Does the Switch Mean the End for Nintendo?

Power Up Gaming: "Nintendo officially unveiled their new console, the Switch, this week. Many people throughout the world enjoyed their conference and have shown unrestrained enthusiasm for the new device. But not us. The good moments were few and far between during the reveal conference, and in this week's episode of The Gentleman's Pantry, we speculate whether or not the Switch could be the final nail in Nintendo's coffin."

I just have to say first...

What kind of fool rates his shower? It's like rating a $#lt you just had and giving a rating on that."I give this $#lt a 7/10." Ridiculous.Podcast starts off horrible. I stopped listening.Anyway...

I highly doubt there are going to be just 2 games for launch. There are going to be more games and more announcements before it's release in 2 months and more throughout the year.

The system is fine for what Nintendo is doing with it and it's built in features. It doesn't need to be 4K with alien processors and last 20 hours on a charge. It doesn't need to play the exact games as the other 2 systems. My guess is battery packs with longer life will be made for it. Gamers seem fine playing lower resolution games on Xbox. And gamers seem fine playing games like battlefield on PS4 at 900p.

I don't ever agree with paying for online. Or old Nintendo games as monthly rentals. But I've never seen so much negativity. Gamers say they want competition, that they want each console to stand out from the other, but then turn around and beg for Nintendo to fail so that there are less systems on the market. And then beg for Nintendo to make games for the other 2 systems. Doesn't make sense.

I'm more of a fan of what Sony is doing right this gen, but this negative behavior before Switch even launches is maddening. Gamers are becoming too jaded. If it fails, then it fails. But wanting the exact same power with the exact same games and the exact same features is saying you really just want one system on the market. Because they'll all be the same.

Nintendo's excuse is that they like to try something different and new. Gamers excuse is that they want the exact same thing or they won't buy it. But complain that there isn't something new and different to try. Ridiculous.

Amorist893419d ago

Thank you, about damn time someone spoke up against the hypocrisy we've been witnessing lately.

Wallstreet373419d ago (Edited 3419d ago )

Who are you to judge what ppl really feel and say what they should feel? You seriously don't know why ppl are upset? Switch isn't this new way to play, PSP go already did games on the go and dock for TV so let's give credit where its due.

Ppl.are mad because the home console aspect of it is weaker than four year old consoles like the Xbox one. Nintendo is using the hybrid excuse but Wiiu was the same. Bcus of this third party games will suffer. The console is over priced and they screwed Wiiu owners by delaying Zelda until Switch release bcus they hardly have any games for launch.

Another thing ppl are mad about, the launch titles are horrendous and their offering ports for old &ss games like Skyrim and Street Fighter 2? Are you serious? Lol

Nintendo has no right charging for online bcus their online infrastructure sucks! The nes/snes games for just a month is a joke and disrespectful to consumers. The paid app on phone for voice chat is lol archaic and typical dumb Nintendo.

My man if you want to enable this bs that's fine but don't go ranting about hypocrisy or what ppl think.

This whole presentation was a farce, the system is launching with nothing at 326 after tax (I know I have one preordered), the hardware is weak, we saw more of the same Mario with outdated graphics, they deserve to be called out. Go tell that to the diehard Nintendo fans on YouTube who have made videos calling them out too. This isn't fanboy hypocrisy its the reality of things. We saw this same defense of Wiiu and what happened? Fanatics were repaid how? Abandoning system, few games and holding off Zelda till switch reveal. Thanks Nintendo your awesome /s

brewin3419d ago (Edited 3419d ago )

Hit nail on head. I buy Nintendo stuff to get my kids into gaming and we love nintendo in my household. But as the parent buying all this Nintendo stuff, I find this whole thing insulting to consumers. I bought the wii u for the new Zelda but i had to wait for it this long so they could co-develop it for the new system as well? And now they want to sell us "deluxe" versions of the same wii u titles nearly every wii u owner has already bought... for the same $60 price no less?! Im just in awe at the utter lack of respect for their core consumer.

madcowz643419d ago

We live in a world where your average gamer still cares about graphics, mine can do 1080p and yours can't or mine can almost do native 4k and yours upscales and PC gamers are like well I've been able to native 4K you plebs.

Nintendo looks passed that and they sort of always have especially in the past few years, games are going to take the Switch far. As long as it gets the exclusives it was promised and the 3rd party publishers are still on board it will succeed. In short it needs games, a lot more than the Wii U.

People love to find something to complain or argue about it's just in our nature. People also like to be right, being pessimistic about something and having it fail yields no disappointment. I see so many gamers make excuses for "X" game looking better on the platform they don't have. If you love gaming you should want every platform to succeed even if you don't own it because that doesn't mean it sucks because YOU didn't or won't buy it. Wake up people, the more money this industry makes the more games we get and isn't that what we want?

Actually, given that it's coming out in Q1 2017? Ya, it does need to be 4K.

Also, it does need to play the same games as the other consoles. Its called flexibility in your library.

Touting that better batteries will be made for it shows how out of touch you are with the general complaints. Customers having to pay for better batteries because Nintendo was too cheap to include them for an outrageous price to begin with? Ya, that doesn't exactly sway people's opinion in your favour.

Gamers "seem" fine playing lower res games on Xbox. That's been the case for the last 4 years. Xbox One isn't being release in 2 months from now. Secondly, I think everyone here knows the struggles the Xbox has had, for many reasons, including it suffering from lower resolution and frame skipping problems.

Nintendo's arrogance blinds it to what the current market demands. It's not the first time, and it won't be the last. Nintendo has far deeper pockets than to let a few botched consoles take them down. We'll see them release another system with their head firmly up their own butt again I'm sure.

Gamestop has a list they gave me with my switch pre order. I think its like 5 games at launch. They are charging full price for Arms... i thought that was insane

zombiewombie3419d ago

The street fighter 2 port is 40 dollars.... The game was 15 bucks on ps3 and 360.....

81BX3419d ago

Ouch! New understood these online prices

Omnislashver363419d ago (Edited 3419d ago )

I haven't seen anyone complain about the idea of Nintendo making a home console, infact, overwhelmingly the gaming community supports that idea. We're done with the gimmicks. Being different doesn't always mean being better. If I go to my phone provider and ask for an Android phone, and they try to sell me a banana instead, yeah, it's different. But it's not what I wanted. I have no use for a giant tablet I can't bring with me everywhere. The thing would require a huge case. Battery life is shit. Can't put it in my pocket. It's a gimmick. No word on if the battery is replaceable, or even if it is, if it's possible to use a higher capacity battery. All in all, I highly doubt it.

I definitely wouldn't complain if it were a stationary console. Yeah, Nintendo could be weaker than Xbox, but to be 1/2 as powerful as the weaker console of 2013 is bullshit. They could have released a $250 stationary console with 2-4x the power. Cheaper, and much, much more powerful.

Is there anything wrong with that idea? And Nintendo could still be "different" because they'd have the weaker console and the cheaper console of the 3. Still "different". But it would be cheaper and more powerful than the hybrid crap we have now. I wouldn't even mind if they kept the motion controls on a stationary console, as long as they were optional.

They honestly think people are going to play two player on half a controller out in broad daylight where you're not going to be able to see it's puny six inch screen(puny for standing far away with motion controls). They honestly think kids are going to set this thing up outside when playing basketball and whatever else. It's ridiculous. It's features are gimmicks. Period.

Again, I haven't seen anyone complain about the idea of a stationary console. You're just making up fanfictions in your head now.

No one is begging for them to fail. Its just that the switch isn't particularly convincing as competition tbh.

-Foxtrot3419d ago

Die hard fans are basically like

"If you are criticising them despite them being in the wrong then it's obvious you are a Nintendo hater and want them to fail"

CrimsonPheonix3419d ago

"No one is begging for them to fail"

Wrong right out of the gate.

Omnislashver363419d ago (Edited 3419d ago )

As a Nintendo fan, I'm begging them to fail. They need to go third party. It's best for the future of gaming. Sad thing is, even if Switch fails, they have enough money for another console.

RosweeSon3419d ago (Edited 3419d ago )

Nintendo pulling out the hardware market is not the best for gaming who's going to actually invent anything. Rather than just borrow what Nintendo lay down and get all the flack for then becomes common place.
Soccer moms and casuals didnt but it for motion controls they bought it for Wii fit and Just dance 😩✌🏻

sinjonezp3419d ago

Rosweeson
I disagree. Innovation is there, psvr, oculus rift, etc. Microsoft visor where it utilize your space to create visuals. The bottom line is people wanted a Nintendo system with power. If they had the power, the first party games would be tremendous. Look at the Nintendo 64 with Banjo, Perfect Dark, Mario 64, waverace, Zelda, Fzero, Star Fox, Rogur Squadron, Killer Instinct Gold, the list goes on and on. If we had those level of ip's with 4K graphics etc gamers would be super excited. I would. Imagine a star fox with the level of graphics as star Citizen? Or a Zelda that would put the Witcher to shame? Be realistic. No one wants a dated looking device that cost more than systems that are better and cheaper.

Omnislashver363419d ago (Edited 3419d ago )

@sinjonzp
Exactly. I could deal with Mario having pixar level graphics. Donkey Kong having more level of detail, Zelda with near-Witcher level graphics, SSMB on par with Tekken(but looking even more awesome because it's art style would be perfect). I could see all of this in a regular console with a cheaper price. I see a half-assed console with Switch.

Veneno3419d ago

Only the casuals and soccer moms can save Nintendo now.

Stevonidas3419d ago

"Casuals and soccer moms" have money to spend. Nintendo would be stupid to ignore that demographic.

DarkZane3419d ago

Casuals and soccer moms bought the Wii because of its motion controls. The same can't be said for the Wii U or the Switch tablet though. Those casuals and soccer moms buy actual tablets like ipad and android now.

sinjonezp3419d ago

This system is confusing. The objective according to Nintendo is to put everything in one box. Motion controls gaming on the go with home console abilities. They are betting on establishing a market for ALL demographics. In the end it's just confusing and the games don't blow anyone away. If the games blew us away it would be a different story.

rezzah3419d ago

I think it might be the end of console gaming for them or extremely close to it.

They will live on through their handheld gaming products.

Shadowsteal3419d ago

The Switch is a Handheld, remember?

Nyxus3419d ago

No, it's a home console that you can take with you.

ninsigma3419d ago

Well Nintendo aren't marketing it that way.

CrimsonPheonix3419d ago

All the tech resides in the tablet portion that makes it a handheld, and a pretty damn good one at that.

rezzah3418d ago

It is but it isn't solely a handheld gaming device.

The DS products are handheld only, and I assume it is easier and cheaper to develop games for it. Also the DS itself is a cheaper entry into gaming than the Switch and is more portable due to it's smaller size.

Zelda looks awesome but in general The switch is underwhelming as a console of 2017. Ninty gonna pull a Sega if they aint careful

Stevonidas3419d ago

Nintendo has the kind of brand loyalty Sega could never muster. They managed to sell over 60 MILLION dedicated handhelds in an age where everyone has a mobile device capable of playing games. The Switch will be fine.

superchiller3419d ago

I bet you said that the Wii U "will be fine" too, back when it was bombing hard. Didn't turn out that way, did it?

RosweeSon3419d ago

They never managed to sell 100 million home consoles and games sales are no where near either besides the fact Sega were just flop after flop Sonic wouldn't work in 3D, Mega Cd flop 32X flop. Sega Saturn whilst introducing me to Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 1 bit of a flop, dreamcast as much as I enjoyed it (Loved it) in the Grand scheme of things major fatal flop. Nintendos flops you can count on one hand. Virtual Boy and Wii U if 13 million is a flop? I enjoyed it. Sure it's not ps1/2 100 million+ but has anyone else ever done that other than Nintendo. Factor in Nintendo have money coming in daily without even doing anything... Mario 💰
Zelda 💰 Oh and that little franchise of pocket monsters with what a few hundred... more nearer to a 1000 (800+) 'mon they could make lunchboxes for pencil cases plushes, allsorts... 💰💰💰 28176;... Sega didn't have that there's only so long you can live on Mega Drive success. They had some great games but majority didn't go past 2d and they just had to create some more Virtua taxi, tennis etc problem was as great as the games were all built from the ground up for...dream, Oh I mean Arcade yeah where you pay £1 and games are finished in an hour, light gun games etc. Virtua tennis was a banger and crazy taxi is great but as long as a Zelda? A Mario even ;)
Nintendo ain't going nowhere just people love a bit of Drama...
Doomed.
I mean sure Nintendo will listen to some extent but some of these people are just ridiculous, I want Mario 4K as much power as Scorpio... good luck was never gonna happen Nintendo have never been a company pushing technical grunt but innovation of hardware... look at the handheld market they held that back on 8 bit for Years... then went 16 bit destroyed game gear and even psp with all that power, did exactly the same with 3ds against Vita is a beast but Sony dropped it like 💩
Meanwhile Nintendo with inferior hardware (no doubting that) have smashed it.
Sure Wii u was a success 3ds had the same situation dire after launch price cut and then boom. Hopefully switch can turn it round over next couple of months or during rest of the year plenty more games will turn up. They'll get it out then Nintendo direct this is what's up for the rest of the year... E3 is only 3 months after launch after all. Exciting times.

_-EDMIX-_3418d ago

But didn't they manage to sell 160 million the previous generation? What about the Wii U? I'm sorry but that brand loyalty only goes so far.

What doesn't make any sense is you make a comment about mobile devices capable of playing games and then you say switch will be fine? Ummmm ok.

I believe Nintendo we'll be fine.

As a software company

The reality is you create the hardware to build and install base of services and to sell software if they're unable to build a stable install base with the switch they're going to have to consider going multi-platform because it doesn't make sense to waste billions to sell less Hardware, which results in selling less software.

it's literally the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

So basically your solution is they should keep wasting billions on Hardware to sell less games?

As opposed to spending $0 on Hardware in entering the largest installed base they've ever come across with the ability to spend all their money on selling more games to more people?

Ummmmm ok bud lol

I'm sorry but it just doesn't make Financial or even mathematical sense.

Nintendo is much closer to go in the Sega route that I think a lot of you actually notice. They're already making games for other install bases in which they don't own the platform with IOS and Android....

They've already started creating games for platforms big don't own, so I don't see Nintendo "going" third party because they already ARE third party in their respective making games for other platforms, I simply see them going more this route if their Hardware is not selling

_-EDMIX-_3418d ago

At this point it's probably going to happen.

I don't believe they want to continue to be wasting billions on failed Hardware.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.
