I worry about games like this. There is no actual gameplay, it's simply a voice command game. It just seems gimmicky tbh, and VR is not a gimmick so i'm not thrilled about projects like this being associated with it. Why is MS so infatuated with voice command?
I begin to worry when I kept seeing more voice commands because I'm kind of confused if you physically control this game or is it sort of just like a demo about using voice command.
If you read the article the independent team that is making the game was looking for a voice command technology to use for the game. They tried some others that weren't good enough, Then tried MS Cortana tech and it worked like a charm. So its not MS building or funding the game, the team that is making just happened to decide on MS tech for that function of the game.
And what do any other VR experiences have to offer? As far as I have heard, HTC Vive has the most variety and best quality among all VR headsets in spite of reaching fewer people due to it's high cost
I am not convinced. This is typical bombshell hype tactics. Let's see this in viable consumer-ready form. It looks impressive, but I want to see this in everyday, practical use by someone who has nothing to lose by giving an honest opinion.
Edit: After watching it 3 more times, I am not feeling the voice commands.
you even created an account to make the same comment within the article, what a surprise. funny how some people dont have a problem with quick time events and scripted scenarios like a david cage game but all of the sudden because its associated with microsoft voice commands are bad?
The best VR experiences are the ones that are most natural to interact with. Using "hands" is immediately more immersive than using a control pad. Voice, if implemented well, would be the most intuitive and immersive way to interact with characters.
Your "worry" is completely unfounded. This Starship Commander game may not be your cup of tea, but voice interaction in VR is a very positive thing. Certainly more immersive than "press X to interact with this character".
But Phil said they will only do VR when it isn't gimmicky or when it isn't only "demos and experiments". http://n4g.com/news/1978350... This looks EVERYTHING like a demo/experiment.
So where is that VR for Resident Evil VII on Xbox???
It's a voice command game. Next time click the link there is a second video.
@chris235
It's not like voice commands are new. Or that all of a sudden people don't want to use them. People have been saying it sucks for a long time, It's a very imprecise method of control. It's part of the reason Kinect failed.
@moldybread
Quick time events and voice controls aren't the same. QTE's take skill and dexterity and if you press the buttons correctly what you expect will happen happens. Voice commands use a computer to interpret what you say and it never works reliably, especially for people who have accents.
There doesn't seem to be any gameplay there. Not sure why it's groundbreaking though as we already have pretty awesome space shooters on VR, unless they mean voice commands make it groundbreaking.
VR is not a gimmick? How many PSVR games are gimmicks? Almost all of them, lol. RE7 isn't, but then again it is a normal game which just has VR tacked onto it. Show me a game, built only for VR, which isn't a gimmick. There are hundreds across the different VR devices but you'll be hard pressed to name more than a handful of good VR-specific titles.
I'm not convinced that this will break the mold either, but it has a nice feel to it so far. It definitely needs to have more than voice commands, IMO, to be solid game though.
Voice commands aren't just a gimmick if done right. Binary Domain is a game which uses voice commands and while that feature wasn't flashed out or optimal in that game it was an integral part of playing it. If voice commands aren't the only option to control in this game it could be groundbreaking indeed.
Looks like a voice interactive game. I really hope you can also use the controller to interact with this game. I don't want a Space Ace game with voice commands only. The game may look great, but if the game play isn't great, then what's the point. Guess we'll have to wait for more info. Why is Microsoft introducing this game if its for the Oculus Rift & Steam VR and being produced by a 3rd party developer? Doesn't say it's for the Scorpio yet. Is Microsoft publishing this game? Just wondering how they are involved.
I wonder how much it will understand. Like if I say "F*** 'em up bad!" or "bang 'em!" will it know what to do? Can I also say "ludicrous speed" when warping?
Perhaps, but one of the big selling points of the software is that you shouldn't have to. It aims to interpret the speaker's intent, not just directly mapped commands.
http://uploadvr.com/microso...
It is an interesting area of research that goes very nicely in VR/AR. In not too many years we may be able to have quite natural conversations with NPCs. No gaming experience necessary.
@Tyler, don't bother making sense.
These are the same people saying games like heavyrain is just an interacting movie.
This "game" you just say commands and all of a sudden is " groundbreaking " .... 🤗
But a game like " resident evil vr " is just a gimmick. Lol, they can't make up their minds.
No, this game is not impressive enough to make me want to buy hardware just so i can play it. Do you feel otherwise? RE7, Rigs, Dirt Rally, Farpoint ect seem like better system sellers than this. Tbh, this game doesn't interest at all. The gameplay only entails voice commands... and that's it. A game like this would be terrible if it wasn't in VR, and to me that's generally not a good sign. It just seems gimmicky at a stage where VR needs to establish credibility, not a fan. We need more RE7, Rigs, and Dirt Rally, not this...
I guess, it's all about personal tastes right? I just find it strange how excited you get for other titles that are smaller and less ambitious or interesting than this. I would think this being a VR, story driven game would excite you in the same way some other games have.
I have to agree, even as a PS fan I just cant see myself using the PSVR. I see VR as nothing more than a gimmick and like 3D its a nice to have until the headaches kick in. I also agree that the only selling for this game is that its in VR.
Tell us more about the gameplay, you obviously got an exclusive behind the scenes look at it from the developers.
And all these people agreeing with you when you know crap about the game. This only makes my point that Xbox related news is just bait for the sharks to come snack on... Thats why I stay in cage...Lol.
I don't think this game is nearly as ambitious or groundbreaking as the title would lead you to believe. It is basically a movie or a choose your adventure with voice command. Voice command isn't groundbreaking at all. This idea is actually cheap and simplistic, each scenario will basically have 2, maybe 3 options that have already been pre rendered and u simply pick one. It's like a Tell Tale game with no free movement.
I do enjoy games of all shapes and sizes, it's no secret that i enjoy indies and sp/story driven games. However, i'm not restricted to a specific genre or style, my tastes are eclectic.
Uhhh... Didn't Sony walk away from Rigs? I mean, if the platform holder unplugs development and dissolves the studio that seems to me like even Sony themselves strongly disagrees with you.
I remember a long time ago I had a Commodore 64 as a kid and it had this game where all you do is talk to it no matter what it understood and held a conversation. It was loads of fun so if they nail the ability to understand everything and even tone, it will be cool , hope for some interaction and gameplay too
The idea is cool outside the traditional VR games. This is like having a choose your own adventure book with voice and video.
At least it has more potential interaction than regular 360 degree video.I like 360 video, but there's room for something inbetween.
Then, when you want real voice for VR, hopefully we get more games like this
https://m.youtube.com/watch... Cortana is already half way there if they use her for Scorpio.
And unlike this Star Citizen has a much bigger scope? Bigger than anything we have seen. So 5 years in development is not much considering that GTA 5 took 5 years to make, Witcher 3 took 4 years to make, a game like Last guardian was stuck for 10 years, even FFXV was there for 10 years, both of which could have been developed in max 3 years.
If you guys want to know more about they type of commands you can give here is the link to their site. the second video talks more about it. It reminds me more of an interactive story, but if you have VR at least their trying something new. http://human-interact.com/s...
Also the 10% wasted in console resources to run that damn thing until they removed it less than a year after launch. Nobody in Xbox camp complained about that one though.
Wait wasn't Phil saying a few months ago
VR games ''feel like demos and experiments.”
And now the media straight call this the most immersive VR games to date ?
Tbh I'm happy if Ms goes full into pushing VR just like it feels to me Scorpio power main justification is because of VR.
It's good for everyone if they do.
I'm super surprised, at least this is the first time he has gone back on what he said... oh wait.... he does this constantly.
The only reason he said that was because PSVR had just released and he wanted to damage sales and downplay the fact that Micrsoft had no VR of their own.
If they manage to make the voice interaction fluid and not half unuseable like most games that try to implement voice commands, then it could be kind of neat.
OTOH, if they don't have some sort of Wing Commander dog fighting type thing, seems like a waste given how much interaction there seemed to be within your ship and flying around and stuff. Just commanding your squad or wingmen doesn't sound all that interesting, because I'd rather play a flight sim, instead of just watching it.
Gonna keep an eye on it though. Like the Wing Commander vibe, and do enjoy good interactive stories, and enjoy sci-fi games which don't involve some freak of nature space marines.
I'm not into VR myself, but they announced a tonne of windows 10 VR headsets in October for like $299 with nothing else needed. That and occulus and vive working with windows 10 I don't think they will make their own, they will let these others be compatible instead.
What I see is the future and I am all for it. How can we ever be truly in a virtual world if we can not engage in natural conversation with the npcs?
Do you all want to keep reading text? Do you want to speak to a npc and he gives you a pop up box with 3 choices of things to say so he can respond? Or just listen to the same reply that the npc gives over and over.
I agree. I use VC, dictate messages, and have Cortana search for stuff, every day, on my X1. A captain would bark orders, and expect them to be followed; therefore, I think it has potential to allow me to be captain "Kirkish", and that seems cool, to me.
What was this Star Wars kinect game called again ? This is even less immersive. Although I see some potential in voice command based interactive storytelling...if the AI and parser are smart enough. Imagine a Sherlock Holmes game where You really can ask individual questions, not just something that is premade.
in my opinion that is the best way to judge VR , it's impossible to explain the experience to someone that hasn't used it before , I always tell people that when they ask if VR is any good, you really do have to just try it there is no other way.
After trying it, its still a gimmick, novalty whatever. I dont see it catching on for main stream. I think 400$ is still too expensive and Ive told everyone that asks its cool but wait for a price drop or get it second hand.
Ok so Milo's Cousin?... Nothing against it, it's just a bit fantastical... Just listen to the commands and try to imagine the algorithm that would have to be in place to accurately convey what the player wants the AI to do.
Are we sure we're using the term "groundbreaking" properly? The concept of a space flight sim in VR is awesome, but they really haven't shown much so far...
Well this was a bit unexpected coming from MS. Interesting to see them support both Oculus and Steam VR. As noted by others this certainly seems to indicate that Scorpio will indeed get VR in some fashion. Given the trailer shows people with Oculus on their heads I think its a safe bet that it will be that partnership to come to Scorpio.
Ground breaking because you will throw your system down to the floor and risk breaking it after you've found out how much BS video mock-ups MS has been feeding you over and over again all these years.
Looks interesting. Steam VR and Oculus? Nice. I imagine it will be available on Scorpio too.
I wonder how much it will understand. Like if I say "F*** 'em up bad!" or "bang 'em!" will it know what to do? Can I also say "ludicrous speed" when warping?
If it allows you to curse than thats awesome.
Time to get one of the Win10 / Xbox one compatible VR headset releasing this year .
Not into voice command games but interested to know the extent of what it will understand.
