New performance mode boosts Switch mobile clocks by 25 per cent

Digital Foundry:

At this point, the spec story may well have run its course, but in the run-up to launch, this is actually where things get really interesting. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild may well be the most ambitious mobile title ever made, and a great indicator of how developers will scale experiences between handheld and docked Switch configurations. Is resolution the only compromise? Next week, we'll have a full hardware review, plus detailed Zelda Switch and Wii U analysis, and we look forward to sharing our results.

Almost 3 hrs for battery mode that's sucks

3407d ago
wonderfulmonkeyman3407d ago

It's pulling the same battery life, at minimum, as most heavy 3DS games, yet the stuff the Switch can play, like BotW, is quite a bit more power-hungry than even the heaviest of 3DS games.
I wouldn't say that sucks by comparison. I'm actually surprised it can pull that off without overheating...

Scatpants3406d ago (Edited 3406d ago )

3 hours is fine with me. It's about what my Vita gets and my gaming sessions are almost never anywhere near 3 hours, although I could see myself playing Zelda for that long. You can bring a backup battery with you to charge it when you're not using it. Hopefully the switch will charge via USB, if not, that sucks.

3406d ago
pcz3406d ago

if the battery life was 15 mins you would find a positive

C_Ali883406d ago

And gamespot mentioned playing BOTW 5+ hours with it plugged in.... In a world with billions of cellular phones that constantly die it's not a problem to find charging solutions. This argument has been proven WEAK.....

shadowraiden3406d ago

3hrs of this kind of content. even $800 phones last 2-3 hours running the top games on them and their crappy little mobile games so dont know why anybody would expect longer and this is 3hrs playing BoTW with everything turned on(wireless, full brightness etc) so turn off those settings and you could easily make it closer to 4hours maybe even longer if at lowest brightness which considering its BoTW is a good amount of time.

thisismyaccount3406d ago (Edited 3406d ago )

...well with the add. 25% boost in portable mode, it is probably lower now too.

before the boost
~3h to 5h at 307mhz (100%)
after the boost
~2.5h to 4h at 333mhz (125%)

What we have then is a very powerful, well built handheld that gets a considerable boost when docked. Drawing comparisons with full home consoles is just stupid. This clearly isn't a full home console.
Its more capable than Wiiu in handheld mode which I think anyone will agree, is impressive.

vickers5003406d ago

"Drawing comparisons with full home consoles is just stupid."

Tell that to Nintendo then, not us. They're the ones calling it a home console.

If you're telling us to look past what Nintendo is saying and read between the lines, then you're essentially calling Nintendo liars. Or stupid (your words). Which I wouldn't disagree with at all in either case.

C_Ali883406d ago (Edited 3406d ago )

No you call Nintendo what it is, the same as Sony and Microsoft. A business/Company.. They will not actively stymie 3DS sales by saying it's successor has arrived "so no longer buy games that are currently in development or imminent release for the 3DS... "Because you know switch is here"... That would be foolish business...

That being said I agree, if you call it a home console it will be compared to current home consoles and in that respect the Switch is not in a very favorable position. They could possibly market 3DS as a lower budget parental option for kids and the Switch as a more adult oriented home console experience on a portable... Which I believe is what they are trying to do, ultimately. Nintendo has always stated that portable games have different objectives in terms of development than that of console games, play time sessions, game size, hardware limitations, game mechanics etc.. In terms of the Switch the paradigm has shifted to where we have two portable consoles and Nintendo is trying hard to differentiate the experiences between the two. To 1) Maintain any potential sales the 3DS may currently have with its current momentum, 2) To build momentum for the Switch beyond launch until an acceptable user base has been established.

Buuuut IIRC DS wasn't supposed to succeed the Gameboy but it ultimately did, as I believe will be the case with the Switch and 3DS.

shadowraiden3406d ago

nintendo havnt once used "home console" as a way to describe it. they have said it can be used at home on the TV but didnt say it was a "home console"

its clear this is the true form the Wii U was going to be but technology wasnt there yet its merging of handheld and home entertainment which guess what is the direction were going in.

Or you could just not be a moron and learn to think for yourself. One look at the thing and anyone with a mind of their own is able to see its a tablet.

Tablets this time next year will be more powerful. With a better range of games.

SockeyBoy3406d ago

With Angry Birds 4 and Crossy Road 3, yaaay.

shadowraiden3406d ago

yet none of those games will even come close to being anything more than mobile games which lets face it at best are cash grabs to try and get you to spend.

welly3003406d ago

I agree, might be a dozen console quailty games but that is changing...as the hardware improves that will change. I see nothing in the switch that would make me want one but thats my opinion. If you love cute cartoon games then go for it.

It will most like DOMINATE JAPAN. Which means we will have A LOT of Japanese titles coming to the Switch.
IF it dominates Japan...

Just a hope of mine, I am more of a fan of Japanese games. Dark Souls 1 still hasn't been eclipsed by anything released in recent years IMO.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle57d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
