Mass Effect Andromeda: This ain't your daddy's space opera - CNET

Remember when J.J. Abrams rebooted Star Trek with younger actors, a brash, rockstar vibe and a whole lotta lens flare? Mass Effect Andromeda feels like that.

Kreisen3371d ago (Edited 3371d ago )

ME1 was often times very slow and would focus on tension building, exploration etc instead of shootouts. It drew inspiration from some of the older Sci Fi material, which is for the most part pretty dark. Tone wise the first game had more in common with something like Alien more then the the goofy Star Trek.
Devs behind Andromeda looked at ME1 for inspiration sure, but only for things that fit their vision of delivering a better action game.

KingKionic 3371d ago

"The first thing that struck me, aside from the J.J. Abrams "Star Trek" vibe, was that Andromeda's graphics are merely OK. I guess BioWare games have really never set a graphical bar, but I kept thinking how much prettier the similar Horizon: Zero Dawn was when I first played it. "

Well thats disappointing.

Seems bioware wasn't trying to push visuals like DICE.

The_Sage3371d ago (Edited 3371d ago )

To be fair, Horizon Zero Dawn, nor any Dice game are anywhere near as large in scope as what this will be. I read that each planet will be larger than all of Dragon Age Inquisition. If that's true, I can cut them a little slack in the graphics department.

KingKionic 3371d ago

I did not know the game was that big even though it isnt open world. Im very excited to see Mass effect make a return.

morganfell3371d ago

Why? With current advances in terrain streaming the days of cutting slack for a title in the visuals department due to map size is a thing of the past.

The_Sage3371d ago

Morganfell...

That's not even true if we were talking randomly generated, but, if you read the article, that is not how this game is done. All of the assets are there. Each planet has its own ecosystem. Plants, animals, mountains, rivers, weather.... That's a lot for the engine to deal with. It's like the game has 20 GTA Vs in it.

morganfell3369d ago

Who is talking random? I am talking fixed systems as in real world terrain. You should see what things like Titan Vanguard can do. Even Unreal 4 can stream fixed preset terrain. No reason MEA shouldn't.

So many comments on how ugly the game is and how badly character animations are! I am very surprised! DA:O was ugly, but ME3 looked alright and the 4k vids looked amazing! And they had great characters last gen, so I wonder if the new engine is an issue. Though Frostbite usually makes pretty good looking games.

They are a month out and Horizon is coming. If it's buggy and looking like a lost gen game, I wonder why they brought 100 journalists in to play it?

For All Its Flaws, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Approach to Romance is Something ME4 Can Learn From

While Mass Effect: Andromeda was let in several key areas, one of its approaches to romances is something Mass Effect 4 should consider revisiting.

I hope Mass Effect 4 ignores the inferior prequels and instead closely follows the far superior Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition.

anast485d ago (Edited 485d ago )

Mass Effect 4 should just make Mass Effect 1 but better with current tech. Fans would be happy. As far as romance, they should take notes from the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Ristul485d ago

Later Bioware games have to little build up. You can have a normal conversation and all of a sudden BAM! The character you talk to becomes super flirty.

TricksterArrow485d ago

Reminds me of Baldur’s Gate. I wanted to practice some magic and Gale made it super weird. Not even gonna mention Astarion.

gold_drake485d ago (Edited 485d ago )

iii dunno about that.

the only really great and funny dating partner, is that outlaw guy anyways haha he was funny as hell.

other than that, i found every character to be very annoying.

Shout out to Keri the Asari reporter. Current relationship status be damned as she's game either way. Anything for a good story. 🤣

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast527d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine527d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast527d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman527d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast526d ago

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

BioWare Thinks Mass Effect Andromeda Was Better Game Than Reception Suggested

BioWare thinks Mass Effect: Andromeda was a better game than what reception suggested; taught the studio not to shoehorn open-world without any meaningful content in it.

thorstein562d ago

I played it and it wasn't as bad as people said. Is it in the 8-10 range? No.

It's a 6-7, which means it's a solid game.

LordoftheCritics562d ago (Edited 562d ago )

Veilguard and Andromeda are of similar level to me.
6 to 6.5 ish

Though I think i enjoyed Andromeda's combat and sense of scale a little bit more.

XBManiac561d ago

Veilguard has better graphics.

neutralgamer1992562d ago

I agree with you It was a 6.5 type game. Gameplay was solid everything else was lacking. Playing at launch with all the issues was just absurd. EA could have let the developers keep patching and fix the game but they stopped just like they did with anthem. It’s crazy to think multi billion dollar publishers can’t afford to keeping patching their games get medium size developers can support the game for years

But when you have android wilson running the company what else can we expect.

OtterX562d ago

Except 6-7 doesn't translate as solid. 6 means a bit flimsy, but still good/enjoyable if you can look past the flaws. 7, a little less flimsy, and enjoyable. 8-10 would be "solid".

But I get your point. I skipped the game entirely, so I don't have an opinion on it.

H9562d ago

I played this game back when I wanted to give every game I bought a fair chance and finish it, it was the reason why I stopped doing so, god the game was bad

TheNamelessOne562d ago

I actually enjoyed Andromeda. It wasn't a 10/10, by any means, but I played it years after the fact, after a lot of patching, and I had a good time with it.

anast561d ago

Same, I enjoyed it too. I might even replay it soon.

TheNamelessOne561d ago

Might do the same, honestly. Went through the trilogy a couple months back.

raWfodog561d ago

I liked it as well, and also played it for the first time over a year after it was released. The original trilogy was a better story overall IMO but I still enjoyed Andromeda.

lellkay562d ago

The game is so unbelivably bad, it's laughable.

pwnmaster3000562d ago (Edited 562d ago )

It really wasn’t. Well for me nd I’m a big fan of the series.
Was it mass effect standard? No
But overall I thought it was a decent game.
6-7/10.

Armaggedon561d ago

You might want to try playing a truly bad game. Go boot up two worlds or gollum to get the perspective you need

MatrixxGT561d ago

Wow, two worlds…red ringed my 360.

Armaggedon561d ago

Lol. Its one of the only games that I have experienced buyers remorse with. The only one I can think of is riders Republic.

matt139562d ago

So delusional, the title was an embarrassment to the original trilogy. it’s the equivalent of 2042 to the battlefield franchise.

thorstein561d ago

2042 had a redemption arc and what exists now is a pretty good FPS.
