Nintendo’s CD refusal pays off

In the 1990s the former maker of playing cards Nintendo faced much mock when it decided against using CDs on its Nintendo 64 system and stuck with expensive and (in comparison) lower-capacity cartridges.

Playstation called, they said no it didn't.... not at all..

zeal0us3374d ago (Edited 3374d ago )

Only a blind fool or diehard Nintendo fan would say it paid off.
Catridges was the archilles heel for n64. Too early to say for the switch but with limited internal storage will force consumers buy larger storage device.

NecoTehSergal3374d ago

Careful, Nintendo fanboys are extra sensitive these days, if the article got flooded with them you'll be downvote-spammed by many of them - and none of them will be able to respond with logic :(

@Big - Aye, I've been around these parts for over 6 years. Seen the tides of it being full of Xbox fanboys, to Sony fans, to PC Elitists - and of course the obvious observation and my knowledge that Nintendo fanboys on this site stick in groups. You don't often see Nintendo fans on many pages, am sure you mostly would claim "It's mostly Sony" but trust me, when you find particular 'Hot Pro Nintendo' or 'Hot Anti-Nintendo' pages on front page? The Nintendo fanboys swarm to it like flies to manure. Once there? Say ANYTHING BAD ABOUT NINTENDO and they will eat you ALIVE. They are docile up until you shit-talk Big N, then they become the most hostile and degenerated of all fanbases. Only ones that can stoop to worse lows is Bioware fans.

@XB1ps4 - Nope. I have good memory to the long history of this site and those who occupy it.

gangsta_red3374d ago

If you see any of these mythical Nintendo fanboys make sure you shoot them with a knock out dart, tag them and then release them back into the n4g wild because I havent seen these "flooded" beasts in a long time here on N4G.

NecoTehSergal3374d ago

@Gangsta - I guess my demeanor of being provocative helps lure the animals out from their natural habitat of the Nintendo Den/basement....

How I categorize the 4 differences is, Sony fanboys are the cockiest, Xbox fanboys are the most ignorant, PC fanboys are the most narcissistic, and Nintendo fanboys are the most deluded to reality.

This article was talking more about how it payed off for the consumer. not how it was actually something that helped Nintendo.

No it didn't. They created their worst nightmare, PlayStation who are the Console leaders in the industry.

Godmars2903374d ago

After how many years?

Or should I say decades?

Freaking decades!

Nevermind that Switch has yet to come out, so nothing has been proven.

Not that it shouldn't happen, but Sony has no incentive where MS, with their online agenda, does.

WeAreLegion3374d ago

No. Screwing over Sony backfired and continues to backfire decades later. Huge mistake.

rainslacker3374d ago (Edited 3374d ago )

I actually think that Nintendo made the right decision to not partner with Sony, because Sony's terms were quite heavy handed in Sony's favor.

However, nintendo maybe could have renegotiated those terms, or at least not have gone the route of rejecting the platform publicly without Sony's knowledge, only to partner with one of Sony's competitors....which itself eventually fell through to for some reason.

Basically, Nintendo could have handled the situation better, but it's not like Sony were saints being chided.

WeAreLegion3374d ago (Edited 3374d ago )

You're totally right. Sony wanted too much out of it. But the only way the PlayStation came to fruition is because of how Nintendo handled it. Kutaragi was on a mission after that. And even the suits at Sony were tools about it for the longest time.

rainslacker3373d ago

Yeah, but Kutaragi was always on the mission, even with Nintendo. The suits at Sony proper had no interest to begin with, but were OK with partnering with Nintendo, likely because it meant they sold hardware. I don't think they had much interest in being a major player in the gaming market though. After the fall out, they were even less interested.

That's why Kutagari went to Sony Computer Entertainment instead, and they were receptive, and the rest is history.

The original deal with Nintendo is that they would hold publishing rights to any game released on the CD attachment. This would include Nintendo owned IP's. That is why Nintendo backed out.

It's one of those parts of gaming history a lot of people don't really know about....even when they were around during that time. Same way most people don't know that MS hand was forced to release the 360 early because of the way NVidia was trying to screw them....although MS should have had better foresight to lock in a price that would go down over time, but that's another story.:)

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio22d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing22d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit22d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing22d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
