Sony capitalized on a combination of nostalgia and historical preservation with its PSP, PS3 and Vita generation of hardware. The whole process made buying and playing old classics easy and affordable, and often gave Nintendo's own Virtual Console a run for its money.
The PS4 has virtually none of that, and by ignoring its line of classic games, it's leaving money on the table. What the PS4 currently has are compromises; half-steps that give the illusion of a celebration of its history but are effectively hamstrung by their own implementation.

In an exclusive interview with Game File, new(ish) Xbox boss Asha Sharma and Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty explain their vision for Microsoft’s gaming division
A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

totally agree we need an emulation for pS1/2 discs now! ....its a huge con for pS4 not not support the whole legendary library of predecessors and instead relying on asubscription service ...i said it even before its release , PS Now will be a failure
We need Ps1 classics with Trophies, Ps2 classics are amazing but Ps1 oh boy!
Consumers blame Sony for the lack of BC support when they should be looking in the mirror and at the economic collapse as the reason they couldn't afford PS3.360 launched in 2005 and consumers had no problem paying $299-$399 then(NO BC). Or paying these prices for accessories with some being way overpriced:
Faceplate ($19.99)• Hard Drive (20 GB) ($99.99) • Memory Unit (64 MB) ($39.99) • Wireless Networking Adapter ($99.99) • Wireless Controller ($49.99)• Play and Charge Kit ($19.99) • Rechargeable Battery Pack ($11.99)• Controller ($39.99) • Headset ($19.99) • Universal Media Remote ($29.99)• Component HD AV Cable ($39.99)• S-Video AV Cable (US) ($29.99)• SCART AV Cable (Europe) (24.99) • VGA HD AV Cable ($39.99)
PS3 dropped in Nov of 2006 and the world economy collapsed in 2007. Sony built a powerful system that played almost every PS1 and PS2 game. And the result was consumers, with a new mindset of buying cheaper products, shunned PS3 as being too expensive. Complaining about $599 US dollars when there was a $499 version. But that was too much.
To lower the price, Sony takes out the components for BC and other features, and consumers complained they weren't getting the fat PS3 for less when Sony was already taking a hit of $200 to get it in consumers hands. Consumers and developers told Sony *NO* on the Cell and the price so, this gen Sony went with a balance of power and chip set developers liked and a price consumers could afford.and since they sold millions upon millions of PS3's without full BC, Sony concluded consumers can live without it.
And , since PS4 is *dropping games* like Muhammad Ali and B-10s dropped bombs, there really isn't that much a need for BC.I could see if PS4 didn't have any games. But it almost has too many games creating back catalogs.I like BC, but if it matters that much, buy a PS1 or PS2. And PS now isn't BC. It's a streaming service that's also on **PC**. And there are over 450 games offered. And it's not Sony's fault for your internet being slow.
Anyway, since Sony has sold near 60 million PS4's without it, it doesn't seem to be a priority to them or to gamers. Enjoy all the ridiculous amount of new games and be happy. But the economy and consumers changed Sony's mindset. And we all benefited from it. Why look back when you can look ahead. When FFVII,GT,GOW, Detroit, Persona5, TLofU2, Shenmue, ace combat 7,Tekken7, Death Stranding, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc and fricken setera, you'll forget all about BC. And you got free games you can download and Indies to keep you company. All bran new.
This is a Sony news plant to get peeps to buy ps1 games on PSnow. What we really NEVEr needed was PSnow. Having to pay a monthly fee for the right to pay to rent is stupidly greedy. We dont pay Sony a monthly fee for the right to rent movies so why video games?
I've got a great console to play my ps1 classics on.... it's called a Sony PlayStation.
