Why doesn't Nintendo "Switch" to becoming a Third Party Developer?

What is the purpose of the Switch when PS4/XB1, smartphones, and PC userbases all eclipse Nintendo's best case scenario of 78.86 million sales?

The obvious answer is that Nintendo won't do it because of their pride in producing gaming hardware.

I don't see Switch selling pass 79 million for various reasons, especially considering that there are many overlapping 3DS & Wii U owners that contributed to that overall total.

wonderfulmonkeyman3372d ago

No, that's just silly. If there was good enough reason, then Nintendo, as a business, would do it just like Sony and Microsoft would, especially if there was any chance of them making much more money.

The real answer is because it's a stupid idea to kill off hardware that will make them a profit when all is said and done.
Especially if doing so is for the sake of trying to sell to the fanbases that believe, fully, that Zelda, Mario, etc are not priority buys compared to the dozens of third party games that release so frequently outside of Nintendo's systems, let alone qualify as system sellers in terms of quality, and that they'll never measure up to stuff like Witcher 3, Mass Effect, etc.
It would be like the time Activision tried to sell Call of Duty to the Wii audience; larger numbers don't mean jack crap when the fan base doesn't care about the games in question.

Add onto that the fact that having Nintendo bow out would just be pushing us towards a monopoly, and you've got a recipe for disaster; with Microsoft making their games for PC's now, if Nintendo bowed out, then the only ones Sony would really have to compete against, are PC's.
And that's a tech race that Sony cannot win, meaning they'd eventually go into just contracting out software deals to PC, too, alongside any software deals that they could slap their names on as a publisher/funder.

The simple matter of fact is that Nintendo staying in the console races encourages more competition in the realm of making different hardware experiences. Despite the tech not being the most powerful, it's still a competitor because Nintendo's systems usually offer something others don't, be it in hardware or in games, and the other hardware makers admire Nintendo for good reason, just as Nintendo does them.

I honestly feel that 79M is surpassable for the Switch. All Nintendo needs to do is keep the content coming past this first holiday season, and continuing their advertisement efforts in the vein they've been doing them, while working on improving their online offerings to be more competitive in perks, or at least comparable to the other two.

cleft53372d ago

Why don't Microsoft or Sony switch to being a 3rd party developer? Such a stupid question considering Nintendo is constantly rolling money from one idea to another. A few "failures" on hardware doesn't change how strong Nintendo is going financially.

Eonjay3372d ago

I predict that Nintendo Switch easily outsells the Xbox Scorpio. Thats why.

Goldby3372d ago

comapring Cod on Wii to Zelda on PS4.... the hell is wrong with you Monkey?

Half the people who buy ps4s dont even buy Cod anymore, so why did u use that example.

why not use skyrim, it surely wont be selling that well.

What Pheonix and the author are trying to say is that if you are currently sitting in last place in terms of sales, and have had recent bad consoles sales. it may be better for them to "give up" their 13 Million fans in excghange for a potential of over 70 million fans (45 million ps4s, 20+ million x1s and the 13 million nintendo fans.

When they bank on Zelda, and Mario to sell their hardware it only shows lack of confidence in their consoles, when Reggie is stating that they are banking on the same luck from Wii days that is a huge red flag for business.

Switch isn't even gonna hit 50 Million.

thehitman13983371d ago

Think you might need a new keyboard after that thesis, lol....

_-EDMIX-_3371d ago

Why doesn't Sony or Microsoft go third-party? Will because they sell enough consoles consistently that they don't need to do that , Nintendo is looking at selling less Hardware again.

It is Nintendo that now only has a portable on the market and it is Nintendo that now needs to consider putting all their efforts in the mobile market in Market that they've actually sold 100 million less devices in than the previous generation.

If they continue to sell less devices on the handheld front they have will have no choice but to Simply become a third-party publisher because the concept of making money in business has more to do with selling the software which for a fact makes more money.

There is no logical reason why a company will spend more money to create Hardware only to receive less money from software.

it's illogical and doesn't actually make sense it's actually why no one on here even has a solid reason why any company would continue to Hemorrhage money that way.

do you believe Nintendo could sell 36 million copies of Mario Kart on any of the platforms that they have coming up? If the answer is no then it begs the question why on Earth would they continue making Hardware if they're actually not even selling at their Max?

So spend more money to earn less?

The simple answer is Nintendo has been selling tons of hardware and software generation betrween their handhelds and home consoles! 3ds was a pretty good success with massive software sales so they have no reason to stop.
They're in a good position going forward with Switch

_-EDMIX-_3371d ago

No

For fact Nintendo has just sold their least selling Home console in the company's history.

For a fact the Wii U and 3DS sold extremely less than their predecessors a combined 190 million less users purchased their Hardware.

Sooooo no.

After the Wii U if the switch feels they actually have great reason to become a multi-platform publisher so yes they definitely have a reason to stop creating Hardware if they wants to continue making a lots of money.

What's the point of selling Hardware when software makes more money and your install base isn't enough for you to make the most money? Did you seriously just forget that the purpose behind their company is to make money not lose it?

Yet Nintendo was making games for IOS and Android.....🤔

Apex133372d ago

One of the most basic and stupidest things I have read today.

sinjonezp3372d ago

Goldby

That is the perfect point. You have a dedicated Audience of about 13-20 million users that typically buy first party titles at a high attach rate. Then you look at PS4 with a 50 million install base, Xbox with 30 plus million install base and PC , and Nintendo could make these titles look amazing in HD or 4K would sell like crazy!! You are looking at 20 to 30 maybe even 40 million more in software attach rate. Is the amount of money Nintendo making on hardware more than they would make in software by selling on PS4 Xbox PC ? That's the true question. Nintendo wouldn't have to worry about dedicated network integration, OS dedication, etc etc and focus on software development could prove to be a strong tangible solution in the long term.

Remember guys this is simply constructed opinions and discussions.

G20WLY3371d ago

"PS4 with a 50 million install base, Xbox with 30 plus million install base"

Run those figures by me again?!

wonderfulmonkeyman3371d ago

Nintendo's titles are all going to be in HD going forwards anyways, so that's a very moot point, and 4k isn't a necessity, it's a luxury.
And again, it's like CoD on Wii: Nintendo's games would have an attach rate so poor elsewhere that it wouldn't be worth the trouble.
The "dedicated users" for Nintendo exist on Nintendo systems, not on Sony or Microsoft systems, which is a major point a lot of you are firmly in denial about, even despite all of the evidence on just this site alone, in the form of hateful comments when anyone even comes close to mentioning that Zelda could be better than games like Horizon.
And no, @Goldby, it isn't a stretch to use CoD as an example, because it perfectly illustrates where the fanbase for CoD is. There are many millions of buyers on the PS4 for Black Ops 3, for example, whereas if that released on Switch, you probably wouldn't even see 1/5th of the numbers.
It doesn't matter how good of a salesman you are, if you try to sell ice to Eskimos, you're going to fail.
You have to know where your audience is.
And only open-minded multi-console owners and Nintendo gamers are going to buy Zelda either alone or along-side something like CoD or Horizon or Halo; PS4 owners and XB1 owners who only have one system would never prioritize Nintendo's games more highly than things like that because they have willingly shown that they aren't a part of the Nintendo audience.
If you'd like to prove me wrong, then prove to me that the majority of PS4 or XB1-only owners love Zelda so much that they'll pick up a Switch or a cheap used Wii U for it, instead of just outright ignoring its existence when something like ME Andromeda is right around the corner for them to spend money on.

hulk_bash19873372d ago (Edited 3372d ago )

Switch has the potential to be as big as the Wii and 3ds. So long as Nintendo pumps out their high quality exclusives and third party support is there. I see no reason for this console/portable hybrid to fail. With that said, im not getting a Switch at launch cause the one game worth playing is gonna be available for me to play on my Wii U. Definitely gonna be getting one later on down the line though.

hulk_bash19873371d ago

@EDMIX
Like i said, it has the Potential to be as good as the Wii and 3ds. I didnt say it was a guarantee. But as long as Nintendo doesn't drop the ball like they did with the Wii U, I dont see why it would fail.

_-EDMIX-_3371d ago

I mean not necessarily if you consider they're already making games for IOS and Android

If anything it would be the possibility of Nintendo still creating another handheld while still actually becoming a third-party publisher to make games on other platforms

Zeldafan643371d ago (Edited 3371d ago )

Why don't you want either of the other 2 to quit hardware when they ALSO have made games for phones and tablets? By your own logic we shouldn't have console makers at all.

_-EDMIX-_3371d ago

@zelda- because Sony and Microsoft actually consistently sell lots of Home consoles.........

Sooooo yea

Nintendo is the company responsible for bringing console gaming back from the crash in the early 80's. They have always made money which is something not many platform holders can say. A company doesn't have to sell the most to be successful. I'm not sure why that is such a hard thing for some gamers to grasp. Nintendo is content innovating on their own and creating gaming experiences like no other. Shouldn't gamers respect and encourage this instead of asking why they don't go third party? Among the big three, Nintendo is the only company that is dedicated to gaming. I can see them lasting longer in gaming than both Sony and Microsoft which have other avenues of revenue.

The 10th Rider3372d ago

Exactly. They just have to be profitable to survive. No one has to sell the most to stay afloat.

mcstorm3372d ago

Spot on @Death I also think the Switch will shock some people in how it sells.

King_Lothric3372d ago

Nintendo used to be the best in the market but now, as you are saying, they are OK with just surviving and making some profits out of underpowered and uninspired devices.

Back in the day, Nintendo fought to be #1
Today, Nintendo is just OK with surviving at #3 and that may be OK with new Nintendo fans but those of us who knew Nintendo back in the day, is very depressing to see what they have become. So much wasted potential.

GrimDragon3372d ago (Edited 3372d ago )

Absolutely agree. Almost as depressing as watching sega fall from grace.

prankster1013372d ago

Like GrimDragon, I absolutely agree. It's really sad that a leading company like Nintendo has been taken over by those who appreciate having fans who enable this sort of loser mentality and behaviour.

Yamauchi would never have allowed it. And as far as I am concerned, the minute he died was the minute the Nintendo that I loved ceased to be.

DoomPlague3371d ago

Speak for yourself. I've played their games since the 80s and still love their games, and critics do too. They still create fantastic games and they at least try different ideas with their hardware. It's just that they aren't trying to be the home of all "hardcore triple-A" games and gamers are somehow insulted by that.

Calling their devices uninspired seems silly too. The PS4 and Xbox One are practically the same devices as last gen just with more power. That's what I call uninspired.

And they aren't "ok with surviving." They were #1 in sales last gen and are obviously #1 in the handheld market. That's a win, even if it hurt them in the eyes of avid gamers.

Sirk7x3371d ago

Back then, the Japanese market was the king of game sales. Sony has adopted a Western sales philosophy, because there are much bigger markets outside of Japan. Nintendo seems to want to stick with selling to their home market first and foremost. Our cultures are much different.

So how is making a revolutionary new device with psvr thats majorly just for gaming not dedicated to gamining?

How is bring so many new games in one year alone not dedicated to gaming?

How is hosting a brand new expo 3 years strong in the middle of the winter just to showcase their games to gamers not dedicated to gaming??

You nintendo fan boys are the worst out of all fanboys

Death3370d ago

Sony has a dedication to gaming, but they do/did much more than game consoles. Sony also manufactured TV's, PC's, semiconductors, music players, laptops, phones, insurance, own multiple movie and recording studios along with televisions production studios as well. Nintendo does gaming.

As for PSVR being a revolutionary device, didn't Vive, Rift and GearVR hit shelves well before PSVR? Palmer Luckey seems to be the one that really pushed the VR that we have today.

_-EDMIX-_3371d ago

Which is why I believe there would be a fine addition to be a third party publisher.

there is no point to creating Hardware that people do not buy when the main point of business is to sell the software to the most people.

they will inevitably need to answer the larger install basis if they wish to make the most money I see no reason to accept making less...

Sirk7x3371d ago

You could say the same think about Microsoft and Halo. Wouldn't that make more sense for them to release on PS4 too? :P

_-EDMIX-_3371d ago

@sirk- except Microsoft actually consistently sells in regards to home consoles.

Mind you even Microsoft put their games on the PC because of the larger installed base but clearly they're not going to put their games on the PlayStation 4 because it's conflicting competition.

Microsoft has something invested in Xbox and PC in regards to the Windows operating system.

They do not have anything invested in the PlayStation 4 so they're clearly not going to sell anything on that platform.

Microsoft already has multiple Avenues to sell software to.

So your example doesn't necessarily make that much sense if you consider Nintendo does not own iOS or Android yet they're releasing games for those platforms ....

Nintendo needs to do such a thing because they do not have the install base to begin with

prankster1013371d ago

@Sirk - MS kind of do release their first party games on other platforms. Namely Minecraft which nets them bajillions.

ninsigma3372d ago

The same argument could have been made when PS4 and XBO released so I think it's a bit silly. They're bringing something cool to the market and I'm happy about that. Sure they've screwed up a fair bit with messaging and decisions but I think Nintendo should stay in the game if only to bring a sense of uniqueness to the market.

rjason123372d ago

You can say that about any of the consoles, "why doesn't so and so just exit hardware and make their games here"

These kind of articles are worse than port-beggars.

Moonman3372d ago

Because they made $569 million in PROFIT off of $1.5 Billion in sales last QUARTER. Really? This again? Talk about delusional.

Athos3372d ago

You have to remember that this site is basically a bunch of Sony fanboys in a circle jerk. Any other brand is trash

dveio2d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing2d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster922d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit2d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing2d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster922d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
