GameCube Virtual Console: Is this the 'Killer App' Nintendo is ignoring?

Nintendo has earned itself a reputation for being both wondrously creative, and woefully misguided, in equal measure. For every lightbulb moment reveal like glasses free 3D or mass market motion control, there’s Friend Codes and the Wii U gamepad to balance the scales. The same company that brought Shigeru Miyamoto out on stage at E3 with a Master Sword and Shield to announce Twilight Princess, also spent significant amounts of Yen on development of the Vitality Sensor. Now, plenty of businesses, both in and outside of gaming, have suffered from very public lapses in judgement. In Nintendo’s case, one could argue it also seems to be a part of their appeal.

Which brings us neatly to the Switch; Nintendo’s brand new hybrid console that is just under a month away from launch. For all the new IP and sequels being revealed, and the promise of home console gaming on the go, there is a widening gap in their PR messaging that is both frustrating and worrisome: Virtual Console. Specifically, the lack of any confirmation regarding its support at launch, how the account system will work, and what games will be available. Added salt in the wound comes by way of consistent rumours circling around GameCube titles making an appearance on Switch, something which we believe could be a genuine system seller for their new machine.

For a moment there I thought this had been announced! hee hee

Nintendo do need to hurry up and announce it though! Waheey!

JTGA3424d ago

I even excited myself! Yeah!

I can't believe we're still waiting on news from them. You'd have thought this would have been priority number 1...

MongooseGeneral3424d ago

dey havent anoucd da cubez support u noobz

StormLegend3424d ago

Yes it is! Nintendo is so stupid for not releasing Gamecube games. The switch would sell out instantly if we could play gamecube games in 1080p 60fps.

Now all of the sudden people want act like the GameCube was the greatest thing ever when it was ignored back then.

Just watch something similar happen to Wii U

Because the idiots who hated on it had no clue what they were missing. If you see that G4 episode right before Wii, PS3 and 360 came out. They had a GameCube episode, PlayStation 2 and Xbox episode counting down the Top 10 games on each system. Now, I used to watch Morgan Webb and Adam shade the GameCube as a purple lunchbox or whatever all the time and on the GameCube show they were soooooooo gushing, clearly loving the games (you can tell they enjoyed the ENTIRE top 10 games) and they went absolutely nuts for Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4 (their #1). They are so fake, loving the GameCube at home but hating it on TV because it was "the thing to do".

To Adam and Morgan: BYE, BYE BYE.....

that's actually the last Nintendo console I owned, rather own. I was thinking last night it would be nice to have some of those games re-released in HD. I kept the GC to play these games but it's so hard to go back in time playing standard def games unless it's NES, SNES or Genesis. Anyway, Nintendo already did Twilight Princess on Wii-U and Windwaker so those should be easy to bring to Switch. Double Dash, Mario Golf, Metroid Prime, Ikaruga, Smash Bros, Fire Emblem, even the Legend of Zelda Collection mastered in HD would be great. Though I doubt they'd bring the Zelda collection all on one disc. I pre-ordered the Switch and I know Nintendo isn't going to bring enough, again, so I'd love to see some GC classics and other games added to the library.

Moonman3423d ago (Edited 3423d ago )

I'll add...F-Zero GX, Luigi's Mansion, Eternal Darkness, Super Mario Sunshine, Animal Crossing, Viewtiful Joe, etc etc etc GameCube rocked!

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing55d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9255d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit55d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing55d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9255d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
