It's not a big surprise, all the things promised are the way Windows was already handling high resource processes. Microsoft is all about the hype. Lets just hope they don't cripple normal operations in order to make this feature seem better. It wouldn't be the first time they have done something like that.

It's not really a let down more than it hasn't been utilised correctly yet and likely never will be *cough* dx13 *cough* one reason is the following stated by Microsoft:

"The programming investment is significant, and debugging and instrumentation of the project should be considered from the very start: threading, synchronization and other timing bugs can be challenging."

And

"For a project that takes full advantage of the benefits of Direct3D 12, a highly customized Direct3D 12 game engine should be developed from the ground up."

Not many people will do that as it costs money so they usually use dx11on12 or use the minimum feature level of dx12 which is 11_1 or 0.

The engine I'm working on will support dx12 eventually or the next iteration depending on what goes down. But most people don't have the time investment to fully optimize for the API as the games need to come out at some point.

DX12 has barely been scratched by developers. The games being built from the ground up for it haven't really started coming yet. Every game that's released so far, has been converted to DX12, where it still uses a lot of legacy DX11 code.

I'm a huge PS fan, but I work with DX building tools, and what it can do is pretty great. unfortunately, right now, most devs are still either focusing on DX11, or doing ports to DX12 with mutli-build releases for PC. DX12 doesn't have much bearing on Xbox as far as I can tell. Some better pipeline techniques, but overall, most of the benefits already existed.

Just like all the other performance boosters, nothing noticeable to gain.

I remember before Windows 10. That with DX12 there was no need to wait on AMD or Nvidia to provide crossfire/SLI drivers to use multiple GPU's. They would just work with DX12 games. What ever happened to features like that?

It's about overall stability and system performance, not necessarily improving your FPS.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing17d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit17d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing17d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

To be fair, there are also human made games that release and lack any fun at all either.

jznrpg20d ago

But all of the great games have been made by humans

One is by choice, the other is a feature.

Guild Wars 2 been playing for 14yrs, 1st beta. This is just one company I support, Arenanet and NCSoft, even though I torrent, there are a few PC companies I will buy from. "PlayStation’s Horizon MMO spin-off, Horizon Steel Frontiers." I feel this will be good, NCSoft is a good developer/publisher.

It’s a tool. Use it elevate things and get it done faster. I’m sorry but not every game made by humans is good. If this can help things, then I fully embrace it.
