are there some major factual errors in this "article." Mass Effect never promised to be an open world game... and wasn't. Traveling between towns in DQ8 absolutely *never* take thirty minutes. They don't even take ten minutes. At most you're looking at two or three minutes of time, which is rendered completely irrelevant with the ability to fast-travel everywhere. And no, there is no open-world Mario game. Perhaps you're thinking of the not-yet-released Mario Odyssey and assuming it's open-world based on a screenshot or video clip you saw?
