Wasted Potential: Final Fantasy X-2

There are a lot of interesting ideas and concepts in X-2 which if handled slightly differently could have resulted in an excellent game, but alas it wasn't to be.

I loved FFX-2. It has the best incarnation of the ATB

phantomexe3402d ago

Loved the turn based combat but it reminded me of a bad chick flick.

ameliabaz3402d ago

Loved the combat and didn't even mind the story of Shuyin and Lenne. But hated the goofy tone, the pointless side quests, and how Yuna basically felt like a totally different character from FFX

PhoenixUp3402d ago

Yuna was supposed to have a different personality in FFX-2 than in FFX

solideagle3401d ago

Personalities doesn't change in 2 years. It takes decades or mostly never. Singing Yuna was aaaarrrgggghhhh moment

PhoenixUp3401d ago

In the context of the story it makes perfect sense why her personality is different.

As society in Spira was very strict during the events of FFX, Yuna as a summoner was never allowed to just be laid back and have fun. With Sin finally gone, Yuna was finally free of the strict responsibility she spent her entire life preparing for and could finally let loose and have fun. Everything she grew up believing in turned out to be a lie, so it should be no wonder she acts the way she does during FFX-2. Not to mention the profound effect that her dead lover Tidus also had a hand in shaping her later characterization and dress sense.

It's called character development. Learn to notice it.

Pozzle3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

Except it doesn't make a lick of sense at all. She was an extremely traditional and religious woman who found out her entire belief and faith system was a lie. Everything she had strived towards and was raised to believe was pointless. Not to mention, her first love disappeared and she barely had any time to even say a proper goodbye. Most people don't just bounce back from that and do a complete 180 on their personality in a mere two years. That's not character growth. That's lazy writing.

In fact, the entirety of Spira was pretty laid-back for a world whose entire religion had just collapsed in on itself. These people (barring the Al Bhed) were deeply religious and spiritual. They relied on Yevon to feel safe, they relied on summoners to give them hope, they relied on sendings to properly mourn lost loved ones, and they relied on their temples to give their communities' meaning. Every inch of Spira is covered in religious iconography. Their society should have been completely shattered during the events of FFX-2. But nope, it basically looks exactly the same 2 years on, and most people just 'got over' the defeat of Sin and their entire belief system being destroyed. There's a brief mention of conflict and lack of purpose with the followers of New Yevon and the Youth League, but that ends as quickly as it begins. FFX-2 should have been a story about Yuna attempting to piece together a shattered society and to help bring the people of Spira together in a world that no longer had a God or creator. Sure, she might have been a bit more fun and cheerful with her inevitable sacrifice no longer looming over her head. But her entire personality wouldn't have changed into a carefree happy-go-lucky idiot a mere two years after the events of FFX basically changed her world forever.

PhoenixUp3401d ago

Most people don't live under the extremely strict lifestyle that being a summoner in Spira would bring either.

We've seen real life examples of child celebrities who became drastically different people when they don't have the restrictions that adulthood brings.

I love this game. Good story, great music, good characters and voice work, fun gameplay, and it was great to get to go back to Spira. Can't wait for the inevitable X-3.

feraldrgn3401d ago

Great battle system, but the Charlie's Angels theme spoiled it a bit.
There were also silly scenes that required the mute button.

I will never live down the moment my mom walked into the room while the LeBlanc massage scene was playing D:

FFX and FFX-2 Do Not Need a Sequel

As a complete duology, Final Fantasy X and X-2 just do not need a sequel. These games provided us with satisfying conclusions to the characters' journeys and meaningfully wrapped up their arcs. And after the terrible way -Will- presented its narrative, feeling more like an attempt to capitalize on the previous game's success than a well-crafted and meaningful sequel, that's all the more reason to just let FFX be what it already is. Any further attempts to force a sequel will only diminish the legacy and impact of Final Fantasy X and X-2.

If they do another one, I'd really like to see more of a focus on the connection to FF VII. Since it was confirmed that they take place in the same world. Let's just keep the pop star element out of it for the next one... I really enjoyed X-2 as a game, but man that decision for Yuna and Rikku's character direction wasn't the right choice.

shinoff21831082d ago

The connection to 7 would be dope af. I can even begin to think how'd they do it. I mean storywise and stuff I know about the Shinra stuff and everything. I'd be down with a 10 3

-Foxtrot1082d ago (Edited 1082d ago )

Nope

https://www.finaland.com/?r...

It wasn't supposed to be taken seriously

"This story is a bit of a joke. When we created FFX-2, we wanted to create something, a totally new world. Except that when I created it, I realized that it looked a lot like FFVII ... But without realizing it. Afterwards, when it was officially said in Ultimania, it took a completely gigantic proportion when it was just an anecdote"

Thank God anyway

It's better when each FF is a different Universe

Snookies121082d ago (Edited 1082d ago )

Except, it is canonically connected in the VII Remake. There's a Shinra character in X-2, who is actually shown in a picture on the wall in the Shinra HQ in Remake. Meaning at the very least, X and VII share the same world in the Remake version.

CrimsonWing691082d ago

@Snookies12

I thought they said that was just a joke:

―It’s a sequel to VII?!!
Kitase: “No, that was halfway a joke. However, in FFVII’s ending, Holy was supposed to settle things, then it’s suddenly ‘500 years later,’ and there’s been nothing like a sequel for it. There’s room to fill in that gap. There’s room for imagination. Since Nojima-san and Toriyama-san have worked together since then, talk that it could be possible with those staff members built up for a moment.”

―So, how did talk of it as a sequel to VII come up?
Nojima: “I felt that VII and X had a relatively connected feeling, that VII has an essence there.”

―Ehh, so VII and X are connected?
Nojima: “No, there isn’t much to it. For example, what happens when people die is fundamentally the same in my mind. I wrote both stories following the same idea. At times, other thoughts pop up, though. Pyreflies are green here and there, and other colors besides.”

https://thelifestream.net/c...

I think they were just having fun and making a gag out of it.

Name Last Name1082d ago

@Snookies12 those are just easter eggs

-Foxtrot1082d ago

@Snookies12

Easter eggs man nothing more

Like I said it's better for them to have their own Universe then being connected

I mean think about it...FFVII and FFX are completely different outside of those small little things, the worlds are like Night and Day

Flawlessmic1083d ago

Nope but I sure would love a remake of ffx, my fav ff game along with 9.

JokerBoy1291082d ago

Oh man, never thought I'd see someone with the same favorites as me lol. We're supposedly getting a remake of 9 at some point. I'm hoping we get something new from the FFX universe.

shinoff21831082d ago

I cannot wait for the remake of 9. It's got me pumped and it's not even official. Ff9 is damn near perfect imo

Abnor_Mal1082d ago (Edited 1082d ago )

I just saw a video about a rumor that Sony may have secured the rights for FF9 exclusivity for some possible remake.

Skip ahead to the 2:30 mark

Okay didn’t see others already said it

gold_drake1083d ago

but .. i dunno. ive always wanted a prequel with the three guys.

not sure what else there is to tell about Spira.

shinoff21831082d ago

Sorry for the spoiler if true

Is it true if you complete x2 100 percent tides comes back in some way. I never 100 percented it.

Name Last Name1082d ago

Yes, the Fayth ask Yuna if she wants to see him and they dream him up again.

shinoff21831082d ago

Thanks. That pretty much what I read.

20 Years Ago, Final Fantasy Broke Its Biggest Rule — and It Paid Off Wildly

The franchise had been built around each game being an entirely original and unique experience. But that all changed in 2003.

BrainSyphoned1158d ago

I remember X2 as the game that birthed the idea in Square that FF13 parts 1-3 and the disastrous FF 13 Versus....I mean FF15 were great ideas. Hooray for continuations paying off wildly to the point of almost not existing.

Harkins17211158d ago

And it still sold 10 million copies. Wasn't that disastrous.

kingnick1158d ago

The attempt to make side stories to mainline FF games was another lazy idea by SE to maximise profits while expending fewer resources.

FFX-2 was a good game and I liked the combat system it didn't have the replayability of prior mainline titles. The comedic nature of the characters and story meant I didn't feel as invested in the game world.

ManMarmalade1157d ago (Edited 1157d ago )

The problem with 13 was actually that it was ported to the 360. Tons of ideas and content had to be scrapped to make room for the game on the 360 which required 3 discs, while the PS3 required only one disc. The battle system had things missing that were in the original trailers too. I tried to like the game when it came out, but I was disappointed and stopped playing around halfway through.

-Foxtrot1158d ago

The dress sphere mechanic was fantastic I thought

FallenAngel19841158d ago

FFX-2 was my first game in the series

FallenAngel19841158d ago

I love that game. Beating it multiple times is a blast

sadraiden1158d ago

Is N4G trying to astro-turf themselves against all of the current SE hate? Seems like there's a lot of "SE GOOD" posts today in the wake of the Symbiogenesis noise.

Godmars2901158d ago

I remember it as middling at best. The first FF I didn't finish.

Final Fantasy X series shipments and digital sales top 20.8 million

Total worldwide shipments and digital sales for the Final Fantasy X series, which includes Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2, have surpassed 20.8 million units as of September 2021.

In October 2013, Square Enix announced that the series had sold over 14 million copies. Since this was before the initial release of Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster, it can be assumed that the remastered collection makes up the additional 6.8 million units.

phoenixwing1399d ago

It's so cheap on steam I'm not surprised

Melankolis1398d ago

Heh, it's even 30% cheaper than FF VIII Remastered

Flawlessmic1398d ago

Remake pleaseeeeee!

Keep the game exactly the same just give me next gen graphics!!
