Facebook's Oculus is facing a total shutdown

Looks like it's not over between Oculus and Zenimax, the parent company of Bethesda

DigitalRaptor3373d ago (Edited 3373d ago )

What a mess. I'm not sure what to think considering I'm sure there are plenty of great people in the company who innovate, but everything else leaves me second guessing.

Will Microsoft swoop in and salvage the technology for Xbox, or will they have to go shopping around to get a piece of whatever they can? Another reason why it's important to invest in these things rather than rely on a third-party who could fall through at any moment for whatever reason.

optimus3373d ago

nah, Microsoft was smart in not making their own. VR is still too expensive and too bulky for home use. the fanfare is slowly dying out. even the psvr has been heavily discounted overseas cause nobody is buying into it. VR falls in the same category as 3d gaming, and motion controls. I think Microsoft decided to let others test the waters so they wouldn't have to lose money in developing their own...by this time next year VR gaming will be a thing of the past.

Elda3373d ago

I think it's all a fad as well, see how long this VR ship sails.

ninsigma3373d ago

"too bulky for home use"....

Yet people use it for home use everyday...

bouzebbal3373d ago

I'm not sure if you are pretending but it's a nice load of bull you have there.
Where is psvr heavily discounted ??? And who has a psvr stock atm anyway ? It's ok this time but shut up next time.

DigitalRaptor3373d ago (Edited 3373d ago )

That's similar to what I hear when it comes to game development: "Microsoft is smart getting third party devs to make games for them"... but many of them ended up on PS4 and them closing first-party studios makes the consequences of that kind of lack of true investment even more transparent.

You say VR is still too expensive, but you said that it's also being heavily discounted right? So... good? Where did you hear about it being discounted overseas and why is it cause nobody is buying it? Explain to me how can they buy it if it's not in stock?

It's also not too bulky if you get the form factor right first time around, like Sony did with PSVR. In terms of mere sensory experience VR is COMPLETELY different to 3D gaming and motion controls on their own. That is, if you're talking about the experience and level of immersion it provides. I'm not sure if you're talking about the market - or what there...

It's okay that you think it will be a thing of the past in 12 months, but what if it isn't? Microsoft would have been smart to get involved and build up a foundation for themselves. It's why they're not the market leader in the gaming industry and never will be, as much as they want to be.

fenome3373d ago

This time next year I'll quote you on that and see where it sits.

morganfell3373d ago

They can't salvage the technology if it is under a court order.

T2X3373d ago

What are you talking about? All of your points are patently false. Overseas discounts? Too bulky for home use? Just had to point that out. Hey believe what you want. LOL.

spoonard3373d ago

Are you taking anything for these delusions??

optimus3373d ago

wow you playstation clowns are always in denial when it comes to Sony...the writings on the wall...

Profchaos3373d ago

Psvr has been discounted no where do you have any sources. It's still sold out in Australia and that is not an uncommon story with close to a million units sold supply still outweighs demand

UltimateOwnage3373d ago (Edited 3373d ago )

After playing RE7 in VR, and looking towards Farpoint, GT and Ace Combat, I very much hope you're wrong about that. VR isn't perfect, and short of it delivering the full fidelity our eyes and ears are capable of experiencing it will always have somewhat glaring faults, but it makes gaming feel new and exciting again for me in ways 3D TV gaming and motions controls never did on their own. The combination of all those technologies provides something I've been hoping to have in my home since the old movies like Lawnmower Man were released, and gaming was just diving into the 3D polygonal era. To each their own, but I freaking love it. I'm also super excited for Switch, and love my PS4. Its an amazing time to be a gamer.

Silly gameAr3373d ago (Edited 3373d ago )

It's really bad when people try bring new experiences to gaming and some only want to see it fail. MS would do what they usually do. Let others take the risk and then swoop in if it's successful, buy technology or software that's almost complete, and then act like they're the first and the best to do it.

Not trolling, but that's usually how it goes.

OB1Biker3373d ago (Edited 3373d ago )

'by this time next year VR gaming will be a thing of the past.'
Haha come back to this comment next year for a good laugh

Your link to extremetech is out of date and part of a slew of PSVR 'worries' for you to click on the last few months. Sony did speak up about PSVR sales recently

Liqu1d3372d ago (Edited 3372d ago )

Nobody is buying PSVR yet Andrew House confirmed it's almost at 1 million units bought by consumers. Try talking facts next time.

bouzebbal3372d ago

@optimus:

Answer my question in my previous post before you post garbage. You sound so delusional.

Goldby3372d ago

@Optimus,

Just a heads up, Sony is actually just under 1 million PSVR units sold, and it would have been more if they coul keep up with the demand.

Cy3372d ago

This. VR is pretty pointless for gaming, but the headsets are still so expensive that gaming is really the only way to market it as worth the price.

Microsoft was smart to wait it out. I wonder how long the HTC Vive will last? Sony is saying demand for the PSVR are still high, yet they are not releasing many more of them to retail. Claiming they are having a hard time getting on the parts to make them quickly. By the end of the year, we'll know if the demand for PSVR is really high or not. I still would like to try Resident Evil 7 using it.

spoonard3373d ago

"... yet they are not releasing many more of them to retail."

Just curious on your source for this piece of information...

lodossrage3373d ago

@spoonard

Didn't you know, this is N4G. We don't need no stinkin sources to back up our facts lol. We make up our own facts :)

XanderZane3372d ago (Edited 3372d ago )

@spoonard
There was obviously supply problems due to certain parts like I said. This is one of the reasons they aren't able to released 500K's more quickly. This was one of the main reasons I thought they should have delayed the PSVR until Spring 2017. This would have given them ample amount of time to make a lot more units and more VR games. There was no reason to release it at the same time as the PS4 Pro. That was just a bonehead move my Sony trying not to miss the X-Mas rush or release within Nintendo's Switch window launch. It's obvious they haven't released a huge supply, as the PSVR Bundles are still sold out. You can still buy the PSVR individually though at Gamestop & BestBuy. I see those available. Someone thinks they are releasing 200K ever month, but I doubt it.

Microsoft announced their own vr headsets starting at $299 back in October. Pretty sure they will be the focus for xbox vr games.

Goldby3372d ago

they partnered with companies making the VR headserts, still no Microsoft's own headsets

kevnb3373d ago

What's Microsoft going to do? Facebook has plenty of money and I'm sure if anyone can keep things going it's them.

CoryHG3372d ago

Check Ebay and you'll see it's hardly discounted.

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Oculus is the one that'll be appealing it. Polygon has it right.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio24d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing24d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit24d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing24d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

To be fair, there are also human made games that release and lack any fun at all either.

jznrpg27d ago

But all of the great games have been made by humans

jwillj2k427d ago

One is by choice, the other is a feature.

PRIMORDUS27d ago

Guild Wars 2 been playing for 14yrs, 1st beta. This is just one company I support, Arenanet and NCSoft, even though I torrent, there are a few PC companies I will buy from. "PlayStation’s Horizon MMO spin-off, Horizon Steel Frontiers." I feel this will be good, NCSoft is a good developer/publisher.

CrimsonWing6926d ago

It’s a tool. Use it elevate things and get it done faster. I’m sorry but not every game made by humans is good. If this can help things, then I fully embrace it.
