IGN: Mega Man 9 Review

Mega Man 9 is exactly what hardcore gamers were hoping it would be, as Capcom has come out of the gate with a game that's full of nostalgia and fan-service, but also one that truly does rival the best in the franchise's 8-bit roots. If you look at this game as a time warp into the NES era, it's one of the top titles out there, as it's hard as hell, somehow fresh in design (even though there have been well over 100 Mega Man games in 15 years), and simply a blast to rip through.

Presentation - 7.0
Graphics - 3.0
Sound - 8.5
Gameplay - 9.0
Lasting Appeal - 8.5
Overall -

pretty good review. I notice that graphics is low on there, i mean it is suppose to recapture the old 8 bit game, isnt it?

Marceles6442d ago

yeah, that doesnt mean they're considered good graphics these days lol. I thought they averaged it in the overall score though

StephanieBBB6442d ago

they should have done it like bionic commando rearmed. Not the gameplay part but the graphics part...

Nitrowolf26442d ago

i'll agree
this game is still a buy for me, but i would have perfered it in some better graphics like MEGAMANX.

"pretty good review. I notice that graphics is low on there, i mean it is suppose to recapture the old 8 bit game, isnt it?"

^Yeh they should really compare it to how it compares to other 8 bit games (since he is obviously comparing it to the 256bit games of today with such a low score). I myself was pretty happy with the review, ..but not so happy on the ignorance of the "graphic" score.

"yeah, that doesnt mean they're considered good graphics these days lol. I thought they averaged it in the overall score though"

^Obviosuly the game was made for the true "hardcore" fans, and not the new HD/online hard -*cough*- core gamers of today. This game was made for nostalga of yester-year, its supposed to mimic how it felt back in the day. Unless of corse you are too young to remember, which could very well be the case...and in that case than i guess i wouldnt really expect u to understand.

"i'll agree
this game is still a buy for me, but i would have perfered it in some better graphics like MEGAMANX."

^Fingers crossed, i REALLY hope another 'Megaman X' is in the pipe line. Maybe if enough people pay attentention to this game....in a good way.

Haha, awesome graphics for an NES game. the first Mega Man(Rock Man) was the first game I ever finished, I have to play this one, it should bring back some awesome memories.

MK_Red6442d ago

IMO, this game is just a cheap tactic from Capcom to exploit the nostalgic feeling of the old school gamers.

Games like Bionic Commando Rearmed are the classics worthy of time and money of gamers not these games.

ItsDubC6442d ago

Bionic Commando Rearmed is a remake tho, and that's why updated graphics and sound are a requirement for it. Mega Man 9 is brand-new.

CadDad6442d ago

....old school gamers looking for a nostalgic feel is exactly what the market bears? Catering to an untapped market share is a tactic, but not a cheap one.

This is the same kind of criticism the Wii recieves, but we all know how well it's doing.

I'll be buying this, as I still play the NES regularly, and even picked up the Mega Man 1-8 game for the gamecube awhile back.

ItsDubC, I know that and I'm not saying all remakes / returns of classics should have graphical upgrades or things like that.
The thing is, The Rearmed is more than simple remake and even without graphical upgrade, it has great multiplayer and mostly modern design.

MegaMan 9 is made with same NES bugs and weakness to "recreate" memories of the past. What's next? id making Doom 4 like original Doom? Look at Mario. I'm no fan of Mario but the reason this series has survived so long and is always such a success is because it's always going forward. After Super Mario Bros 3, Nintendo could have released a 2D Mario 4 just like the previous SMB games and kept making them until it reached 8. That's what Capcom did. They milked the MegaMan franchise and kept making the same game for most of the time while Mario moved forward.

Nintendo made Mario 64 which is based of all 3D platformers and modern games in general with innovations in camera and other departments. Later, when they finally decided to continue the SMB franchise, they made the uber awesome New Super Mario Bros for DS which is an advanced game with modern design.

MegaMan 9 is like a step backwards for the industry. I applaud it's classic graphics but not the dated design and keeping of the old NES shortcomings.

ChickeyCantor6442d ago (Edited 6442d ago )

MK,
You are just stretching it.
This is pure fan service.

The series pretty much whent downhill after 3
Same happened to the X series.
Now we have this free-2d-scrolling Megaman games and what not.

This is their true Megaman, as it should be nothing more to it.
NEs bugs, you can TURN THEM OFF.
its optional, the NES bugs are just to keep the real Megaman mood in there.

I am glad they did this, havn't played a freaking decent megaman in a long long time.

"MegaMan 9 is like a step backwards for the industry."
What? just one game is gonna give the industry a bad name, as of right now you are delusional.

Megaman X (the best game in the series) had a whole new and improved graphic design. They could have made the game have that design, but it would have been more expensive. THis is just a cheap way of getting more money.

MK_Red6442d ago

Thanks.
Many people think that I have a problem with MM9's graphics while it is the opposite and the graphics are the only part of the game that I like.

My main problem with that is the design and it being out-dated intentionally. That's just stupid. Should Mario return to original Super Mario Bros 1 on NES for SMB3? Of course not. Because modern design and progress is what makes New Super Mario Bros on DS such a great game. It's about moving forward not backwards.

ChickeyCantor6442d ago (Edited 6442d ago )

Megaman X =/= Megaman 1.
They feel very very different.

A new Megaman X game wouldn't be like this game.
It would be like the games they just released a couple of years back not 20.

Every game is made with a goal in mind.
This is nothing bad at all, you guys pretend this will cause the whole industry to fall down and limit it self to Nes gfx.

Let the people who love this idea have it, talking about progression and what not...You guys always pretend its the end of the gaming universe as we know it.

WTF Guys?

PirateThom6442d ago

If this had been X-style graphics, I would have been there in a flash. I have a NES, I like playing it, but I don't really feel the need to buy a new game that looks like a NES game.

SNES style graphics are more than passible still, Super Mario World is still as colourful as ever, but NES is nostalgia only and that's who they're trying to nab with this game. People who "remember" Mega Man.

Sena Kobayashi6442d ago

Maybe its me but I think every Megaman games are cool.
I wonder if people are going to qualify this game as a FLOP i mean it scored a 8.6 right? oh maybe they wont because its on both PSN and XBL and Wiiware.

Im of to another thread with my MAX SPEED!!!

Xbox Live Deals With Gold and Spotlight Sale Details 3rd-9th July 2018

Neil writes: "Let's be honest - the Xbox Live Deals With Gold sale last week was a bit rubbish. Yeah there were a few titles worth taking a punt on but the vast majority saw non-appealing discounts and the lack of super cheap pocket money games was noticeable.

We can forget about all that now though as the Deals With Gold and Spotlight Sale for 3rd-9th July 2018 is now in place and it is bringing a whole new range of discounts to both Xbox One and Xbox 360 players. Want to check out the full list of games on sale?"

Several of these games have been on GWG, Slime Rancher and Super Mega Baseball 2. Others are on Gamepass. There is an Anime sale going on with up to 75% off. Fifa 18 at just 15quid, although I'll wait until it's in the EA Access Vault and get it for free.
