I think you hit the nail on the head. I think this is the Big N's gambit for how to pivot as necessary for future console generations. As soon as the PS5 gen consoles land, Nintendo can repurpose the Switch as their handheld (they could already knock nearly $100 off the price if they take the dock & such out of their current bundle) and then launch a more powerful, dedicated home console *if needed*.

They could also potentially pull a Surface Book like move and change the base for one with a dedicated GPU if they need a middle ground without launching a new console (though this feels less likely). However, if the landscape proves it isn't necessary, then they can keep the mobile/console hybrid going and allow them to focus their development on one platform.

I believe the potential flexibility the Switch provides is why they are "thinking" about the 3DS successor, stalling to see how things fall out with the Switch before making any comments on its handheld plans.

_-EDMIX-_3403d ago

?

Well technically they could do that right now.

there's nothing stopping anyone from Simply purchasing the switch and never docking it on the television and essentially using it as a handheld.

Consider what you're saying right now is actually what I recommended they probably should have done in the first place simply have an option for a $199 SKU.

Like consumers by the accessory as a choice or bundled.

Not only is 199 an extremely attractive price it gives consumers the choice to upgrade to the accessory at their own leisure.

JamesBondage3403d ago

@_-EDMIX-_ but the 3ds xl costs that much, if they priced it that low, no one would buy the 3ds anymore(eventually)

_-EDMIX-_3403d ago

@james- well that's the point is to replace it in the first place.

3403d ago
_-EDMIX-_3403d ago

Lol

This company is all over the place.

So first there's a possibility that they're going to make a 3DS successor mind you that was Nintendo making those statements and now suddenly there is not going to be one lol

It is very hard to trust this company because it sounds like there's likely in fighting and there not really a hundred percent confident in the future of the company as they keep flip-flopping on the statements.

Something's telling me that they probably already have a 3DS successor in development and they don't want to lose switch sales.

I believe right now it's likely too late and consumers are already hesitant to go all in if Nintendo has plans to support something else

Moonman3404d ago

That's good to know. Just make a Switch Pocket if you want down the road but the same library of games. I prefer the bigger screen. This is getting good.

Way to give up on a successful line of dedicated handhelds

Moonman3404d ago

Read the article. They are not giving up portable gaming. They are "thinking" right now.

ninsigma3404d ago

The 3DS line would have to end eventually to be replaced by something new. With the switch, the replacement can be a replacement for both Nintendos home and portable consoles. I see it as a good thing. No point in splitting the devs between home and portable consoles when your home console is also a portable console. If they go this route, the library of games on Switch could be pretty large.

EddieNX 3404d ago

The switch is a dedicated handheld if u want it to be, its got the same battery life. Its just about 100 times more powerful and docks to TV, what's the problem?

_-EDMIX-_3403d ago

Agreed

I definitely disagree on being a hundred times more powerful lol

But I agree that in layman's terms this is simply a handheld back and play on the television so I believe they could simply just fuse the market by just making this they're dedicated handheld by having a SKU that doesn't have the dock or just making a smaller Slimmer version

There is no reason why this can't be there dedicated handheld ...Like zero.

I just don't like the idea of them fragmenting their market and making another product in which they start to play favoritism and begin supporting more than another product just work on one damn platform and call it a day

This is why it's a difficult for me to make the choice of purchasing this product or not because I keep having this believe that they're just going to make something else and I'm likely not even going to get the property that I wanted on that platform anyway.

You have to remember that I own a 3DS and I did not buy a Wii U.

And I truly believe that Wii U Gamers got the short end of that stick simply because I got to play lots of properties that I wanted on the 3DS and it makes me wonder if it's the right choice to purchase the switch if they indeed have plans for another handheld that might get more support.

porkChop3404d ago

They'll only make a 3DS successor if the Switch doesn't take off. The whole point is to have one system that caters to both markets, and have all their devs developing for one platform.

MyDietEqualsGames3403d ago

It's smart and could be huge if it takes off.

_-EDMIX-_3403d ago

100000% agreed.

We can only hope bud.

I don't want all these platforms from them for no reason, if they're going to have a hybrid system I believe they need to use it to their greatest capabilities.

If they fully understand that the switch in simply release without a dock and just be a handheld I believe they need to entertain that option because it does not help their consumers to be forced to purchase an accessory that they may not use.

I think they should come out with a 199 option that is slimmer smaller and only has the dock as an option.

How can they win in the market that they're not even prepared to fully support in the first place?

porkChop3403d ago

I think we might see a Switch Mini in a couple years. It would make sense for kids, but I doubt they'll sell it without the dock because that defeats the purpose of the console. I can see why people might want that, I just don't see it happening.

_-EDMIX-_3403d ago

I believe they're likely also going to have revisions in a smaller version but I believe ultimately they will sell it without the dock.

The purpose is also having the choice to choose so I see no reason to force the consumer to purchase an option that they may not even use in the first place

Consider their already selling it separately anyway and if somebody even wants the dock back then they're free to purchase that version, they're not hurting anyone but not including this in fact I would say they're losing more sales by forcing it.

You need to also remember that the purchase of the console was also the choice to choose where you play I believe that needs to extend and how they purchased the platform as well nothing will harm them by simply having it as an option.

Could I not buy the switch and simply never dock it?

I believe if they release it at 199 and lower the price of the accessory they will be extremely successful with the Endeavor

If you can play it on the go, I see no reason to Force other users to pay for an option they may not use.

There's nothing wrong with giving the option for both.

You personally might see the purpose of the platform to play on the TV but other users might disagree with you you have to remember it's called "switch" for a reason not TV Dock.

Consider the 3DS out of version that released with no 3D called the 2DS...

Are you entirely sure we may not see a version without a dock despite the accessory already existing?

Take-Two CEO Once Again Side Steps Grand Theft Auto 6 Price Point

Strauss Zelnick says price of GTA 6 is being carefully considered and that Rockstar is focused on "making the most spectacular piece of entertainment on Earth."

Kuma36d ago

If GTA 6 abandons everything that made GTA 5 great, it will crash and burn right out of the gate. GTA 5 was funny and not at all PC. My worry is that they will cave to the PC crowd and ruin the vibes.

Eonjay36d ago

They got freaking BBLs twerking on the top of trucks for the gram, the freaking Flordia joker, and dude running down the stree in their undies and you are worried about it being 'too PC'? The internet has runied gamers. It doesn't matter how non-PC they make the game, you will all listen to the grifters telling you not to believe your lying eyes lol.

gigoran836d ago

"Rockstar Games’ co-founder and former VP of Development Jamie King said he envisions GTA 6 as a game that’s “maybe not quite as edgy or quite as funny” as its satirical predecessors."

oh yeah, totally internet grifters spreading rumors...

blacktiger36d ago

That's part of the plan, they destroyed you but they need to destroy the shareholders? Only 1 shre holder is the true elite that don't care

1nsomniac36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

Meh.., if it’s above £55 I ain’t buying it.

Rockstar are genuinely not half the company they used to be. I was a die hard GTA fan I’ve purchased every game and expansion and spin off day 1.

My opinion of GTA6 is that I can take it or leave it. Not bothered. They burnt too many bridges.

DaReapa36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

So they're actually leaving the door open for an L.A. Noire sequel? Nice!

VaNdAl36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

He should just come out and say it already it's getting stupid it's going to be a 100 bucks $200 for the special edition🤡🤡; 29315;🤣♿

Storm2336d ago

I won't be getting this game until I can get it for $70. SHoot, I could wait for it to be even lower. I don't need the game that badly as my backlog is still huge and I am enjoying playing other things.

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn238d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn238d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown38d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay38d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay38d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac37d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger38d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300038d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde38d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde37d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
