I like how people are disagreeing. Take the battery out of your phone. Stab it. Watch it smoke (at least) if not catch fire. (or just look up a youtube video.) Now what do you think happens to all that energy if there is something containing it for a while but that isn't strong enough to contain it properly? Think dry ice bomb.

Now look up the amount of energy that can be contained in a lithium battery can (on the high end) rival that of compressed hydrogen, which we all know causes big explosions if you set it on fire in a sufficently enclosed space.

The plain and simple truth is that such batteries can easily be put in an enclosed space to release much of their energy into a pressure vessel and that pressure vessel can be coxed into releasing all that energy at once, in the form of an explosion, and that they catch fire if you stab them means they release this energy fairly quickly if you prod them into it so you wouldn't be waiting long. IE, you can do something like wrap them in tape (create a pressure vessel) and rupture them to create an explosion.

In Canada, they banned that phone from getting onto a plane, and were kicking people off of the flight if they had that phone.

Glad to see somebody else who actually paid a lick of attention to the situation.

Also from Samsung said that the batteries that had the faults were the ones made by samsung.
