Microsoft Should focus on Exclusives, not subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass

Lex: "I strongly disagree with this new type of subscription. Microsoft has focused more on improving their subscription plans rather than getting more new IPs for Xbox One. That Scalebound cancellation was a big blow."

Finally someone that gets it! I agree. Who cares about renting games? I want more exclusives new IP's and just more games period.

UCForce3374d ago

This is something I agree with. Like I said before, I keep my old game for free. And no, I didn't touch PSNow and never will. More importantly, exclusive game is where important.

Eonjay3374d ago

The Xbox community needs to be more aggressive with their corporate overloads. This isn't a sutable substitute for no decent exclusive content for 10 month streches. And I agree with you about Now and Pass... they ask us to pay to rent games on systems we most likely already have. This about what they are asking for now: $120 a year on top of the $30 for EA access on top of $60 for live. PSNow is even worse... and while you can easily make a case for Vue (I'm looking at you Comcast subscribers), see that these companies are going hard on subscription services. And Microsoft has now used it to replace their exclusive offering...

bouzebbal3374d ago

I think this is a step closer of them becoming a service. The play everywhere thing will widen to more platforms in the future, cloud based.

'Microsoft Should focus on Exclusives, not subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass'

I was thinking this but didn't want to take anything away from a better subscription service by stating it
I guess it's about priorities but for others, something like this are welcome. Good luck to the service. Let's see if Microsoft can finally nail the exclusives part of this gen

darthv723374d ago

The fact they are announcing this now leads me to believe they have something bigger planned for the future of xbox. Might be xbox exclusive, might be xbox inclusive but they will have more information as we get closer to E3.

Suwarbox13374d ago

@darth

Nope. The fact they announced this now is because they are getting slaughtered and a megaton ps4 exclusive horizon ZD was about to drop to which MS had no counter and then the launch of switch. That's it. No need to overthink it buddy.

Eonjay3374d ago

@Darth

Are you saying like a something more inclusive than like windows 10

LP-Eleven3374d ago

Well said. The focus needs to be on new games, otherwise what's the point in owning one?

dirkdady3374d ago

Honestly don't see what the big deal is. I tried ps now worked pretty great and like the fact I could try games without having to deal with 30gb downloads but ultimately I really don't have the time to play old games let alone my back catalog of newer titles.

I can't imagine a lot of people sitting around hours to download a game to try it to only delete and download something else. I think in reality this isn't that ideal for most gamers.

Maybe good for parents with kids?

Malacath3374d ago

There are plenty of games. Not enough exclusives though but enough that my xbox one gets far more use than my ps4.

It will get even more use once the games pass is fully operational

Kribwalker3373d ago

Yep, over 1000 games plus over 300 backwards compatible games available now, but they need more games.....I buy a lot of games, I now have over 215 on my Xbox alone, not to mention other consoles, but they need more games, I got it

Exactly, although it's a good service, this seems nothing more than smoke and mirrors to cover up the lack of 1st party games.

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ3374d ago

Of course BUT wtf does this have to do with that?! Stupid header is stupid, The in-house teams who work with 3rd party studios who are exclusive to MS and coming up with new IP's have nothing to do with the Team who made a subscription based system to play a library of previously released games... Lol try harder.

R&D Team has nothing to do with the promotional side of things in ANY business... People who agree with this are uneducated on the subject, not trying to be rude.

"Microsoft has focused more on improving their subscription plans rather than getting more new IPs for Xbox One"

What? Those two things aren't mutually exclusive; it's two separate departments at Microsoft that are responsible for acquisitions of exclusive games from developers and managing subscriptions/services.

psychometer3374d ago

The head of Xbox is still in control in terms of subscription and acquisition of first-party studios. They're putting more budget to make subscriptions like these instead of getting great first-party studios.

Literally, they're in different departments. But resources used are the same = money.

KillBill3374d ago

If you think that this subscription plan is not going to be an easy money maker that will fill the tills allowing for more resources towards exclusive titles then you are likely one of the same people that thought XBL was going to fail and that dial up would have been a better deal for their initial multiplayer strategy.

3374d ago
BlackTar1873374d ago

@killbill

So all MS needs is more money to make exclusives? Okay got it they are short on money..............

kayoss3374d ago (Edited 3374d ago )

The problem here is that Microsoft knows that they make more profits through Subscriptions. This is why Sony when with the paid subscription for PS plus. I think Microsoft feels that making new exclusives and IP's is to risky in terms of profits because everyone knows that the Xbox division is losing money.

Mr-Dude3374d ago

Playing it safe isn't helping MS very much. Sony is very known to back a lot of games, even the most weird ones or the most niche ones. Little Big Planet is a good example, Media Molecule went to MS first, but they found it to risky. Now we are 4 games further, and with Dreams? That is becoming a very huge niche game. MS would never do that.

And that's what makes Sony my choice, they have a lot of diversity in games, and takes risks.

Malacath3374d ago

Yeah. There is no reason why MS can't do both.

Use revenue from the subsciption services to get more first and third party exclusives.

Majin-vegeta3374d ago

Exactly all I know is if I bought a next gen console.I would prefer New experiences.not old stuff I already played.

UltraNova3374d ago

Strangely enough MS has convinced their fans that older games and paid services offering old games again, is the new shit while new exclusive games, ie the real reason to invest in MS hardware are a fad.

Kribwalker3374d ago

But you get Xbox one games included in the service. So you get old experiences as well as new ones in it. It's not like making a sub system for already digitally available games is a huge manpower draw.

UltraNova3374d ago

No you wont ever see day 1 releases on this service thats why I said older games meaning at least 1 year old.

christocolus3374d ago (Edited 3374d ago )

Exactly. And more publishers will join in as time goes by. I also imagine this will be really good for those planning to buy the console this year especially around the holiday season. It would be great if MS includes a one month Xbox Game Pass trial code with every Xbox One\Scorpio sold this holiday. Might as well include a free month of EA access too and even more interesting game sharing works with Xbox Game pass so more people get to try out the games. People can spin this news all they like...it's nice to have options and that's what MS is doing. No one is forcing these features on Xbox fans. It's just an added feature and doesn't stop MS from developing more games. XPA, EA Access, XGP are all additional features available to Xbox gamers. You don't like it then don't get it. Simple.

Sparta073374d ago

Soooo.... this is ok with you?
Instead of getting new ips and true exclusives, you get a BC box that plays old and non exclusives!?
You are a very devoted fan.
😒

Kribwalker3374d ago

This service is no different then having the option for PSnow but it's a better service with last gen and this gen games at a better price. It has nothing to do with exclusive games, those are being made by studios. This service is being made by the same guys that do the OS etc

UltraNova3374d ago

Krib

Although i cant disagree with what you are saying I cant turn a blind eye to the fact that MS should have solved the 'new 1st party games' problem first then worry about BC and old game paid services later.

Sony has done right by their customers who bought their system via a new game onslaught then offered PS now. PS now took the back seat to new games and constant new game support not the other way around.

Microsoft is taking bc compatibility to a whole new level but where's are the this gen games at?

3374d ago
mcstorm3374d ago

It depends how you look at it and what type of gamer you are. For me the Xbox has more exclusive games than I wanted on the ps4 but the wiiu had the most. Not everyone thinks the same but I'm a racing fan and Xbox one had the better and more racers.

As for the pass it's a great idea for people who don't buy many games. For me I won't get it but someone like my dad who dose not do much mp in games but world of tanks but buys games when then drop in price for sp it's a great idea. It will cost him £120 a year for games and he spends more than that now a year.

As I said it's not for everyone but fits in well for some people and having more options is always a plus and not forced on you.

Gaming4Life19813374d ago

Xbox game pass seems like a great idea and I agree making could use more exclusives but it's not like they don't have great exclusives, they could just use more.

SilverDemon3374d ago

Ms closed alot of its studios and offer more and more services instead of games. Not for xbox but also for pc

They want xbox to be service instead of dadicated gaming console

BlackTar1873374d ago

They really drop like 2 games in the first 9-10 months of the year for like 5 yrs straight

Won't happen, software is where all the money is made. These companies take losses on these consoles and then make up for it with software sales.
