Sony is the only one thats keeping me into consoles. The day that PS puts their exclusives on PC will be the day console gaming dies for me.. Til then, I need that PS4 for the exclusives you cant get anywhere else.

A lot of this article sounds like personal jaded issues the reality is for a matter of fact the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One are receiving more games than the PlayStation 2 ever did in the same period in time.

Companies are able to make more money simply because there's more methods to purchase games now then there was 17 years ago, there's more avenues to make money in gaming now then there was 17 years ago.

You're seeing companies like Sega ironically releasing Yakuza 0 over here , able to at least test the market in ways that we never could have done 17 years ago like releasing Yakuza 5 as a digital-only title on the PlayStation 3, the advancement in gaming of being able to download a game offered a low-risk investment for Sega to test the market to see if their titles could still work in this is probably one of the big reasons why we are getting Yakuza 0 as well as the Remake to Yakuza 1 as well as Yakuza 6 coming next year.

We're seeing more independent developers releasing games on Console because it is a safer investment than it was a long time ago simply because they can release their titles digitally at low risk.

At the end of the day regardless about how you feel about some of the games released this generation, if you think of the previous generations fondly you still have to understand those same developers are still actually making games this generation.

Sure Ico as one of my favorite games of all time as well as Final Fantasy 10 and Metal Gear Solid 3 and a bunch of other great PlayStation 2 Classics but I not simply going to ignore Final Fantasy 15 or The Last Guardian or Metal Gear Solid 5.

The dolls designers suddenly died? That those games suddenly cease to exist? The reality is we are getting more quality titles at even a faster rate than we ever did during the PlayStation 2 generation or any of the previous generations for that matter.

If someone is going to leave a gaming generation because of personal issues in my personal opinion I'm not even entirely sure that they cared about gaming that much and they might want to deal with their emotional issues elsewhere.

Agreed. I am a relatively modern gamer and saw myself playing games like Persona 4, Deus Ex OG, SOTC, Ultima, Wing Commander and enjoying them more than most games this gen. There were 1 or 2 highlights like Witcher 3, but other than that, it's a bore. Heck I liked the PS3/Xbox 360 era- games like Vanquish, Crysis, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Left For Dead, Portal, Resistance, Ninja Gaiden etc, so many fun games. Now most are borefests.

Valid points brought up. So many games want to target so many social and competitive aspects when some just don't need it. The reason is that publishers can keep their games around l long enough and valid so they can sell dlc, skins, maps etc for as log as possible.

Sports and fps games now seem to focus on opening packs and crates than the actual games. That is why doom 2016 done so well and in so many goty lists, because it could do a lengthy and fantastic single player experience whilst putting the multiplayer as a tact on extra. The more major publishers start pushing their games in areas they don't need to for a quick buck, the more indies and smaller dev teams can flourish.

Younger gamers probably don't care about such things and mostly been accustomed to the modern social gaming scene as a norm. The author was right when he said that he works hard during the day and wants to come home and enjoy a game like Overwatch but if you aren't that good you have shitty kids scream down your headset, and that could be said for many games.

I haven't fallen out of gaming but more selective in what and who I play with, which is single player or coop experiences. I cant be arsed to deal with raging and emotional gamers online that take it too seriously.

I know people who missed out on absolutely amazing/incredible video games last generation, because they felt the PS2 era ended to soon, and didn't think the "Next Generation" of consoles would offer anything special. I've told them "You've missed out on some of the best gaming experiences the industry has ever seen"
They aren't making that same mistake again this generation! 2017 has started off extremely well "in my opinion" and the rest of the year looks really strong & promising.

While I think this generation has had its issues, disappointments, and has taken its sweet time to build up steam, looking at what's in store this year there's just no way I could pass up what's on offer.

Gravity Rush 2, Nier Automata, Nioh, Yakuza 0, Mass Effect Andromeda, Persona 5, Tekken 7, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Resi 7, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Yooka-Laylee, DJ Max Respect, Dreams, The Sinking City, Call of Cthulhu, Rime, Detroit: Become Human, Aeero... Plus a smattering of handheld games. (Though this article is specifically about console gaming)

I'm literally going to be incapable of buying and playing all the games that I want this year. I might only be able to manage half. So yeah, you're allowed to have your own opinions, that's fine. But this is shaping up to be the best year so far this gen and I'm not going to miss it!

I'm in the same boat as the author too. I just can't get myself to make the next gen jump from the 360/PS3 after I built my first PC. As Tetsujin mentioned, I'm having fun playing older games too. Once I upgrade to a GTX 1050 type of card, the older games will just have new life in them.

The one major advantage i see a pc has over computer gaming is that it doesn't have generations. I can play current gen games like witcher 3 and battlefield 1 or i can play last gen games like fallout 3 or dark souls, or i can play games from the ps2 or xbox like the final fantasy games, not to mention other advantages, such as free online and graphic upgrades. Of course consoles will always have exclusives, but not everyone buys them, i mean uncharted 4, the best selling exclusive this gen, has sold like 8 million, which while it is good, only 14% of ps4 gamers have played it, there are no longer any must have exclusives that a large number casual people would buy a console for.

I really think that a lot of the controversy in the past 3 generations are not from general fans of video games, I feel that a darker element has entered the gaming industry, Paid fanboys and reviewers. I don't think that only one company does it but, I'm sure that they all learned it from the masters of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt- Trademark: Microsoft Corporation) When Ms entered the console market it really put a firecracker under the seats of the incumbent players and we started getting some really great content and hardware, They created competition and it really accelerated the improvements and quality to the gaming landscape. Over time though, Ms started to implement what it does to every market they enter...embrace, extend and extinguish. That is why , at the beginning they were good neighbors (as far a competitors go) in the industry. But, slowly...if you really looked, there were signs that MS were trying to shorten the long game of dominating the VG market with the use of paid trolls and articles. When the XB360 looked to dominating the landscape they felt that they had control of the industry enough to finally take it over by force, That is where the XBox1 came in, It was a full on take over of the used game market with a plan to "force" every player in the industry to use their system when it came to game resales. They also tried to drastically change the console gaming landscape by taking away the rights that all gamers enjoyed when it came to relative ownership of gaming collections. essentially making the disc you bought the game on essentially worthless.
Fortunately for the health and well being of the console gaming industry, they failed. WE, the true gamers stopped them from implementing this Machiavellian, James Bond Villain plan of theirs.
Ms doesn't take kindly to divisions that fail, It is amazing that they are still in the industry, usually, they pull out of markets that they cannot totally take over. matter of fact, for a while the xbox division were nearly dismantled by MS. I think, now that with the announcement of the Scorpio and XB1 games being playable on Windows is a shift back to focusing on the Windows OS, we'll see if this ends Xbox as a console division eventually after the release of Scorpio or not.

To each his own. When we are putting hundreds of hours into RDR2. Bloodborne II, and TLoU2, you can do whatever.

For me personally the 16 BIT era was the best, megadrive, Snes, PC engine, Neo Geo,Arcade
Classics to this day and beyond. Hopefully the switch can bring done magic back.

Console market is changing,Xbox is going to release Scorpio which will be the first of how the console market will be. Meaning they will make it like it is on windows. They can just release new updated consoles but under the same OS same games ect. Its insane that you buy a console and 5 years later u cant play the games on the new system.When pc has had the same games for many years running on new os system. This is how the xbox will continue. In fact the xbox scorpio specs seem about the same jump in specs that the ps3/360/ was to ps4/xboxone. This time it will be the same OS that will just continue to improve or change to what it wants and you will always be able to continue to play your games for years to come.And it will continue to be in sync with the xbox version on windows. I hears sony is planning to to something like this with its brand too. Consoles will be merging to this way and that is a good thing. Just updated specs and new hardware added every few years ect /

Console gaming has gone away from everything that has made it popular. And that's being inexpensive, simplistic and accessible.

This reminds me of myself. I am an old school console gamer, when consoles used to be cool. When consoles offered a wide variety of gaming, full up to the brim with content inside the game (no DLC or microtransanction bullshit), lots of mini games not just side quests. When consoles were true plug and play: no silly account, install to hard drive, or install update/patches. The purpose of consoles was simplicity, affordability, and ease of use. Today's consoles are just outdated, low end gaming PCs without the greatness of its predecessors. I will stick to PC gaming which ironically like the author of this article, I am enjoying more the indie/retro side of gaming. I do enjoyed the BioShock series and obviously Metal Gear made by Kojima San

I totally feel this article and I agree with the author here.
Been gaming since the early 80 (Started on Colecovision) and owned the majority of gaming systems, portables, and add-ons. (like I say it's easier for me to mention what I didn't own compare to what I do own).
But I feel that the latest generation isn't an evolution but more of the same PS3 and Xbox 360 with max settings option.

Gears of war and Uncharted4 are fun, but they feel exactly like the 1st in the series.
Heck, The games are so similar to the past generations that remaster like Uncharted trilogy could easily pass for ps4 game.

Personally, I blame media who easily award high marks, provide big coverage, etc. for established games, style, and legendary studio.Small studio or normal 3rd parties like Sega are often shunned, never given praised and due for trying new things or creating new IPS.
A good example: Outlast and Alien Isolation who got average score by media like IGN and Gamespot, yet they are considered among the best new survival horror game genre.

Yakuza0 just got released, aside from a review there's almost no info regarding this game.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.

Wuchang is great. Nine Sols didn’t have a physical copy so I never played it but I’ve heard good things so I will check it out. I stopped playing sports games many years ago when before the card dlc’s or whatever they’re called.
