Game company seeks to block Facebook from using virtual reality code

Video game publisher ZeniMax Media Inc., which earlier this month won a $500 million verdict against Facebook Inc.’s (FB.O) Oculus virtual reality unit for unauthorized copying of computer code, has asked a federal judge to block Oculus from using the code in its products.

The greed is unreal... They're still bitter Carmack got found not guilty.

Being found not guilty and not being guilty are two different things. The matching lines of code were there and Carmack wiped 92% of his drive for a reason. When I see an animal that looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck I call that animal a duck. I gamed Carmack's work from day one and like Id products on which he worked but this just reeks.

R_aVe_N3356d ago

I would have to agree with you here Carmack pretty much had his hands in the cookie jar, and got caught. I really can't believe he actually thought he would get away with it.

Activemessiah3355d ago

I think you missed the part where not being found guilty means you're not guilty... there is no place for acting like a cowboy and believing what you want to believe against facts and reality.

morganfell3355d ago

I think you missed the part where guilty people do not always get convicted, especially in the light of serious evidence that contradicts innocence.

IamTylerDurden13356d ago

Right, bc he and Oculus are so innocent...

lodossrage3356d ago (Edited 3356d ago )

I feel sort of bad for facebook (can't believe I'm saying that)

They bought into Oculus and now they have this hanging over their head. Combined with the fact that the VR is growing very slowly and they aren't even industry leader would have me second guessing my purchase if I were facebook.

Zenimax already won the 500 million dollar judgement for the broken non-disclosure agreement. So there's a good chance they can win this one too.

Cobra9513356d ago (Edited 3356d ago )

When was the last time there was a permanent injunction granted against a major product from a major corporation?

Take your time. (It's not a trick question. The answer is very short and easy.)

Edit: This is all still about money. Zeni want even more. That's all.

lodossrage3356d ago

Apple got one over on Samsung that comes to mind:

https://www.macobserver.com...

There are others so if you're trying to say it doesn't happen, you're wrong.

IamTylerDurden13356d ago

Zeni wants retribution, and rightfully so. Everybody knows that the Oculus situation stinks and that Carmack is not innocent.

Cobra9513356d ago (Edited 3356d ago )

You folks are naive if you think that this is about anything other than money. With this injunction threat, Zenimax are seeking a favorable settlement on royalties, on top of the unearned half a billion smackers that they finagled in court already. No one benefits from killing Occulus outright (which a permanent injunction would do). Business is like war, and Zenimax are waging it quite effectively. Facebook are big boys, though. They can take care of themselves.

Edit: @lodossrage:

You're technically correct, but it's moot:

"Apple finally won an injunction in its years-old patent infringement fight with Samsung on Monday. The ruling is a legal win for Apple, although it has little value in the retail space because it covers products Samsung no longer makes."

I guess I should have asked a different question: When is the last time a major product from a major corporation got removed from the market by an injunction? I want to say "never", but you know what happens when someone says that.

lodossrage3355d ago

@Cobra951

Nubya got one over on Tommee that forced Tommee to stop sales of some of their products worldwide. And both Nubya and Tommee are major corporations.

It'll likely get settled and facebook will end up paying zenimax licensing royalties to use the code. There is more money in that for Zenimax for the long haul. Only reason they wouldn't is if they can't make new code for the offending parts of the program. That'll take time though, and it would be very bad for the users if that happened. It could also stall any adoption of OR, because essentially, it means that no game development could proceed if it uses any sort of the offending code.

It's a mess though no doubt.

Hope they get the injunction, it seems quite obvious that Oculus was built on lies.

Sounds good. Here's hoping it goes through.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing6d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster926d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit6d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing6d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster926d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
