Demos have been around a very long time however, in recent years their number has dwindled. Is it time to replace them with a better system?

On a side note I find PS4 demo kiosks to be the best at retailers because it has far more titles to try out compared to 3DS, Vita, Wii U & XO. You can't even try out NS games at stores yet

Think that depends on where you are. Here in Ireland I tried out the Switch in store before buying and when on holidays in Berlin I saw some kids playing a Switch demo station in a tech store.

It's called early access, closed or open alpha or beta these days. Companies like to save costs on internal testing, and get honest public direct feedback.
The early access/alpha/betas are nice and fine UNTIL the game is released.... What happens if someone just got a console or PC that is capable of playing the game you want that has been released already? Early Access/alphas/betas are of no use since most of the times they are pulled. That's why the gold old demo should stay around.
