Nintendo Switch Review - IGN

Here's our final verdict on Nintendo's ambitious hybrid gaming device.

MVGeneral3356d ago (Edited 3356d ago )

I grew up with Nintendo, and bought all their consoles and games. I even bought wii, but the wii was the final straw.
They left their core fans behind in search of the mainstream. They appeal to them more and constantly screw over the fans that got them to where they were (on top, as leaders of the industry). But now nintendo is a shadow of what it once was, and in constant need of approval from the mainstream and casuals. It was a hard fall from the top. And the Nintendo nx/switch was a beacon of hope. Maybe it was time nintendo got their stuff together and learned from the failure of the wiiu. But no. And most of the people that flock to buy and defend whatever nintendo does are just enablers. They are the ones who let nintendour think they can get away with anything.

They refuse to get with the time. Time and time again they release these weak consoles from the dark ages.
Where is the trophy/achievement equivalent? Where is a larger hard drive?
Where is my bluray/3d blu ray player?
Where is a proper network/online?
Still with the friend codes?
Where are proper apps and programs?
Party chat?
7.1 surround sound?
Cloud saves?
Save data transfers? (What if my system bricks?)
Graphics?
Performance?
Voice acting in games like zelda?

FPSRUSSIA3356d ago

i agree its missing alot of features but we should wait they might add them in with a update later on

MVGeneral3356d ago (Edited 3356d ago )

Not only features but the console is of an inferior design. It seems like they rushed it and released a not well thought out console.
Just watch this, it's a collection of the issues and bad design choices, by people who bought the console on day one:
https://www.youtube.com/sha...

1.Like for example the chargeport is on the bottom so you can't play with the stand while it's charging.
2.And games keep freezing
3. and consoles don't recognize inserted games sometimes
4. And the controller inputs don't get recognized.
5. And the controllers are wobbly.
6. and the left joystick constantly disconnects.
7. It's easy to put the joy con straps backwards and get it stuck.
8. Screen gets easily scratched just by putting it into the dock.
9. Dead pixels that nintendo doesn't cover in their warranty.
And the dock is a piece of crap. Search up the inside of a dock and it's cheap plastic with a small chip the size of two credit cards.

Onenyte3355d ago

Dude if you think they are going to add any of these features at a later date you are crazy .

General is right with what he said .

_-EDMIX-_3355d ago

I don't know, are you still waiting for them to add those features to the Wii?

gbsrnctaln3355d ago

Oh man, that video is hilarious. I hope these issues are fixed. Or in my perfect world, they offer a home only version with Zelda, Mario and the pro controller for $199, which they easily could do. Take away the mobile components...the screen, the super expensive joycons, the need for the system components to be crammed into the tablets size, the need for the stupid ass square joycon controller dock and I think that $199 with at least one of those games + the pro controller is fair.

Oh so you are more of the mindset that if company X has something then companies Y and Z must do the same thing...? Good to know.

I am of the mindset that each company can put out whatever kind of system they want and the games made specifically for them are what matters. Not the features or apps or reward system. It's what gives each platform its own identity and uniqueness.

MVGeneral3356d ago

Not if they are charging the same price, or in this case more.

chris2353355d ago

of course every company can put out whatever the eff they want. as long as they don't act butthurt when no one is buying - everything is just fine.

ps360s3355d ago

lol

it's called moving with the time!

Nintendo can have what other consoles have and can still be unique.

It's forward thinking and to have the best out there with all/or most the features from other consoles

I can't complain as I have a Switch myself but I do see why if Nintendo had put the features that other consoles
have will be much worth my money and make me feel that Nintendo is making a console equal to others and be unique in their own way

Games matters as you say but also any other features including a rewards system/apps will also matter. It helps someone who owns that console see it relevant.

I have to thank Xbox for introducing the achievement system. It makes a game more appealing to complete.

rocketpanda3355d ago

Nintendo has so much potential if they can just get the basics right. It isn't about following company Y and Z. It is what gamers expect and are used to. Friend codes, really? Party chat on an app, again.... really? Nintendo has the got the games down, but everything else, they really need to step it up.

yomfweeee3355d ago

Are you purposefully argumentative or just dumb? Sure they can do what they want, but there are basic things that should be included in this day and age.

Realms3355d ago

What are you talking about some features have become the industry norm and now even expect them to be there, like online functionality, decent memory drive, a good controller included with the system not as an option that you have to buy that's even more expensive than what their competitors offer. Or how about just a standard blue ray player something that Sony and MS have now offered for two generation now. You can excuse Nintendo for being different but some features have become the norm and when it comes staying in an ecosystem that offers you more bang for your buck Nintendo is lacking. I see no reason to buy a Switch right now unless you love Zelda and even then it's still a No for me because to be honest I don't know how well the system will be supported.

Everything you mentioned would probably be done in a year's time frame almost except the blu ray/3d player and 7.1 surround.

I would wait and see because they are dropping a paid service 7 months after it launches

PapaBop3355d ago

Most of the things he mentioned should have been day one features though, waiting up to a year for features many of us have taken for granted for 5+ years is laughable at best, just downright depressing (as a fan of Nintendo games) at worst.

same here. I can recall being a massive megadrive fan when i was at school then the snes came out it was amazing. Bought n64 day one loved it, Bought gamecube day one again it was amazing, then bought wii and its downhill from there my day one purchase of the wiiu was my final purchase of a nintendo product

Stogz3355d ago (Edited 3355d ago )

I'm with you, I was super in to Nintendo my entire childhood, had every system they ever made. When they announced the Wii, it was the first time I had no idea what they were doing and couldn't support them. When the WiiU came out I decided to give them another shot since that system didn't seem so casual, and look what they did, dropped it super fast. I won't support another system from them, and it's a shame but I feel they can't be trusted anymore.

davand1143355d ago (Edited 3355d ago )

Optical media is slow and obsolete. Also you have to be a complete moron to put a bluray player in a mobile console. The party chat, save data transfers/cloud saves are coming in later updates as are the NNID, online network features.

CaptainObvious8783355d ago

The cheap hardware including the tacky plastic screen is very cheap of them. Considering nin is charging well over the price of a much more powerful and feature rich PS4, and built it with under powered components (Zelda doesn't even have AA, that's beyond a joke), you'd think they'd at least manufacture the switch with quality, durable materials, but no. It's pathetic.

I really hope nin fans demand better instead of bending over and doubling down.

MVGeneral3355d ago

They need to demand better. I'm demanding better by not buying their products anymore. That's the only way to vote with companies. By not buying their products they go and try to change it or make it better. If people keep buying it then they see no need to change.

See how the ps4 is, compared to the ps3? Sony listened to all the criticisms. Sony went from ps2 (the most sold console) to the lowest (of the competition ) for better part of the generation, only beating Xbox near the end. People spoke with their money and Sony changed for the better. And now we are left with a better console. People keep buying exclusives so Sony keeps making more and buying more studios.
Speak with your money people. Stop being enablers

Monster_Tard3355d ago

I agree they could do much better in areas, but just to address a couple of the things you mentioned.

Breath of the wild already has voice acting.
Friend codes are only one of a couple ways to add friends.
Having a Bluray player on a portable console doesn't seem like a good idea.

CrimsonPheonix3355d ago

You don't need most of that to enjoy a freakin game.

MVGeneral3355d ago

But you do, to justify a $399.99 (canadian money) console. When a $299.99 (ps4) does all of it and more for a cheaper price.

*troll me wants to say
... what games? :P

Si-Fly3355d ago

You really need Trophies or Achievements? Do you tell girls all about them on dates 😂😂😂

WhoCaresWhatMyNameIs3355d ago

Your idea of innovation is different from mine. I don't believe powerful hardware is the solution. For me, it's the format on how we play games. There are amazing games that never took advantage of high end technology. Again, my opinion is automatically invalid on N4G. The amount of likes you got shows how many conservative gamers reside on this site. Gamers on here want a console with current hardware and a normal controller to play games. More power to you folks, but I want something different and Nintendo fills that note for me.

ElectricFeel3355d ago

I can't believe this comment has 73 up votes "where is my blu Ray player on this tablet???". You know what Switch is, you've known for a while. Switch isn't what I wanted either but you can either buy one or not. I'll be buying one as I know it'll have great games I can't get anywhere else.

PapaBop3355d ago

I really liked this review, focused on the console's strengths without sugarcoating it's flaws. General consensus seems to be that it's an amazing handheld but a poor home console. Seeing how Nintendo have stated multiple times that it's not a 3DS successor and first and foremost a home console, it'll be interesting to see how the future of the device plays out.

ninsigma3355d ago

I'd like to see them flip their stance on the switch. Come out say actually, this is our successor to 3DS. It's first and foremost a handheld with TV output capabilities. Then make a really powerful home console.

Thunder_G0d_Bane3355d ago (Edited 3355d ago )

Nintendo know that great games don't require Powerful hardware. Or else PS4 games would be irrelevant to PC games. PS4/Xbox One hardware is dated my PC shits all over em.

Are we into games or are we into specs??

ninsigma3355d ago

But a powerful, easy to develop for console will bring it on par with the other competitors so that the big third party games can be brought to the Nintendo platform. You all act as if Nintendos games would suddenly lose quality if they were to be on better hardware. In reality the games would be just as good or better (see how zelda is already too much for the switch at times and its a launch game!) while also looking better and having better resolution.

_-EDMIX-_3355d ago

The reality is why does Nintendo need to tell you that? It is beyond obvious that this is a portable device.

ninsigma3355d ago

Because seeing as Nintendo themselves are considering this as their new home console that means all big development will go into the switch. What I'm saying is have the switch as the 3DS successor and have another new console that's actually powerful for once that is a real home console that can also play the big 3rd parties etc.

It doesn't matter what we consider it as. It matters what Nintendo considers it as because what they consider it as will affect how they treat and develop for the device.

hiawa233355d ago (Edited 3355d ago )

But the Switch is their console. You guys keep wanting more powerful Nintendo hardware, given what we saw with the Wii, Wiiu, now the Switch, this is their playbook.

I just don't see it happening at this point. Nintendo says the Switch is replacement for the Wiiu. Nintendo can call this whatever they want but this is clearly a portable that docks, and I have no interests in portables. I wanted taditiknal Nintendo console with at minimum PS4 power. The Switch is not that.

Seems interesting cause it is less powerful than the base models of consoles that came out nearly 4 years ago, it certainly doesn't stack up against the Pro, or the Scorpio, so I am wondering what was Nintendo's goal with the Switch.

ninsigma3355d ago

Yeah I don't see it happening either. It's just something that I feel would be better.

wonderfulmonkeyman3354d ago

Ironic you'd say that, considering the only thing I really miss on Switch is a proper web browser, but other than that it spends most of its time docked and I'm perfectly content to play games with it in that form.

3355d ago
chris2353355d ago

that's what you get when you are delusional+got wayyy to much money on your hand. you are surrounded by yes-sirs and you are producing flop after flop after flop. until the resources are gone and they'll have to go full circle and produce rice cookers again. no, i am clearly exaggerating. except that they are delusional, that's the sad truth.

MVGeneral3355d ago

Hopefully their failure means a company like Sony or Microsoft buys them and incorporates their studios together to make the ultimate platform.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle16d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
