Are Sony Working On A New Handheld?

Sony have been in the handheld market with the PSP And PS Vita for years, but sadly both have met their demise and are no longer in production. Is this all about to change? A NeoGAF user named “ponpo” spotted that this new patent was originally filed in 2015, but it wasn’t public knowledge until very recently. Here are the images of the potential device:

i always believed they will have another handheld. they are burdened at times with tradition and want to utilize their ip's as much as possible.

bouzebbal3388d ago (Edited 3388d ago )

After my painful experience with vita, I'm sure I'm not gonna support them this time.
They have an amazing and very capable console but they somehow let go of it.
I still don't understand why.

It's an idea that actually makes sense if Nintendo only stay on the market with switch. A fully dedicated handheld by Sony will allow them to rule the handheld market.

naruga3388d ago (Edited 3388d ago )

^^ @bouzeball exactly that ...i bought it also (now serves as my prestige portable PSX....) ) ..why the fk they ditch it? it was perfect from every aspect and they left it die leaving the lame 3DS reign supreme...if they decide at the end make a new portable and doesnt at least announce (even before launch) -Monster Hunter( proper entry) and some games at the same quality level as GRush ...i cannot for any reason trust them again ....

I don't know. So many studios that developed for Vita were moved to PS4 projects. If they release another handheld they risk splitting their development studios and facing the problems Nintendo is having with their first party support. The ways around it that I can see is to make a handheld focused almost entirely on Japanese support and making one that has first party games predominately games ported from the PS3 and PS4.

That being said, we're in a bit of an interesting situation. It is conceivable that during the PS5 years, when 4K will be pretty common, a handheld could be made that played literally the same games in a lower resolution . . . Sort of like what there is now with the PS4 and PS4 Pro, except the Pro would be a home console and the PS4 would be entirely a handheld. I would think that when native 4K happens on consoles a handheld could run pretty much the same games in 720p.

freshslicepizza3388d ago (Edited 3388d ago )

funny thing is sony said early on they did not want another portable console like the psp and more of a handheld platform with unique games but that is exactly what the vita turned out to be.

sony would be smarter pushing their playstation now services and adding ps4 games to it that can be played on tablets and the pc but they see that as a conflict to ps4 hardware sales which is why the service is being run to the ground.

XanderZane3388d ago

They should support the handheld that's out on the market first because thinking about bringing out a new one. The PSVita just need more exclusive games, just like the PS4 is getting. If they supported the PSVita like they do the PS4, they wouldn't need another handheld.

if ps vita used normal micro sd cards it would be the best handheld ever..

Takwin3388d ago

This is the #1 reason it failed. Two is the drop-off in support from Sony, but my god those asinine, expensive proprietary memory cards.

IamTylerDurden13388d ago (Edited 3388d ago )

No. That really isn't true. Sony tried, they put out big exclusives and attempted to make it successful but the problem was that North America just never gave a damn about the Vita. Why do u think the drop-off in support happened? Bc it wasn't selling, particularly in NA. It's not like it was selling and Sony backed off and that's what doomed the Vita. For whatever it just never caught on in NA and that is what screwed the Vita, but tbh it has found a comfortable little niche with great 3rd party support. It isn't entirely dead.

Deadpooled3388d ago

@Tyler

Having consumers spend money on top for things that should be with the system from the start like memory, is what started the bad rep and then the lack of sales after the launch total. Vita definitely had game projects prepared but after the launch incidents then the lack of advertising contributing to it further, projects like Bioshock Vita, Gran Turismo Vita and GTA Vita didn't get the go ahead. However I do agree that the 'fake news' catchphrase of "Vita has no gamezzzzzzzzzzzzz" BS from despicable trolls and fanboy wars was another factor, Vita had plenty of games available from launch with 30 games ( http://blog.us.playstation.... some in that link like Gravity Rush and that Silent Hill game released later) but I think if they were spaced out over months it might have been better and dispelled that myth.

The Vita was clearly ahead of it's true time which was a few years later with the PS4, simply because of Remote Play and completing the Circle of Life.

jznrpg3388d ago

Totally agree, thats the one complaint I have 100$ for a 64gb card right now , besides that I love the machine , i still play oy every night possible before bed. Tons of jrpgs on ot , currently play Exist Archive

Gardenia3387d ago

Knowing Sony they won't make that mistake again. Just like the difference between PS3 and PS4, they would make a new handheld more developer and user friendly

demonicale3388d ago

The bigger question is will anyone ever trust Sony again after the Vita?.

CrimsonPheonix3388d ago

You kids these days seem to think one failure means never try again.

DillyDilly3388d ago

Its two failures in the handheld business for Sony

demonicale3388d ago

Us kids?, at 33 i think i'm past the kid stage.

One failure?, so you're not counting the Move control pads and the PSVR that is going the same way as past Sony products then. At this point in time you can't trust Sony with any new hardware apart from Playstation.

@TheRandomOne

Again please educate yourself before you keep making yourself look stupid. Google is there and use it. They where far from failures.

I will.
Even when the Vita isn't supported by Sony is has a large library & some great games coming.

ALMGNOON3388d ago

The Vita was a great handheld the only problem it had was the games, it didn't have many games which is why it failed so badly.

IamTylerDurden13388d ago

Ppl are so misguided. Sony supported the Vita until it was clear that it just wasn't going to sell, and even then they just stopped developing AAA games. Eventually Sony stopped developing games all together but they still work to get 3rd party support, they still support it on PS+, it's not a legacy device yet. Vita released almost 6 years ago and we still get 2 PS+ games every month for it, it still sells tens of thousands of units every week in Europe and Japan.

Gio Corsi even had it up on stage at PSX announcing new games for it. Ppl act like new games don't even come to it, like it's a dead system. DQ Builders, World of FF, Attack on Titan, God Eater 2, Zero Time Dilemma, Steins Gate 0, Rocket Birds 2, Axiom Verge. 2016 had so many good games release on Vita, ppl are just clueless.

rainslacker3388d ago

If it's a good system without some of the baggage, and they release games for it and commit to support. Sure why not. It's not like Sony has a long legacy of failed consoles. Even Vita is still getting new games and be sold new in the market place. Sony support is lackluster, and they made mistakes with it, but it's a decent system that I haven't been disappointed with.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio32d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing32d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9232d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit32d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing32d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9232d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
