After reading the article I'm somewhat in the same boat with the author. PS2 was the last system I "had" to buy the latest/greatest. I still remember playing Final Fantasy 11 but still made time to play GTA San Andreas, Gran Turismo 4, and Street Fighter Alpha Anthologies. Now? The Division, log into Warframe for my daily (just recently got Prime Vigor on the PS4), and ESO for the daily provision writs. Then maybe an offline game if all my college homework is completed.

I've had more fun playing older games, and if things still continue the way they are, when I enter the industry I'll start with retro style gaming to remind gamers it's not about flashy graphics, paid dlc, and fanboyism; it's good storytelling, simple controls, and just having fun.

_-EDMIX-_3398d ago

Lol we are only about 3 years and less than one month into the generation buddy

Relax.

What's strange is you could still play Final Fantasy 14 , Gran Turismo sport to my understanding is releasing this year and we haven't even gotten a GTA 6 yet but we're getting Red Dead Redemption 2, so unless you've just been jaded in gaming technically speaking the sequels to the games that you even desire have either already released or are on their way to release.

Mind you, did you just seriously assume that fanboyism just didn't exist during the PlayStation 2 generation? Lol

No.

The same people that have no problem buying Street Fighter 4 times are the same people that have no problem purchasing it's a downloadable content are probably the same people that were Fanboys probably the same people that were going crazy over Graphics during the 16-bit era I don't know if you realized it or not but the people you've described this generation have existed through all the generations of gaming I'm not sure if you're even old enough to even realized the examples you brought up technically still existed during that generation.

People who literally bought several copies of Kingdom Hearts simply to get the extra content.

I know people who purchase the FES version of Persona 3, people who purchased multiple versions of Street Fighter 2.

So we're just pretending that companies did not sell post-launch content simply because the distribution method has changed? Lol

Ummm I think you're a bit delusional and maybe you haven't really been paying attention to the market if you haven't realized that downloadable content is simply replacing the extra versions or special editions or gold versions or what-have-you that used to release of games.

So we're just going to pretend that Kingdom Hearts Remix didn't exist? We're just going to pretend that there wasn't a version of Tomb Raider called gold with extra content? We're just going to pretend that Half-Life didn't have like a dozen versions of the same game? Lol

OK bud.

I'm 28 and I'm pushing 29 and I've been gaming since I was 4 years old and I very much remember those days very clearly.

Who's to say twenty years from now there's not going to be some 20 year old complaining about the generation and talking about the "good old days" when there wasn't a focus on "flashy graphics, paid dlc, and fanboyism"

Lol when on Earth did you speak for all gamers?

I'm sorry but I don't recall any time where such things did not exist within gaming as long as there's been gaming there has been companies looking to try to sell extra content, either repackaging the game with a subtitle like gold or special, I don't recall a time in gaming where we didn't have fanboys, I don't recall a time in gaming where you didn't have a select amount of Gamers going Gaga over graphics.

Or did you forget that the Nintendo 64 was literally named after a piece of Hardware to show off its 3D graphics?

Who cares? There will be no time where everyone 100% collectively agrees with you or me for that matter.

Irrelevant bud.

RpgSama3398d ago

I also remember my SNES days when I was a child, or my ps1/ps2 days when I was a teenager, of course gaming is never going to be like that, I had all the time in the world back then, I would never compare the wonder and excitement I had over something when I was a 14 year old dude when everything was the most awesome thing ever, than now that I'm 31 and have a life to live, work, relationship, bills.

Nightmar3Demom3398d ago

"Lol when on Earth did you speak for all gamers? "

I had to read @Tetsujin's post 3 more times and I still can't find where he's assuming that he's speaking for all gamers and not just stating his opinion.

BizarroUltraman3398d ago

Idk Ive been gaming since mid 80s. Altho yes there has always been fanboys. It was nothing, imo, like it is now. I remember friends and cousins alike always coming by my house cause I had all the consoles and we never argued about what system or games was best or nothing. We just had fun. After we would all just go play football, basketball and at night we play the king of games Olevio..

PurpHerbison3398d ago

What in the world of rambling did I just read...

Tetsujin3398d ago

@EDMIX

When did I say I was speaking for all gamers? My comment states a personal perspective, not speaking for everyone, so don't go assuming like you did in your response.

"What's strange is you could still play Final Fantasy 14 , Gran Turismo sport to my understanding is releasing this year and we haven't even gotten a GTA 6 yet but we're getting Red Dead Redemption 2, so unless you've just been jaded in gaming technically speaking the sequels to the games that you even desire have either already released or are on their way to release."

I didn't know Final Fantasy 14 existed back in 2005, I checked my comment, and it says 11. GTA San Andreas at the time was a milestone in offline gaming, which to this day a lot of gamers still like - the debates between San Andreas and Vice City are personal preference. As far as Gran Turismo 6, I can't speak on a game that hasn't released yet.

"I'm 28 and I'm pushing 29 and I've been gaming since I was 4 years old and I very much remember those days very clearly."

I'm older than you (won't reveal actual age), so there's certain gaming aspects I can say I was there day one while you were still a thought. There was excitement in certain circles that can't be replicated today.

"Irrelevant bud."

Yes your response is. Your trolling attempt failed.

tyasia03398d ago (Edited 3398d ago )

Ah good ole Edmix always trying to tell people they're wrong for not wanting to spend their money on things.

Want to go on a rant about how great DLC and micro-transactions are for us?

agent45323398d ago

I do not agree, gaming should be engaging not just fun. I am glad that this generation is releasing some new ips (Watchdogs franchise, planet coaster, off world trading company). I just wish gaming would go back to trying new ideas, new ways to play games, and to take more risks. Gaming is a multi-billion dollar business but is a creative business not a firm nor a paper pushing industry. As a creative business it needs not just new ips but new ideas and new ways of playing games.
Perfect example is Ark Survival Evolve (hopefully, the first early access survival game to go from beta to official release) a dinosaur game with the intent of surviving by any means necessary, crafting, no silly return health or just shoot anything that moves. Is about survival of the fittest, enslaving other players, taming dinosaurs, eating, sleeping, etc. Now that's a game that may fail or succeed but it will change the way gamers play and the first true open world game designed from the ground up as an open world game not a linear game inside an open world game.

The games are there if you know where to look, it's just that the hype surrounding big AAA games is insane. Part of the problem is finding them. There are tons of games from different genres to play in many ways it's the best time to play as an older gamer that has seen the industry change I get it.

There is a lot I do hate from day one patches, to paywall DLC, to publishers saturating the market with mediocre to bad games. It seems that this writer is jaded with gaming and it's ok if you don't enjoy playing games as much as you did when you where younger but there are tons of interesting and fun games to play.

Nibbs3398d ago

You mentioned college.

You're growing up.

Every couple of years as a human you change - this is part of it.

Has nothing to do with these companies, it's just you growing through life.

starchild3398d ago

Very true. We all change over time in some respects. Maybe he's one of those people who stop enjoying gaming and start doing something else with their free time. Or maybe it's just a phase he's going through. I've had periods like that, but I still love gaming and in many ways I think it's better than it has ever been.

Tetsujin3398d ago

@starchild

No, still game all the time, just when I'm not busy with college. What I like about older games over whats out now:

Good stories
Positive memories
Years later I can still access them physically, and whenever I want
Bonding with friends

I can't say the same with today's games. Granted some can be argued the same points with todays gaming, but it just doesn't feel the same today as it did in the 90s and early 2000s. With the N64 I remember being up all night playing Mario Kart 64 and Goldeneye 64, or getting gold Chocobo in Final Fantasy 7, or the first time I played Chrono Trigger and it got me hooked on RPGs.

Today? I just don't get the same feel as I did in the past. It says something when I play the older games (or indie titles) to get that same feel when today's big budget games can't provide the same experience(s). Again, this is me, not speaking for everyone.

agent45323398d ago (Edited 3398d ago )

True, but it cannot be denied that today's games heavily rely on DLC and microtransanctions. That most games are pushing forward for a more passive gaming experience; as opposed, to a more interactive experience. When was the last time a game offered mini games, free unlockables, map editors, mini quests, side quests, etc. The only games that offered some of those features are PC games and the only mainstream game that offers all of those features this generation is The Witcher 3. Today's fps games are pretty much pew pew flash flash. So no is not about age, is about gaming going for flash and pew pew over a true gaming experience.

Fist4achin3398d ago

I thought it was a great article and I am in the same boat. I've been gaming since the commodore 64/coleco days and have seen the industry change considerably. I love how big it is and the variety of what is offered, plus the overall shift in attitude of gaming going from just nerdy people hanging in the basement to full on mainstream forms of entertainment and professional gamers.

I too have gone through occasional funks with gaming where not much interests me or I just flat out didn't feel like playing much. It's cool and I do come back when as my interests ebb and flow. It does seem to be the case that many of the bigger companies just put out the same product in new packaging. I play some on occasion, but also find a lot of great games with indies and smaller lesser known companies. I'm a huge fan of Suda 51. I tend to stray away from online gaming and enjoy more stories content games. I'm probably in the minority on this one, but I like what I like. These funks are normal and sometimes life happens. I just find myself more choosey when it comes to what I support and spend money on. I think the ps2 days of gaming were significant bc of all the newer games coming out at the time.

Petebloodyonion3398d ago

for Fanboyism, I would say: Blame the Internet for that!
They always exist, they just have a bigger audience now.

I remember the trash talk in the schoolyard about how the NES was better to compare to Master system
in High School, It was blast processing.
And ...

In all my years of gaming I've never seen so many good games come out in the first month of the year as in 2017.

_-EDMIX-_3398d ago

So many good games are coming out in the next couple months it is looking extremely cramped.

Fist4achin3398d ago

I think this generation is really hitting it's stride and has settled in. I'm looking forward to it. My wallet is going to be hurting though...

starchild3398d ago (Edited 3398d ago )

Yeah, I don't have the time or money for all the great looking games soon releasing. But I'm going to enjoy as much as I can.

deafdani3398d ago

Nier Automata at the end of February, then in March the Switch, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mass Effect Andromeda and Horizon Zero Dawn.

It's ridiculous.

Paytaa3398d ago

Don't forget NiOh and Halo Wars 2 next month as well. 2017 seems like a prime time year for sure.

deafdani3398d ago

@Paytaa: dude, Nioh flew completely under my radar until you mentioned it. I just saw a trailer for it, and... GODDAMIT. WHY U DO THIS TO ME.

I'm not interested on Halo Wars 2, though, I don't own Xbox One. Glad for those who do. :)

starchild3398d ago

Nioh! How could you forget Nioh? I'm just kidding, I know we all have our own preferences. I'm just crazy excited for Nioh.

UCForce3398d ago

I'm 23 years old and I'm still love game.

Retroman3398d ago

23??? Your just a baby, beginner in gaming . Wait until you hit 50 then say " im 50 still love gaming "

starchild3398d ago

Yeah, that's still quite young. I'm in my 30s. But I'm sure when I'm in my 50s I'll look back and think how young I still was in my 30s.

yeahright23398d ago

Agreed, I'm so happy to see the "we HAVE to launch in the fall to make money" line of thought start to die.
Sprinkle them through out the year.

bye bye. this gen has seen some of the most amazing games in videogame history ofcus mostly on the Ps4. miss it at your own loss

The 10th Rider3398d ago

Critic scores say otherwise.

To be fair, I don't think that's because games are worse, I just don't think devs really know what to do with the extra power and we're not seeing a lot of innovation. Also, there's just less room for groundbreaking games because the industry is older. On top of that, game development is getting longer and more expensive, games are more complex and typically have more bugs and glitches, and publishers are less willing to take risks on developing games that aren't 'mainstream' enough because it's expensive and risky.

TLDR: Games take more to develop and less risks are taken. Games aren't worse, there's just nothing new under the sun and it's harder to impress nowadays.

WeAreLegion3398d ago

If you want innovation, check out VR games. Developers are getting very creative there.

_-EDMIX-_3398d ago (Edited 3398d ago )

You are still seeing groundbreaking games.

Imalwaysright3398d ago

"You are still seeing groundbreaking games."

Yeah, Shadow of Mordor and that's about it.

NotoriousWhiz3398d ago

This gen is trash compared to the PS3 / 360 gen and compared to the PS2 / Gamecube gen.

Imalwaysright3398d ago

It is and because there were actually innovative AAA games back then. This gen, all we're seeing is last gen games with better graphics, fish AI and chest hair.

SpinalRemains1383398d ago

About halfway through Uncharted 4, and it is absolutely a blast. The game plays and feels so fun. I have no idea what this guy is talking about.

Petebloodyonion3398d ago

That yes Uncharted4 is fun but the game is quite similar to Uncharted1, 2 and 3.

agent45323398d ago

2017 looks to be a good year. Can't wait for Ark Survival Evolve to go from Early Access to official release. I am about to play Detention (survival horror🤓). Torment tides of numera releases on my birthday :-D. 2016 I was poor but did enjoy Off world trading company. I am aware I missed out Planet Coaster :'(

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio16d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
