"Games With Gold was only introduced as a direct counter to Sony" and this writer must not see how PS+ was introduced as a counter to MS gold. Gold offered discounts on games before PS+ was even announced. Sony could not charge for their online service because it really wasn't worth paying for. Gold started on the og xbox and really improved when it hit the 360. sony was starting from scratch and to try and charge right from the start would have been suicide.

Hence they came up with their members only service PS+. Members were given discounts on games and other media as a means for them to make some $$ back on offering free multiplayer. Something they obviously started charging for with the PS4. The decision to add in freebie games came much later. Unlike GwG (on 360) PS+ games are only good for the life of the membership. That is something MS has adopted on the XB1 but they still let you keep and play the games on the 360 if you cancel your membership.

PSNow offering PS3 games in a separate sub is one thing but I do believe you need PS+ if you wan to play any of the multiplayer portion of those games. Just like how this game pass will still require Gold in order to play any of the multiplayer games on xbox. you may not need Gold or PS+ to just simply get the basic features of PSNow and Game Pass but it certainly helps to get the most out of what each offer.

Or the article simply wasn't supposed to be a history lesson, or who-copied-who cat fight.

Where Gold and Xbox Game Pass go from here will be more interesting than how the the past. If Games With Gold and Xbox Games Pass co-exist, I wonder which service will be more lucrative to the partner publishers?

I believe they are talking about the rise of the free monthly games. Sony started the free games as a PR move after the massive hack which lead to millions of users credit card information stolen and continued the free games monthly as long as you were subscribed to PS Plus... MS held off for sometime before adopting the free monthly games.

It's not a comparable product to psplus but more a direct comparison to PSnow. They are both sub based rental services. One just offers better value for your dollAr at a cheaper cost. $9.99 for previous and current gen games a month vs $14.99 for just previous gen.
Both services have games that come in and out, so I would say they are directly comparable

TheCommentator3372d ago

Let's compare them a bit more then!

PS Now is a streaming service that severly limits the games' graphics, audio, and even original features. It also constantly depends upon reliable bandwidth, is always online (who wants always online?), and is losing most of its device support soon (not a very good sign for the success of the service).

Game Pass not only gives you original quality on everything by storing on the HDD (regardless of connection speed/reliability), it also gives you discounts on purchasing the individual games/add ons on the list of titles you get to play.

Kribwalker3372d ago

I agree 100% that it's a better product,

mikeslemonade3372d ago

Or buy a PC and steal games for free. Both services lame and BC is lame. Only non-serious gamers would use this service. Any core gamer would be above using such services.

RosweeSon3372d ago

You seen the list of games... dribble no pun intended NBA 2K16... free on ps+ Lego batman Saints row 😩😂 all the big guns there. Halo 5 is about the only Big exclusive not played it tho so can't say if it's any good only just finished 1-4... however apart from a Gears I saw maybe the list looked pretty average at best... they don't have the games to give away on the service that's the problem. Oh yeah have Forza's halo and gears what games can we still sell? Oh none that's all of em.

TankCrossing3372d ago (Edited 3372d ago )

PS Plus is a sub based rental service. That is for some reason mandatory if you want to play multiplayer games.

gangsta_red3372d ago

The fact that you don't need to be a Gold member is a plus but also let's me know that this service is a direct competitor to PSNow. I wouldn't be surprised to see this on PC and other non gaming devices from MS down the line.

So far this is looking like a pretty good deal, and can only further boost a backlog of games I have yet to play.

TankCrossing3372d ago

First sentence in the announcement talks about freedom to play on any device. And you know MS want to squeeze a subscription out of PC gamers, that has to be one of their ultimate goals in embracing PC gaming as they seem to be.

gangsta_red3372d ago (Edited 3372d ago )

Agreed, MS can't force a multiplayer subscription on PC players, that is a career suicide.

The only way to get any type of steady income is to offer a service like this to PC gamers.

I am still curious if MS's push into the PC realm will even pay off?

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio25d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing25d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9225d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit25d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing25d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9225d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

To be fair, there are also human made games that release and lack any fun at all either.

jznrpg28d ago

But all of the great games have been made by humans

One is by choice, the other is a feature.

Guild Wars 2 been playing for 14yrs, 1st beta. This is just one company I support, Arenanet and NCSoft, even though I torrent, there are a few PC companies I will buy from. "PlayStation’s Horizon MMO spin-off, Horizon Steel Frontiers." I feel this will be good, NCSoft is a good developer/publisher.

CrimsonWing6927d ago

It’s a tool. Use it elevate things and get it done faster. I’m sorry but not every game made by humans is good. If this can help things, then I fully embrace it.
