Xbox vs PS4 vs Nintendo vs PC RAGE - Stop it.

At its best, the internet is a wonderful place to freely distribute creative works and discussion. At its worst, its the lower half of a youtube comment section. Why do so many gaming discussions quickly descend into the fiery pits of fan rage? My best guess is a psychological attachment to branding.

masterfox3368d ago (Edited 3368d ago )

A light example of a fanboy mentality in a comment section:

Fanboy person: This thing is soo innovating and advance and is the best thing above all
Normal person: hmm really whats makes it so special ?
Fanboy person: hmmm tTHE brand of COURSE they are awesome!!!!
Normal person: oh ok, can you be more specific in how is so innovating without mentioning the brand? what specs does it have ?
Fanboy person: aww well it has... this... specs and stuff... and there are awesome and portable.
Normal person: I see but those things already been done before like even lots of years ago(gives examples), so how exactly is innovating if its done in the past?
Fanboy person: YOU KNOW WAHT!? SHAT UP!, you are just a hater and a fanboy!! the BRAND is AWESOMEEE!
Normal person: oh ok I see, ok see ya.
Fanboy person: Wath diDN't like what I Told ya stu#$id fanboy? such HATER !
Normal person: (stops replying on this thread and moves on)

If loving a brand that gives me joy and great games is being a Sony fanboy, judge i plead GUILTY!

Imalwaysright3367d ago

And if other brand does the same for other people, is it ok to be arrogant, opressive and obnoxious towards them just because they enjoy that brand? That's what I see here constantly.

Bobafret3367d ago

Ladies and gentlemen, I present exhibit A.

game4funz3367d ago

No. Loving a brand does not make you a fanboy.

I love HTC phones...but you wont see me complaining about Samsungs or windows phones. Couldnt care less.

specialguest3367d ago (Edited 3367d ago )

Don't forget the constant trolling of other inferior spec consoles offering nothing to the conversation but to bash it. It's ironic that the person who hates a certain brand are always predictably there first to comment and follow that console closer than a fan. Let's not pretend you're a "normal person" lol

Matology3367d ago

That's pretty much sums up the N4G comment section.

FyBy3367d ago

Believe me there are much worse comments on different sites. I generally enjoy n4g discussions where I see comments from all type of persons : fanboys, reasonable ones, haters, lovers...

OB1Biker3367d ago

That was actually funny.
I think theres a big difference between fans attached to a brand they have enjoyed for a long time and fanboys who worship a company. There s nothing wrong with being a fan of PlaySation, Nintendo or Xbox.

Xbox what? Nintendo what?

Don't just list a brand and a company and then compare them to a single console

The maturity level of gaming fanatics on the internet is shameful. I would love to be with any one of them while they are with loved ones then begin to talk on the subject. Im sure any of them over 15yrs old would try to escape the conversation when I started quoting their behavior. Or bring it up around a girl or boy the person is attracted to. They might learn something. I wish that I knew some fanboys irl, because I would love to try this.

On a larger scope this immaturity is directly contributing to the negative stigmas about gaming. There are applications that gaming could accelerate learning by a significant magnitude. However these things will never see the light of day as long as gaming is seen as a child only hobby, a catalyst for violent behavior, and an overall waste of life. It is time for the people that are the problem to step back and look at their behavior on a personal level. It is neither any of your business or concern what a stranger chooses to spend their money on. Youre old enough to know that you shouldnt care and it isnt important to the world you live in.

The platform wars arent helping gaming. Someone said yesterday that they are good for gaming because they push manufacturers. This simply isnt true. Gamers will not magically disappear if the revolting immaturity disappears. Manufacturers will not suddenly stop trying to sell their product. A monoply by a company is what everyone should fear. Ironically a monoply is exactly what these childish fools are hoping for.

rainslacker3367d ago

In real life, people tend to be much more reserved, and I bet 99% of the vitriolic types on here would be nowhere near as hostile and likely could even hold a decent conversation about games.

That's been my experience at least.

Internet has a way of bringing out the worst in people, as there is little ramification from being a jerk.

Loyalty to a brand (or sports team, political party, etc) is a form of tribalism, which is a product of evolution, so it isn't going to go away no matter how much people wish it would.

Cobra9513367d ago

If a consumer brand becomes part of tribalism--which is an important survival mechanism IRL--fanboys are more far-gone than I thought.

Krauser23367d ago (Edited 3367d ago )

I don't think far-gone is the right term..makes it sound like there's no hope. I think they just haven't matured to the point where they become more self aware.

uth113367d ago

It is a survival mechanism, but because it's less important in the modern world, our instincts cause us to attach to less important things.

Selectgamer3367d ago

It could theoretically evolve out, but I don't see that happening by the next console cycle.

game4funz3367d ago

As long as you avoid forums or comment sections this whole fanboyism thing doesn even exist,

uth113367d ago

It's been going on longer than internet forums existed.

game4funz3367d ago

Im loyal to many brands. Im not gonna go out of my way to attack others though,

uth113367d ago

The other part is the threat the other side winning poses. If one side wins the console wars, it gets all the good support, and your platform might even get abandoned. That's why this instinct is strongest in areas where your side could clewrly lose, again like game platforms, sports, politics.but your don't see epic debates over laundry detergent, even though people can be fiercely loyal there too.

game4funz3367d ago (Edited 3367d ago )

@uth11

Good point. But thats why I feel there shouldnt be any animosity. Instead there should be encouragement for each platforms strengths.

I wouldnt want any of the platforms to go away. It would mean less competition and more room for gamer abuse.
Not to mention there are games I want on all platforms and just because I would prefer certain games over others doesn't mean I want those games to go away either.

For instance...backwards compatibility. I see this feature being constantly belittled but the lack of this feature is probable abuse of gamers. Instead of keeping your games you have to rebuy the remastered version for the next gen. And if you run on a budget chances are you used the older system to buy the newer one.

The appropriate response from me, as a playstation fan since I was like 10, would be to tell sony I want this feature. The pathetic excuse that you want a new system to play new games not old ones doesnt work if you then go and say you've replayed uncharted a lot or want to play an old game like crash bandicoot or if youve bought a remaster of any game at all. Its actually quite hypocritical.

As a sony fan I want sony to succeed and to give us features like backwards compatibility with old games. As well as continue the 1st party ip they do.
As a MS fan I want new IP but I also want halo, gears and fable. I still like those ips so I wouldnt want them to disappear. Regardless if I like God of War more.
As a nintendo fan I would want nintendo to keep pushing zelda games, and mario party, and mario kart and possibly new interesting and fun family games or party games.

Lets put it this way. Im a fan of gaming so why would I want less platforms dedicated to gaming? Why would I laugh or enjoy it when a platform, that holds certain games, is struggling? What do I gain from it except possible abuse?

If it werent for Sony some people wouldnt be able to play xbox offline. If it werent for xbox live sony may not have pushed out ps+, if it werent for ps+ MS would not have pushed games with gold, if it werent for xbox live the standards of online console gaming may still be back to what Resident Evil Outbreak was like. P2P servers are not good no matter what anyone says because certain players will have an advantage over others. Dedicated is the best. Without MS bringing Halo to consoles (it was originally intended as a mac only game I believe) we wouldnt know anything about awesomeness of halo and MS pushed it to multiplayer.

rainslacker3367d ago (Edited 3367d ago )

The loyalty isn't really the issue, it's more the unhealthy attitudes that are borne from that loyalty and the way they're expressed at times.

Loyalty really only becomes a problem when it blinds one to the shortcomings of what they're loyal to, and prevents them from stating what would make them happier with the brand itself. Not stating criticism has a way of allowing bad things to continue, as it can foster this sense that everything is OK, when that's not always the case. Of course, the larger market tends to work these things out, but it doesn't help in discussion threads about the brand itself.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio19d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing19d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit19d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing19d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
